Let me count the ways how much I miss and love Equinox…read more Yes, I know--it's a high-end gym. But you truly get what you pay for. I was a member of this location for over a decade, and since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like it. The nearest one to me now is in Atlanta, and I still miss the San Mateo club regularly. This location has everything you could possibly want in a fitness facility--and then some. The Fitness Floor Downstairs is a beautifully air-conditioned workout space designed for people who are serious about exercising. No distractions, no crowds hovering by the windows--just a clean, focused environment. You'll find: * Full weight training equipment * Recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills * Dedicated spin, Pilates, TRX, and group fitness studios * A large open stretching area with foam rollers * Cold, filtered water stations throughout * Staff available for spotting if you're training solo It's efficient, professional, and thoughtfully designed. Locker Rooms & Amenities The locker rooms feel more like a boutique hotel than a gym. They are consistently spotless and fully stocked with: * Plush towel service * Spacious showers with teak benches * Steam rooms infused with eucalyptus * Complimentary razors, Q-tips, and personal care items * Premium Kiehl's products It's luxurious, yes--but also incredibly practical. You can comfortably get ready for work, dinner, or travel without feeling rushed. The Rooftop Pool One of the standout features is the heated rooftop pool. It has multiple lap lanes, cabanas, and water aerobics equipment, and it truly feels like a mini country club in the middle of downtown San Mateo. The pool is heated year-round, which means you can swim in any season--something you quickly get spoiled by. They even provide sunscreen from Supergoop!, along with full towel service. It's those little details that make the experience feel elevated. Classes, Spa & Services The class offerings are extensive and easy to manage through the app. Signing in is seamless--just scan your phone and go. Highlights include: * Yoga in a beautiful bamboo studio with HEPA filtration and ceiling fans * Pilates (available as private, duo, or small-group sessions) * A full-service spa on the upper level * A juice bar and retail shop featuring premium fitness apparel Everything feels intentional, polished, and well-maintained. Location & Convenience The club is located right in the heart of downtown San Mateo, making it incredibly walkable. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and cafés nearby, including one of my favorite bakeries and specialty markets. Parking is also surprisingly easy for a downtown location: * Two-hour validation * Surface lot, garage, and rooftop parking options That convenience makes a big difference in daily use. Value & Membership Yes, membership can be expensive. However, many employers offer corporate discounts, which can make the cost more manageable. In my case, the value absolutely justified the price because I used the facility regularly and took advantage of the amenities. Even when I relocated, canceling my membership was straightforward and professional--no pressure, no hassle. Bottom Line Equinox San Mateo set the standard for what a fitness club should be: clean, thoughtfully designed, service-oriented, and genuinely enjoyable to use. If I ever move to another city with an Equinox, I will join again without hesitation. Because at the end of the day-- life is short, and you should live well.

I've been back to this 24 Hour Fitness a few times over the past few months and the age of the…read moreplace definitely shows but it does what it needs to do if you are looking for a gym to get a workout in. They recently installed a gate where you have to scan you membership in to open the gate. Feels a little bit extra and unnecessary but I guess this is probably to curtail folks from just walking in without checking in. Luckily I have my membership check-in on my apple watch, so it's easy enough. I was impressed that by the squat racks, all the plates were in their correct spots, which is rarity for any 24, so kudos to the members and staff for keeping things tidy. The machines are definitely starting to show their wear and tear and some feel like they are on there last legs but still functional. The functional training area with the astroturf needs some refresh. There's random weights and barely any kettlebells to choose from, honestly good luck finding a pair of the same weight kettlebell lol Since my last review, the basketball courts have been reopened and it looks like people were getting some run in the morning which is great to see. There was nets on the hoops, so I'd consider that a win. It's definitely one of the busier 24 hour fitness locations, so plan to mix up your workout if you are on a time crunch.

I find it comical that this location dare open itself up for reviews because there is nothing good…read moreto say, except for the cost. This message goes out to upper mgmt and folks in the corporate office: What exactly is your business model? Allow me a moment to elaborate... I understand the concept of "you get what you pay for" and for the rate of ~$30/month in the Bay Area, one could argue that this is a great deal. This comes at a price: 1. Broken machines seem to never get fixed 2. Weight labels on machines are worn out 3. The locker rooms are disgusting, including the toilets. When a dryer breaks, that's it - it never gets fixed. I've seen better at a busy train station! So is the business plan to simply get as many members as possible and never maintaining ANYTHING? Just let things break until people like myself go elsewhere or put up with it? Is that the trade-off for the low price? I f so, just admit it because it's very frustrating to deal with the lousy gym etiquette (people don't share equipment, the lack of proper footwear) and broken machines. Is this gym barely making a profit or losing money? Somehow, this location "found" funds to install a gated entry scanner so they will spend $ for that. For the rest, we can just deal with it, right? Maybe the executive level could forfeit some pay to run a decent buiness and fix the damn equipment. According to my sources, the average 24 Hour Fitness executive compensation is $235,955 a year and the most compensated executive makes $700,000 . https://www.comparably.com/companies/24-hour-fitness/executive-salaries How much money does it take to buy some labels and stick them on the machine weights? If there is money for a new gate, certainly $100 could cover some stickers so people don't have to guess what they are lifting. It's pathetic. I can ony hope the new Planet Fitness takes more members away. I know I get what I pay for but how many machines need to be broken until something gets fixed? And please, none of this "we strive to do better" because you do not! There is a problem with this business and at the San Mateo location, in particular (Redwood City is much better but not perfect). Can you guys simple FIX machines when they break? Perhaps you should cut back on the hours, save some money, and use those savings to FIX machines and put labels on them. 18-HR Fitness is good enough. Do not ask me to call to discuss this unless you post a public response to my points here so that everyone can read it.

We came by on an afternoon during open gym - you pay a flat fee to get up to 4 hours of playtime. While there are some staff members present that might give a bit of guidance on how to go through the courses, it is relatively hands off and you are on your own. Parents can sit on the chairs on the side to watch, but can also go on the mat as needed to assist their kids. My son really enjoyed his experience here - when he started off, he could only go halfway up the warped wall but after a couple of hours of practice, was able to reach the top with his hand. He is already looking forward to his next visit here so he can try again. Everyone wears their outside shoes on the mat so I think that takes away a bit from the cleanliness of the place, especially on the type of rainy day that we came by. Bathrooms could have also been a bit better maintained - paper products were running low and soap ran out as well. Not a huge deal as we could work around this, just something that could be optimized for an even better experience.

Most of the other Pilates classes that I try to go to have random times that are not convenient for my schedule, but Body Rok has classes available all day and on weekends as well, so it's very convenient. Instructors are super motivating. The reforme machines are clean. The studio itself is very clean. (It visibly used to be a SoulCycle studio, but that's totally fine.) I'd say that my only complaint is that I wish there were mirrors on all four walls. There are only mirrors in the front and the back, and sometimes it makes it hard for me to correct my form. All in all, it's a great Pilates studio, and I really hope that they stay open. The location is good, downtown San Mateo, and it's easy to grab a snack afterwards.
