I never thought I'd need to write this kind of review about a healing center, but my recent…read moreexperience at Rise Healing Center left me stunned by how cold and unfeeling the administration can be when real life happens. I had an appointment scheduled with my therapist -- someone I respect deeply and who has been consistently compassionate. But on that day, my wife was stranded 50 miles away, alone, in a dangerous situation. Her safety was at risk. I canceled my session immediately so I could get to her. I expected understanding. Instead, I was told I would be charged a late-cancellation fee -- not reduced to zero, not waived -- because "policy is policy." When I explained that this was a genuine emergency, the owner's response was essentially that they can't decide what is or isn't an emergency for someone, and that my therapist "deserves to get paid" regardless of the situation. She called it a "concession" to only charge me half of the $120 fee. Read that again: my wife's safety was on the line, I dropped everything to help her, and the owner's priority was enforcing a billing policy. There was no empathy, no discernment, no acknowledgment that safety comes before revenue -- just a rigid defense of the rules and an insistence that charging me was justified because I had "agreed" to it in the intake paperwork. The contrast between my therapist's genuine care and the administration's cold, transactional stance could not have been sharper. It was disheartening to see a place that advertises trauma-informed care fail so completely to practice it when it mattered most. If you are considering this practice, understand that emergencies -- even ones involving the immediate safety of a loved one -- may still result in charges. And based on my experience, don't expect compassion from the administration when it conflicts with their policy.

Keith Mar, MFCC - Note the dates. Want to pay the provider right away and then pester him for 4 months to file the claims?

I give the guy an extra star for being Chinese American so he understood some of the unique…read morechallenges facing Chinese families. In the end, I question his ability as a therapist when he can't get his act together and file medical claims in a timely and professional manner. It must be my ISTJ personality, but I really do not like people who can't live up to their responsibility. I doubly dislike people who lie about what they have done just so they can temporarily procrastinate doing their job. Keith Mar is suppose to be an in network provider, but he insisted that I pay him the full amount at the end of each session rather than the insurance company negotiated rate. It should have been a red flag, but I was the patient in a vulnerable place and I did not want to seek out others, make appointment, and wait. Second red flag is that we sometimes talk about politics and how Asians are being discriminated against and bullied in school. I am fairly progressive, maybe not as much as him. While I agreed with his views, this was not the occasion to dedicate any time to those topics. I had 6 sessions with him from June to August and had to quit when the claims fall behind. I texted him numerous times between August and November about filing the claims and was told that he already filed (see what I said earlier about lies and procrastination). The date on the insurance record showed that he filed on 11/21/2017, but by then, the insurance company refused to pay because the claims were not send in a timely manner. Of course, this does not affect Mr. Mar one bit because he already received his payments from me. I am the one who will not be getting reimbursement from the insurance company. Except for my awesome dentist and ok dermatologist, I have been very disappointed and disgusted with healthcare providers in this city. Every single one cared way more about getting paid than their unique roll as care providers.
