Billed as 'Southport's premier seafood and steak restaurant', it would be easy to miss Forge…read moreBrasserie as it is rather hidden down a tiny side street off Eastbank Street. However, those brave enough to go down the pokey back road its on will find themselves rewarded with a lovely dining experience, complimented by helpful and friendly waiting staff as well as delicious cooking using locally grown ingredients. As I said, Forge advertise themselves primarily as a fish restaurant, so it's no surprise to find their menu dominated by fish and other seafood dishes. I'm not a big fan of seafood generally but I love fish and have found some of the dishes at Forge are both interesting and tasty, such as the halibut steak and the grilled Dover sole, which although expensive is worth the price. Aside from seafood and fish dishes, their meat menu is similarly impressive as it boasts a good variety of options including roast duck as well as a good range of different steaks. The restaurant may not be in the best location in Southport but it's worth putting that to one side and giving Forge a go, particularly if you're a seafood and fish fan.

You'll get lovely traditional Brit food in here as well as a fantastic variety of very fresh seafood. In fact the catches of the day are available to view in an open fridge, and that ambience of openness continues right through to the open kitchen where you can see the dishes being created. The prices are really reasonable, especially if you take advantage of some of the special offers, and the service is lovely. But even though it's something of a concealed weapon be sure to book in advance. The place is nicely bustling even during the day and it's more than popular, so be careful!

The large party options offered a menu with three choices of starter and main or two different banquets with steaks, wings, Mac and cheese etc. We opted for the large party menu and as requested by the restaurant placed our orders in advance midweek. Normally pre-booking gives me a bit of a headache. I'm indecisive at the best of times when I'm out to eat so having to choose days in advance makes me worry that the notion would have worn off by then. I'd ordered corned beef hash croquettes for my starter and the rump steak with peppercorn sauce and beef dripping cooked chips. And luckily by the time Saturday night came I was really looking forward to having a delicious medium-rare steak! The restaurant is upstairs and is quite small, but they had changed the layout slightly to ensure that our group didn't feel cramped in which was a nice touch. We had a drinks order taken (a very deep, fruity Zinfandel for myself) and then our starters were brought to us quickly after. Three huge, golden brown potato croquettes with a side of crunchy red cabbage slaw were placed in front of me. Was this the starter?! The breadcrumb coating was crisp and coated a fluffy, tangy centre. There was a good balance of flavours, with some spring onion lifting the milder potato and corned beef flavours. In my head I was going to eat two and save room for my steak but they were delicious and I ate all three. Our plates were cleared and the mains were brought out. I immediately regretted polishing off my starter as another huge plate of food faced me. My steak was a perfect medium rare but the peppercorn sauce was full of whole peppercorns and was a little bit too hot for my liking. The onion ring was encased in a light crisp batter but the onion was slightly undercooked. The chips on the other hand were unanimously decided upon as the highlight of everyone's meal. Well seasoned, fluffy, a good bite to the outside and perfectly golden. Just delicious. We were very well taken care of here and they gave us 20% off our first round of drinks in Bar Bodega downstairs too. A really lovely place, with wonderful food and attentive staff. If you're looking for some proper steakhouse style food then Rookwood should be on your go to list.

As we sat down, we made our choices, and was expecting to be served, so we could order drinks/starters. But even though there were less than 3 tables in service, I had to go and find a server so I could order our drinks and meals. This could be forgiven if it were busy, but it was not, and there were plenty of staff just gazing into the void. When I managed to collar someone to make the order, we had to wait an extended length of time, for the over priced, poorly cooked food. When the mains arrived, probably 40 mins after ordering, both the burger, and the steak were EXTREMELY salty, and zero flavour depth. It was so salty, my mouth is still dry and burning as I write this review. You would normally expect, to be asked how the food is, during your meal. And genuinely wanting feedback, to add to value added work, to keep the business continually improving. But in the Firepit, it seems, nobody cares how your food is. We spent the whole meal, batting away flies, and choking on enough salt, to put us in perpetual hypertensive crisis. I mentioned to 2 staff members, how terrible the experience was, but nothing was mentioned to management, and to be quite honest, they didn't seem like they cared. In the restaurant business, you have to be monitoring customer experience closely, as you're only as good as your last weeks customers, so if this isn't actioned upon, I can see this space up for rent, very soon. At the Fire Pit, you pay city premiums, for terrible service/food/experience. This really is a pretentious venue, with zero quality control, or customer service. Experience is everything, and I can say wholeheartedly, they have missed the mark.
