I had to make a last min reservation for a large van to pick up a numerous set of international luggage coming from the middle east. Wayne from the State Van Rental office in LAX was very accommodating and provided with flexibility on when I could pick up the van, as the custom's release time/date was uncertain. Additionally, he was also very flexible in accepting my ID and verifcation documents, as I had just arrived from abroad, and had limited US (California) address and ID documents to provide. This business is a complete racket. They lie on Expedia and tell you a way less price and when you show up they charge you outrageous for insurance and tell you that you can't use the insurance through Expedia. They also, don't present the unlimited mileage deal on Expedia. They tell you when you show up that if you go out of the tri-state area you get charge for mileage. .39cents a mile and then a huge tax surge charge on that! DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! You've been warned. Also these vans are bare bones. It also smelled really bad in the van and had to deal with that for a week. The driver seat was broken, the lumbar bar. The seat was very uncomfortable after driving for a while. When I called they said ok we have it noted. We had a terrible experience with Alex. We understand that we should have read the small print. But we don't work in this industry and didn't realize that by returning the van less than 2 hours over a 24 hour period we would be charged a whole additional day of $280 dollars. normally when I rent a vehicle, I'm told by the staff verbally when to have it back by. Just like at a hotel, they tell you when check out is. The kicker here that made me feel so ripped off, is this company takes you to the airport for your flight when you bring the van back. So instead of Alex letting me know I had a 1pm cutoff, he instead told me to email him my flight plans and when I plan to bring the vehicle back. So I do that and tell him I will be there by 130 because our flight leaves at 4 and he proceeds to email me back saying that sounds great and to enjoy my vacation. Wouldn't you think common courtesy would be to let me know I would be 30 min past and I would be charged $280 for that half an hour?! He knew it and instead told me to enjoy my vacation. Lack of human decency at its finest. And to think I thought he was a good guy on day one. He even was sweet to NY mom who beat cancer and was taking her kids on this trip to celebrate her retirement and new lease on life. And he knew all of this and still chose to not give us a heads up of what that 30 min would cost us. All this company cares about is greed. His manager called us the next day to see what had happened and when we explained it, instead of giving us a reimbursement, had the nerve to offer us a deal if we ever come back to california and decide to use them again. Are you kidding me?! I will never use this company again. They don't give a crap about the families using their service. I honestly can't imagine a better rental experience. I got a great deal via Priceline, but that didn't affect the service in any way. They called me before my arrival and made sure all the information was correct - pro tip: call your auto insurance in advance to see if they'll cover the rental. They picked us up within 15 minutes at the airport and after signing the paperwork and inspecting the van we were on our way. (I knew I made the right choice when we passed a different rental agency with a line going around the building and another shuttle bus discharging more customers). The mini van we rented was dirty and smelled AWFUL! A thorough cleaning and air freshener in between rentals would go a long way. It was very unpleasant to deal with. We were also charged an entire day for bringing the vehicle back 2 hrs past 11am. Apparently 11am is their cut-off which was not communicated to us. We did complain about the dirty stinky vehicle and the employee just dismissed the complaint. The only positive was not dealing with a shuttle and being picked up and dropped off at airport, our driver was also very nice and gave a star for that. read more

We were on a 10 day vacation that had been planned for months. They would not swap the van out . We secured the door and completed our trip. Not a honest operation: was told pick up within 10 minutes to go to the rental office; it took 40 minutes total; once at the office the clerk demanded a pick up fee - something that's not on the reservation confirmation. The rental office is just outside of LAX. AVOID STATE VAN RENTAL!! I found State Van Rental through kayak.com. The company's online quoting and email confirmation said a total rental charge of $38. I specifically called to confirm how to get to the car rental office from LAX and was told "Just call this number when you arrive and we'll come get you in 10 minutes, and the other way around when dropping off the car". Flight arrived at 7:20pm. By the time we were picked up and got to the rental office, it was 8:30pm. Then they wanted our personal auto insurance information, and demanded the pick-up fee, saying we had been notified via an email. When we asked to see the email, they couldn't provide it. So they said they wouldn't charge us for it, but when we drop off the car we won't get a ride back to LAX. We were dumb-founded and were forced to pay the pick-up fee. Although this is not over a large sum of money, this is nevertheless an act of false advertising and fraud. AVOID STATE VAN RENTAL!! read more

DO NOT USE THIS PLACE..this place blows I wouldn't even give this place 1 star, but I have to give it to be able to review. First of all, the van they gave us was a piece of crap. All the warning lights kept going on (check oil, check engine, low air on tires) and the steering wheel made noises when turning. I'm pretty sure they should have everything checked out before renting to customers. The inside lights were hanging down by the electrical wire and the head rests were held together by tape. Upon return of the van, we were told that everything was fine after inspection. We had another van rented that was going to be late, so they told me it would be an extra $15.00 to turn it in to the LAX lot. They were even relieved because they were backed up due to large volume of returns on Sunday. The next day, they send me an invoice with an extra $80.00 charge for turning it in 2 hours late ($15.00 for the LAX fee and another day rental charge of $65.00). The representative told me it would only be $15.00. We also paid that $15.00 when returning the van and they charged it to us again. I get another email that they are charging us another $75.00 for each van for "extra cleaning charge." We've rented these vans multiple times from different companies and we've used the same polish that is easily washed off . We have never been charged for this in the past. It's especially shady that they charged us after they had already inspected the vans when we turned it in. When I spoke to the manager, he did not help me with anything and said that it took them 4 hours to clean each van. BS. He didn't even apologize for anything. My company rents cars almost on daily basis and my assistant fount "state van rentals" on kayak. Prices are super low but there is a reason for it. I just rented a mini van for a low price to travel to vegas for business. During my drive I realized that the brakes are not in good shape as I had to come to a stop on the freeway. I usually depend on the rental company to have their cars checked and serviced before they let a customer drive it off. The brakes got extremely noisy and grindy and when I called the rental company and I was told nicely by the owner to take the car to a jiffy lube and have it checked out. He was very nice about it. The problem was that I had meetings all day and if I had time or enjoyed taking cars to jiffy lube I would not have rented a car and would have driven my own car from LA to Vegas. The owner claimed that the car just got a check up 1000 ago which can not be the case since the tires pressure and oil change lights were on (unless their cars are serviced by Stevie Wonder) It was the last day of the convention i was attending and i had NO time to take a rental car for service. Then I decided NOT to risk driving the car at night and drive back in the morning since the car did not feel safe. They decided to charge me for the extra day and the lady that took the car back acted as if I owed them something. Do not rent from this company unless you don't mind going to jiffy lube to get their car checked on a Sunday morning. read more

I haven't written a review in a while, but now I agree with the low ratings. I went to this place because of their low rates, but once you throw in all the waivers, it really costs as much as any other neighbor business - no joke. Plus it doesn't help that you have to sign a credit card authorization that lets them charge whatever they want. I will admit that I had a complicated reservation, with four vans being picked up by different people. But, per their request, I e-mailed the details ahead of time. Then when my people went to pick up the vans, State Van Rentals calls me several times asking me about details that were on that e-mail. Long story short, two weeks later, I'm still debating charges (close to $250 over what should have been due) and have to call every couple days to bother them. For instance, they sent me an updated contract with some of the costs refunded. This guy Wayne keeps claiming that this never happens, the manager will call me back, blah blah...never happens. This time I called I think I annoy him so much that he's short with me when I say that the credit card costs on one contract haven't been refunded yet ("I don't know what you want"). Can't beat the price, location (very close to LAX), and customer service was efficient (handled everything through email). 2 stars for that. I can't give the remaining 3 stars due to the condition of the van I rented (2011 Dodge Grand Caravan with 60k+ miles). The maintenance of the vehicle was unacceptable for any rental agency. 1. The van was almost 2,000 miles past the recommended mileage for the next oil change 2. The interior clearly wasn't cleaned, as there was dust all over the dash, sticky residue on various parts of the interior, and the van wasn't vacuumed 3. The gas tank was only 14 full when I picked it up, which was a small inconvenience 4. There was very little tire tread which was felt acutely during inclement weather 5. Most dangerously, the brake pads were clearly worn out. Whenever moderate to heavy braking was required, you could hear and feel the brakes grinding into the rotors. Stopping distance and time were far longer than it should have been and I had several near accidents due to poor braking. No matter how much money one might save, driving safety comes first. I will only rent with these guys again if I know I'm getting a properly maintained vehicle. read more

Odd this rental received such low ratings. I was concerned about my reservation when I read the reviews, but i m so glad I did. I rented a van for 6 days in August with two carseats for $450. It includes $40 valet charge, because our plane landed very late at night. So the rental itself was only about $410, including taxes and fees. Our Dodge van was clean and well maintained. We picked up the van at lax airport (which was very convenient), and dropped off six days later at state van rental office, but our family just stayed in the van and someone drove us to the airport, so this was very convenient as well. MY WORSE RENTAL EVER. UNSAFE VANS. Same experience as many posts here. Unfortunate I didn't read the reviews before. First van: -upon leaving the parking, I notice the "low air"tire warning. I come come to the office and mention this. Response: "this car has a bad sensor; tires have been fully inflated; don't worry". -by the time I arrived home (~5 miles), the engine service light comes on. I have one of these "ODBII car connector". After plug it in, it doesn't look good at all. Too late to change the car. I can't leave for my trip as expected. First thing in the morning, I stop at PepBoys 100 yards from my house. Clear diagnostic (exhaust issues), with a "Sir, if I were you I wouldn't drive this car at all". Followed by a "we inflated the tires, they were really low" (low air warning disappeared). -that van had over 107K miles -back to the office, I got no admission of a problem. They gave me a new van Second van: -tire pressure: ok; engine light: off. so far so good. -I leave for my trip, 16 hours late from my schedule -a few surprises: door opener: not working; clock/radio: turning off on its own intermittently; brakes: very soft; oil change warning sign: on after 100 miles -that van had over 115K miles -back to the office, I asked to talk to a manager; nobody was available; I left my cell number; never got a call back. Beyond wasting time and money, I am very concerned with the safety of these cars. I highly recommend looking somewhere else, even if it means a few extra dollars read more

I just rented a 2015 Honda Odyssey from State Van, I was very apprehensive after reading some of the reviews. After speaking to Lindon on the phone I felt more at ease. When we landed we called State Van, they picked us up at the parking lot and brought us to the van. The van was exactly as Lindon said it would be, clean, we kept, great running condition and even had bottles of water for us. The staff at check were friendly and helpful. While booking they conformed its Ford Transit not Chevy one...But while renting gave Chevy with the ugliest seat and asked extra money to upgrade to Transit. We had a phenomenal rental experience with Lindon here at State Van Rental. My husband and I were moving from Vegas to LA and chose a Ford Transit 350 with seats removed for the task (you can pay a small fee and State will oblige). It's way more comfortable than a Uhaul, and at 7' tall it's easier to drive as well. State was non-stop accommodating with excellent communication and value. Driving back in an insane desert wind storm, I was so happy to be in a clean, comfortable van instead of a top-heavy dirty old Uhaul. 10 out of 10 will be renting mini vans here from now on. read more

Not a good experience, Be sure you understand their unlimited mileage policy. When we picked up the van, the guy asked me where would i take the van too. I replied California Nevada and Arizona. He told me if I drove to Arizona, I can have 200 miles per day in Arizona. Later when when he showed me the rental contact, Arizona was on the contact as unlimited miles. He explained later they haven't removed Arizona yet. Then he want to talk to someone and came out that we could have unlimited miles in Arizona. When we returned the car, we found that we had to pay for extra miles because we drove to Utah. The same guy explained to me that because I drove to Utah I won't get unlimited mileage. Well maybe I did not read the fine print but what he explained to me about Arizona made me understand that I could have 200 miles per day in Utah. Just to confirmed what I understand, I asked my cousin who was there when we pick up the van, what he understood was exactly what I understand. I told the guy I will pay for what it was but let me explained what I understood, he kept cutting me off. Not a good customer service. No listening. Misunderstanding is always happening but he should learn how to listen to what customer has to say. Update: Thank you Lynn and Lindon to sort things out. read more

This review is a little overdue. I rented a van through them this year for Labor Day weekend 9/05/15 - 9/09/15. After originally having a small mishap with my reservation dates everything was straightened out. When I arrived to the location to pick up the van I was blown away by the exceptional customer service I received by one of their employees by the name of Linden (I believe it's spelled this way). He went above and beyond to make sure I had a great experience with them. As far as the van, we wound up with an 8 passenger Toyota Sienna. The van was in great condition and we didn't have any problems with it at all. It got us from Los Angeles to Las Vegas without any problems even with the HEAT everything went smooth. I just dropped off my van tonight after a great weekend excursion and I had to share my experience. This is a small shop in LAX, but they really wowed me in the vehicle quality and the price. The 15 passenger van was really great reliable and well kept. Everyone felt safe and comfortable in this ride. State Van is a small rental company about 2 miles from LAX. I needed an 8 passenger van and they had the best price by over a hundred dollars for the week. I read a few bad reviews so I had a back up plan and confirmed with them the vehicle and price multiple times. THE GOOD: 8 passenger Toyota Siena for $256 for the week. Ran excellent, was nice, clean and met our needs for an 8 passenger mini van. Service was excellent to and from the airport and check in and out was faster than most rental companies. THE NOT PERFECT: It was supposed to be a 2010 or 2011 and it was a 2008 with 48,000 miles on it and many small blemishes typical of a 4 year old rental. Said he'd pick me up in 5 minutes and it was 12. OVERALL: I had a great experience & I would rent from them again if I need a van for 8 or more people. Great price and van worked great. read more

I made a reservation through the company site a few weeks prior to my visit. When I arrived to pick up the van I had reserved, the owner told me he did not have the vehicle I reserved. I showed him my reservation and he said my reservation email did not matter. Although the reservation clearly states "Thank you for your reservation with State Van Rental at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This is just a quick reminder to pick up your vehicle. Please check your reservation details below, and have a great trip!", he refused to honor the reservation. I needed an eight passenger van for my company that was coming to visit and was having trouble finding eight passenger vans at any of the main common rental places. I found this place and they gave me a great deal and were very easy to work with. Caution. I hired a van for two weeks. The brakes were faulty and dangerous. The real problems begin after the rental has finished. Two days after my rental finished my credit card was charged $103.00 for no apparent reason. I emailed them and was told there was no charge. I explained it was on my statement from " state van rentals ". A Lindon just said " we have no record of that, nothing to fix from our end " I called the card company to verify the charges and had to file a dispute. Then a month later, boom. Another $1400 on the card claiming they found some damage. Lindon, is a complete and utter waste of time. Don't make my mistake. Read the reviews on these clowns. Over an extended period of time it appears to be the same problems. Unsafe vehicles, over charging, unlawful charging and poor customer service. Just received an email from Lindon. Dec 12th 2013. He has found the charge of $103 that he repeatedly denied. He says " you probably bought the car back late ". Lol, it never ends. Update. Got an email from Alen saying he was the manager. I was charged the extra $103 because I hired the car at 10am and bought it back at 8pm which was past 10am so an extra day was charged. Problem is I actually returned it 14 hours early, not 10 hours late. Lol, these people are as dumb and thick as is gets. When I explained the simple math and days of the week to Alen the mental giant manager he replies with this. " you are correct. In fact the charge was not for bringing it late but for a child seat. No further emails will be read or answered, matter closed " As per their instruction I had to pay cash for the child seat when I picked it up. So now they want to charge for that again.
