It took everything in…read moreme--physically (because I was kinda dying) and mentally (because I never ask for help)--to call "them people." But I did. The episode started the moment I stepped out of the shower. My hands stopped functioning, and I couldn't grab a towel. So yes... this whole ordeal happened in the buff. I open my eyes to hear: "Ericka! We're here to help--you're gonna be okay!" Two responders and equipment at the foot of my bed. I cried--it took everything in me to stay conscious. Then I hear another voice shouting in my ear, "Ericka! Wake up! Tell us what happened!" I go in and out of consciousness, spelling things in ASL (they didn't know ASL, but points for trying). Still naked, by the way. When I finally focus, there are seven people in my room--one incredible woman and six... let's say calendar-worthy gentlemen. Even half-blind and half-dead, I could tell I was surrounded by very fine heroes. Naturally, I was mortified. Six handsome firefighters in my bedroom and my room looked like a laundry landslide. Lesson learned: in case of emergency, always keep both clean underwear and a clean room. No makeup. No heels. No movie soundtrack. Just a team of professionals saving a delirious, sweaty, forty-something woman in waist beads. Not the fantasy I had in mind, Lord! Despite the chaos, they were calm, respectful, and compassionate. One medic, Sung, looked like a K-drama prince. Another, tatted and built like a Savannah Bananas player. Even in pain, I couldn't help but joke, "Why are you all so hot? Did you not bring any regular ones?" They handled me with care, wrapped me in a robe, and got me safely to the hospital. Two weeks later, I visited--fully clothed this time--to thank them with a gourmet autumn charcuterie spread from the farm and bakery. As handsome, friendly, and professional as they are, I hope to never see them again (under those circumstances). They saw my mess, my panic, my humanity--and still showed up with skill, empathy, and grace. Who needs Marvel or DC when you have real heroes like these? My deepest thanks--and a respectful curtsey--to the crew that saved me.

The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is a group of "neighbors helping neighbors" since…read more1944. Yeah, tired old cliche, but it was true then, and it's true now. It never ceases to amaze me how many people who live in Loudoun County have no idea that their tax money doesn't actually pay for career staff 24/7, let alone the equipment and apparatuses needed to save lives. So that's where we step in. We're your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, and we're here to serve the community (and drive really fast while doing it)! Chances are, if you call 9-1-1 between 1800 and 0600 hours, the folks who will show up at your door to put our your fire, check for a gas leak, or care for you on your way to the hospital are only getting paid in personal pride for giving back to the community. Most people know that the fire station is where our shiny yellow engines and ladder trucks are quartered. Many people also know that we're a joint department - so we have ambulances as medics as well. But that's not all! Our primary Station 6 (we have two: Stations 6 and 23) serves as a bastion for the community, hosting open houses, monthly pancake breakfasts, Mother's Day breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and our Founders Hall is often rented out for private events. Our volunteer staff go through literally hundreds of hours of book and practical training before being released as firefighters and/or emergency medical technicians. We're constantly brushing up on our skills, and during our duty crew nights you can often find us around town doing practice drills. Our people come from all walks of life - most of us have full-time day jobs ranging from consultants to construction workers to students, and everything in between. It's often like being part of a great big family. A sometimes dysfunctional one, but a family nonetheless. We mess around with each other, we argue, and we tease, but when the fecal matter hits the rotating air circulation device, we cover each other's backs and get it done, because when it comes down to it, each and every one of us is passionate about protecting our homes and our neighbors. Come on down and say hi. Ask to do a ride-along. And for the love of all that is good and right with the world, pull over when you see me tearing down the road in an ambulance with my lights and sirens on!

Once a month they do a pancake breakfast, usually the 1st Sunday of the month. They have all the fixings. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, biscuits, sausage gravy, yogurt, coffee, and juices. It's very cheap and it all goes to help the station. There is also a kiddie section for kids to do crafts. Come during December and Santa will be there for pictures. So check out their calendar every month on their website and see when the next one is. It's one less weekend meal you have to worry about. Get there early as it can get packed at times.

It's very easy to get cynical about city government in Baltimore but my limited experiences (never had an actual fire thank god) with these guys has been great. The first time I needed them someone at our house was having a medical emergency. They responded quickly and seemed like serious professionals when they got here. More recently we had a false fire alarm at our house and because we were not home the alarm company dispatched the fire department to see what was going on. Unfortunately they had to bust into our house but they were careful to do it in a way that caused minimal damage and did not leave the house vulnerable to being broken into until we got home. When I spoke with one of the responding fire fighters on the phone to explain the false alarm situation he was super-nice about it and not at all unpleasant about the fact that they'd wasted their time over a twitchy smoke detector.

My smoke alarms were making a nuisance beep. At first, I replaced the batteries, but the beeping…read moredidn't stop. Since they were almost 20 years old, I bought two new smoke alarms and replaced them. However, the beeping continued so I called the Reston Fire Station and explained what I had done. Thirty minutes later, they showed up and looked at the two smoke alarms and told me they were fine. They asked me if I also had a carbon monoxide alarm. I told them yes but since it was plugged to an outlet and never thought it would need a battery. Come to find out that they do. They replaced the battery and the beeping stopped. I was very grateful.

Ironically, this same dept is at my neighbors house EVERY OTHER WEEKEND so it seems for issues far less than this and what appears to be a repeated false alarm.
