There was no way for us to open the pipe and pull Roscoe's toe out. I remembered tales of firefighters rescuing kitties in trees, so I called 911. I told the dispatcher it was a dog, not a "true" emergency (Of course to me, my husband, and Roscoe it was). I didn't know who else to call. Five minutes later the dispatcher called me . KVFD was on its way. My heroes. Even now, 5 years later, I still feel that thick thud of helplessness deep in the well of my stomach. But OMG KVFD were at the Starbucks right across University! They drove to our street and stopped in front at our house. I don't remember if they had lights and sirens on -- I imagine they did.. Of course they did. My heroes.. I was surrounded by four handsome men in the basement (my husband included) as they assessed the situation and determined the best way to approach it.. One went out and got tools.. I paced back and forth like a lunatic. In fewer than five minutes, my heart dog and his toe were freed from the drain. My heroes. There were no emergencies at the time the dispatcher contacted them, and these men were able to come right away. They didn't have to. But they did. I wanted to hug each of them. I imagine I did. My heroes. We can add an additional tale to the one about kitties in trees. Dogs from sinks. My heroes. They waved good bye to us as the drove away ....in the huge ladder truck. My heroes. I will forever be indebted to these men. My heroes.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people who live in Loudoun County have no idea that their tax money doesn't actually pay for career staff 24/7, let alone the equipment and apparatuses needed to save lives. So that's where we step in. We're your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, and we're here to serve the community (and drive really fast while doing it)! Chances are, if you call 9-1-1 between 1800 and 0600 hours, the folks who will show up at your door to put our your fire, check for a gas leak, or care for you on your way to the hospital are only getting paid in personal pride for giving back to the community. Most people know that the fire station is where our shiny yellow engines and ladder trucks are quartered. Many people also know that we're a joint department - so we have ambulances as medics as well. But that's not all! Our primary Station 6 (we have two: Stations 6 and 23) serves as a bastion for the community, hosting open houses, monthly pancake breakfasts, Mother's Day breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and our Founders Hall is often rented out for private events. Our volunteer staff go through literally hundreds of hours of book and practical training before being released as firefighters and/or emergency medical technicians. We're constantly brushing up on our skills, and during our duty crew nights you can often find us around town doing practice drills. Our people come from all walks of life - most of us have full-time day jobs ranging from consultants to construction workers to students, and everything in between. It's often like being part of a great big family. A sometimes dysfunctional one, but a family nonetheless. We mess around with each other, we argue, and we tease, but when the fecal matter hits the rotating air circulation device, we cover each other's backs and get it done, because when it comes down to it, each and every one of us is passionate about protecting our homes and our neighbors. Come on down and say hi. Ask to do a ride-along. And for the love of all that is good and right with the world, pull over when you see me tearing down the road in an ambulance with my lights and sirens on!

Once a month they do a pancake breakfast, usually the 1st Sunday of the month. They have all the fixings. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, biscuits, sausage gravy, yogurt, coffee, and juices. It's very cheap and it all goes to help the station. There is also a kiddie section for kids to do crafts. Come during December and Santa will be there for pictures. So check out their calendar every month on their website and see when the next one is. It's one less weekend meal you have to worry about. Get there early as it can get packed at times.

Hey, we're an Epiphany household, so we'll rock with our tree until Jan. 6th..or 7th...or the closet weekend after Jan. 6th. I'm somewhat new to the area, so I'm not too familiar with Christmas tree prices here. Having lived in NYC for 20ish years, I thought $85 for a 5-6 foot tree was a decent deal especially so close to Christmas. The prices ranged from $85 to $115. So, their most expensive tree was considerable cheaper than a smaller tree that we purchased last year in Rockville. The two ladies that loaded the Christmas tree did a wonderful job and were full of the holiday spirit. While there was not a huge selection of trees (probably because I wanted until the last minute to buy one), there were plenty (IMO) of fresh trees available. If we stay in the Wheaton/Kemp Mill area, I have a feeling that this will be our go-to Christmas tree spot.

On a Saturday morning I was having a medical emergency and we realized I needed to go to the ER as soon as possible so we called 911. The dispatcher was so kind, reassuring and helpful. After giving our information Rich asked if he wanted to talk to me and he did. He kept reassuring me the squad was on the way and gave me some instructions for Rich to confine any pets and unlock the door. We are a very short distance from the squad and the crew was there within minutes. They immediately started tests and assessments. They determined they needed to transport me to the hospital rather than my going by private automobile. The crew could not have been nicer. The whole time I was with them I felt safe and like I was in the best hands possible.

My review is specifically for the firefighters and EMTs at station #206 on Seminary road who were a godsend to me on Thursday when I needed their help. I couldn't be more impressed or thankful for their care and attention. Unable to move and in severe pain, they bundled me up, with extreme care got me to the ambulance and once they'd done their preliminary work whisked me off to the hospital. At all times I knew I was in good hands and they were exceptional at communicating with me each step of the way so I knew what was going to happen. One of the EMTs was even nice enough to ask my friend if she'd remembered to let my cat out of the bedroom where he'd been locked up while they worked. No one ever intends to need help from our Fire and EMS folks. But I'm really thankful for the crew at station #206 who were there when I really needed them.

My girlfriend and I recently moved to a new apartment and the wooden slat that the previous tenant used to lock the sliding glass door that led to a third story balcony fell behind us, stranding us on our balcony. After trying to call neighbors and locksmiths with no affordable options (lock smith for a condominium with a communal locked front door + personal locked door being $295-$400, and neighbors not answering) I called the non-emergency number for Arlington county's police/fire. The responder told me that "you only call this number as your last resort" and that he was sending the fire department, who I assumed would break the lob door and apartment door by force. I tried to talk him out of it to no avail. Thankfully, they Instead took us down from the balcony with the firetruck's bucket and allowed us to try a few neighbors' codes to buzz us in and eventually got past the first door. Our apartment door was opened gracefully with minimal damage. Every one of them was understanding and courteous. "This is what we do". Thank you so much for helping us out in this potentially costly and/or dangerous ( I was considering trying to climb down from the third story balcony that offers no footing) minor emergency. I could not be more impressed with the professionalism and care these brave men provided us. If Alexandria's fire department sees this I plead you will forward it to the firefighters of Arlington county. Best wishes, IG
