I have been looking for a replacement for Peters Meat Market's kielbasi for years now. Was sad when they closed. Did some internet searching and found State Meats and their reputation. State Meats is still serving up some of the best kielbasa and smokies I've ever had. On my most recent visit, I purchased some cabbage and noodles, which are second to none in flavor. I also purchased some sauerkraut, wich again, is second to none. I purchased some borsht, but I'm not a fan of that soup. I also bought some chenahy and it was delicious. It reminded me of chili. If you like chili, you'll like chenahy. I also purchased some crepes. They were large and had a lot of filling in them. They were pretty good, but I wasn't a huge fan of them. They were filling. This was the 1st time I was at this neighborhood meat shop. I got some smoked Hungarian kielbasa, yum and double yum. They have pre made side dishes, I saw some cabbage rolls. After losing my usual sausage shop, I stopped in State Meats to check it out. They did not have what I wanted but I did buy some sausage which I promptly went home and snacked on. Also, their homemade kraut is sooo very good. Service is excellent and quick. The ambiance is very old world. You would believe you are in Europe. Unfortunately they could have a really good smoked kielbasa. But they don't smoke their kielbasa long enough to consider it to be smoked. Their double smoked kielbasa is not double smoked for a true European kielbasa. The reason by not truly smoking longer it removes the moisture and reduces the weight of the smoke kielbasa which then decreases their profits. read more

It shouldn't be hard to spend money at a business. I waited five minutes while two employees had casual conversation with a customer- no problem- and then the third employee asked who was next and I was cut in line by two gentlemen. When I let them know and they apologized it was no problem at all, but then I was still ignored by all three employees. I waited ten minutes to be ignored, so I walked out. Best Kielbasa hands down! Options are to buy it smoked or fresh Then the smoked options are pre sealed- vacuum packed or freshly smoked. Either option is superb compared to all other smoked kielbasa. Since they are not in my backyard I don't get here as often as I would like to but I wouldn't consider anywhere else for my holiday sausage needs.. Their schnitzel is out of this world and they are always willing to give you a sample of anything. And trust me they are not stingy on their samples. Definitely worth the drive and prices are always reasonable for the high-quality they provide. read more

Wow this place is phenomenal! I've been searching around for different meat stores just widening my horizons when it comes to buying meat . I've heard about this place for years and have never been. They do only sell pork products but that's ok because they have all the yummy stuff. They have all the things my Polish Grandma used to feed me when I was a kid . Such as goose liver, head cheese, sauerkraut balls,beet salad, kielbasa, and a hot food set up with restaurant connected next door. They have veinershnitzel,potato pancakes, and all those European delights . The staff is very friendly and efficient. The place is very clean , the meat side and restaurant side. I have stopped in to State Meats a few times, each hoping to be "WOW-ED" but it never happens. The food is delicious. Authentic, well-prepared and aplenty. I love the smoked meats- kielbasa, sausages, hot dogs. The German potato salad, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage.... everything I've tried is very good. What lacks here is the service. It's very inconsistent and at times has been downright poor. I was in on 7/9, in the last half hour of the day and I was certainly treated like it was the last half hour of the day. The girl made it clear she didn't really want to help me and put on a good sass while she begrudged through it. If I'm in the neighborhood, I may swing in again, but the variety (no chicken, no steaks) and service will keep me from recommending it to anyone. read more

Best place in Cleveland area to get sausages. Their specialty is definitely the kielbasa. I've had both the smoked and fresh kielbasa on many occasions and have never been disappointed. Grilling the fresh kielbasa is one of my favorite summer meals. The only other thing I've eaten from here is the smokies, having tried all three kinds, wet, dry, and jalapeno. Jalapeno have a solid kick to them. My personal favorite is the wet. The service is always very friendly. Small parking lot on the north side of the building. While Michael Symon has professed his love for Czuchraj Meats at the West Side Market, he is wrong. This is where he needs to spread the love. I have yet to find better kielbasa ((~$6/#) anywhere, not only in the city, but around the country. The wiener schnitzel rivals the Hofbrau Haus. And the smokeys (~$10/#) are hands down the best in Cleveland. Heck even the hot dogs (~$5/#) can't be beat. They carry a wide range of deli meats and cheese, along with sides like olive salad and cabbage rolls. They carry a selection of condiments and breads as well. The staff is friendly and the store is spotless. And to do my PSA, yes they speak English here. Free samples to boot! I don't think I've tasted better fresh Kielbasa, not even from my own mother or grandmother. It is SO good! We always stop hear traveling between the East and the West. We like to stock up and freeze it - and the store will even vacuum seal it for us. I just had my next to last ring of the fresh Kielbasa for Easter. Also, the smoked is fantastic as well. Not a lot of fat or grizzle in either. We once tried another well known Polish deli in the area and this Kielbasa beats it hands down. This is my family's favorite place. My mom and I have been here probably about 4 or 5 times in the past week because the food is just that good. Their double-smoked kielbasa, schnitzel sandwich, chebureks, and Oliviye are to die for! I really do recommend the aforementioned food items, you can get them here or next door at the little restaurant they have. I can't describe the taste of the double-smoked kielbasa, but it's so yummy. The schnitzel sandwich has homemade sauerkraut on it, and a spicy mustard. The mustard is super intense and will definitely make you do a dance, but the sandwich isn't the same without it. So good! Chebureks would remind you of an empanada, but in my opinion, they're way better. Try one, you'll love it. The oliviye is a Ukrainian potato salad with ham, peas, and potatoes in it. I actually hate peas, but I will eat the oliviye! If you haven't been to State Meats or Mama Maria's (next door to them), you are missing out! This is an excellent Eastern European Deli and the have house made meats and deli specialties of all things Polish, Ukrainian, and probably other ethnic items that I didn't catch the first time in. Drive down State Road from the Ukrainian Orthodox church, past the Ukrainian bakery and follow the scent of the smoke house to the State Meats parking lot. Inside the small butcher shop are the unique and persisting meats and prepared foods brought to Cleveland by our Eastern European predecessors. Before you have a chance to look at much someone behind the counter is handing you free samples. The samples are more than generosity. They introduce you to something that may be unfamiliar or remind you what sausage or ham ought to taste like. The store carries home made sausages and delicatessen meats as well as hard to find products such as dry cottage cheese. Refrigerated prepared foods run the gamut from the typical Cleveland stuffed cabbage to things Ukrainian. A favorite is the chunky smoked sausage where large chunks of pork are encased rather than the more common ground. State Street sold sausage sandwiches that were so popular that they were gloriously described as dashboard food by Michael Stern of Roadfood. Their popularity expanded to the building next door where carry out dinners and the sausage sandwiches are sold. The sandwich at $3.99 is far more representative of our hometown than the mish mash called the Polish Boy. No real Polish boy or real Clevelander would put cole slaw and barbecue sauce on smoked kelbasa when there is sauerkraut, mustard, and horse radish. One of my coworkers was going to stop by this place at lunch a couple of weeks ago and asked if I wanted to come along. Holy smokes am I glad I did. You may miss it once you turn south on State from Brookpark but it helps if you turn right just past what was once the Jigsaw Saloon. I think it is the Rock City. The parking area is between the buildings. The store is small and the people are very friendly. We were hardly two steps in the door when we were offered HUGE samples of the house-made kilebasa and then samples of the chicken and pork schnitzel they had fresh for lunch. The coolers are jam packed with meats made right there by the people who are behind the counter. I got a pound of the fresh kielbasa and some of the smoked pork chop ends to take home as well as some schnitzel and a pierogie (about 5" across") for lunch. They also had fresh potato pancakes and a bunch of items in the deli case. Not to mention all the sauces and vegetables in jars around the store and the fresh breads. The prices were very reasonable, the quality first-rate and the people friendly and helpful. This is my new favorite store. read more
