Snow is New York is not that big of a deal. However, this snowstorm was the most demonic thing to happen to the city in years. It was enough to be difficult to shovel, there was no place to put it and the temperature dropped to below freezing and stayed there, leaving mounds of snow and ice everywhere.
Initially, I thought all was well because I shoveled my little driveway and yard within the allotted time and went about my business. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, something is terribly wrong with my gutters and my driveway soon became an Ink Rink.
I planned to simply wait it out but my car was sitting in water back there and that water became ice at night. So I was stuck in an inch of ice that simply was not melting while a steady drip from some unknown place added even more ice to the side of one tire. To add insult to injury, three days after the storm, a massive chunk of ice fell from the roof directly onto the hood off the car. So blisteringly cold, a solid sheet of ice and a dented car turned me into a very morose, angry person. I took my anger outside and spent two hours chipping away at the ground, eventually realizing I was getting nowhere. It soon became clear to me that I had a decision to make: I could either stay inside until March or get some professional help.
After some delayed back and forth in communication, Statewide Executive Services said they could come but alas, the only time they could make it meant that I would be at work. To my horror, as I was leaving the house on that day, there was a loud crack and a massive avalanche of snow and ice fell from the roof onto the very driveway I wanted cleared of just a two inch layer of ice.
I spoke to the company over the phone while at work and was told they would still be able to come by but by then, it was already after 9 PM. I wasn't sure if they were there to assess the situation or actually work at that late hour but apparently they got right to work on the problem. My tenant, who was home at the time, referred to it as "a high tech operation". By the time I crawled home, all the ice was cleared away from the whole area and even chipped away from the car without damaging the car itself. I think the area was even treated because it's now days later and it still has not refrozen.
I do wish the communication was a bit better as we went back and forth trying to coordinate but did not discuss timeline and prices beforehand. That's almost irrelevant as the work was immaculate, obviously done with care and thorough. This is something I have never done before and is clearly a niche industry in New York so don't let the lack of reviews deter you from using this excellent service. read more
