I brought my 2008 Jeep Wrangler to Starr Auto because it wouldn't start unless I shifted between Park and Neutral several times. I explained that I believed the issue was caused by the neutral safety switch, which is a known and common issue for this model. Instead of inspecting that part, the shop replaced my starter and battery terminal posts, charging me $966. The problem was never fixed -- the Jeep still has the exact same starting issue. When I returned, Starr Auto admitted it might actually be the neutral safety switch and said they could repair it for another $200. That clearly shows the first repair was misdiagnosed and unnecessary. I'm a disabled veteran with VA disabled license plates, and I rely on my vehicle for daily mobility. I trusted this shop to treat me fairly, but instead I feel taken advantage of and disappointed by their lack of professionalism and integrity. I've since filed a credit card dispute for the $966 charge and would strongly caution other customers -- especially veterans -- to avoid this business. read more

I operated Turo business and I was in a bind because I had to leave town and needed an annual inspection. This is pretty simple lights, brakes, etc. Nothing complicated or difficult, and even done thoroughly shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. I was charged $164, the going rate is about $30. I felt like I was robbed, and they knew they had me over a barrel. The excuse I was given, we have to pay our guys an hourly rate. OK, even if you're paying them $35 an hour that's still doesn't come close to what you charged me. A situation that could have quickly turned perilous, was averted by this heroic, quick thinking, guardian angel. Small local auto repair shop. Came in to get an air filter installed in my car. Was assisted by Trevor. Very friendly and helpful, even though they were going to be closing in 30 minutes. The technician that installed the air filter gave me a mini-course on the maintenance, since I bought a lifetime warranty air filter. Starrs and staff are so incredibly kind, knowledgeable and customer oriented. They estimate costs responsibly and accurately and complete the job on time. They help you weigh your options with consideration to find the right solution for your time/budget/needs. My family has lived in the area over 20 years and once we found Starrs we will never go anywhere else. This has been at least a 15 year commitment with this shop, and my grandpa is very well versed in machinery so he knows when he's being bluffed, causing us to go from shop to shop trying to find an honest business until we found Starrs - start here! Words cannot describe how upset I am. If you value your hard earned money, I beg you to stay away from this corrupt business. Today I went in because my car was making a knocking sound from the rear passenger side tire. I had forgotten to bring the wheel lock and told them I would bring it right back. I returned approximately 30 minutes later and was told that the rear drivers side tire was actually where the knocking was coming from. I was escorted to the back to find my car already up with the wheel off before even giving them the lock to remove the lug nuts. I was told that the lugs were "finger tight and came right off". I was told the rear bearings had been "chewed up" because the tire was loose and needed to be replaced. They hadn't even removed the brake rotor before "diagnosing the issue". Even though only one side was affected , I was told both wheel bearings needed to be replaced because the unaffected side may only last another 60k miles or so. I was quoted nearly $1200 for the job and $300 for a battery replacement! THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A BATTERY! ($55 at Walmart). I declined to have any work done due to multiple red flags and was charged $130 for the Mickey Mouse diagnosis and "labor". They put the rear tire back on and BAM! the knocking sound was gone! My car was running just fine. NOTHING was wrong with the car other than some loose lug nuts and I was nearly robbed of $1200 for unnecessary parts/labor! I understand that times are tough and we all need to make a living but this is not the way. I can't begin to imagine how many before me have been bamboozled by these indecent individuals. If you have any sense you will take your business elsewhere. read more

During Hurricane Ida, we evacuated to Navarre. As if we didn't already have enough to deal with, I was having trouble fueling my truck just before returning home. The pump would continuously stop, and 1/2 tank would not get us back to Louisiana. The first shop I went to could not look at my truck until the next day. After explaining the situation to Starr's, they diagnosed my truck that day, had the parts delivered the next morning, and had me on the road the same afternoon (They replaced the EVAP filter and cleaned the charcoal residue from the gas tank). I even received some encouraging words from Richie, who has weathered several hurricanes. Starr's is professional and efficient, and I would definitely recommend. read more

They've done expert oil changes on various cars of friends and family. I've had my Jeep since 2009. A fifteen year old vehicle will have problems along the way, which I often fixed myself.....but 2 weeks ago I had some crazy stuff going on. Car would start up but not swicth out of park, the headlights and wipers would auto engage, AND THEN NOT SHUT OFF. Youtube said it had to be the TIPM, so I bought a used one from a junk yard....installed in less than 5 minutes....annnnnd no changes. I finally ran into something I could NOT do myself. Brought it to STARRS and there were only TWO brand new Tippins in North America. Once that had it in, my Jeep was back to normal and I was driving it a few hours later. While there, there was other things I knew were wrong, but I didn't feel like dealing with so they fixed all that too. i would advise not taking any vehicle repair to this facility. My wife took her vehicle to understand why the heating system was not blowing hot air. Instead of advising of a diagnostic charge, pressure test on the coolant system (normal charge $40), then informing the customer. They took her keys w/ out informing any charge, then held her hostage for $140 w/ those keys until paid. Then to get attacked by 3 techs @ the front when Asking questions, very unprofessional. I'd probably rank the process of buying a used car slightly more enjoyable than a novacaineless root canal and slightly less enjoyable than the sound of a septic tank alarm. The only thing imaginable that might make the process worse that I can imagine is doing so in a town where you know no one and nothing about the car business. And yet, two months ago, I found myself doing just that. We're new in town from waaaaaaay out of town so we had to relegate ourselves to what we could find on the internet and recommendations from new friends and neighbors. Where we bought our vehicle is immaterial to this particular review. I'll just say that we bought a sensible, no frills mid-range crossover from a dealership of a different brand. I know enough to be confident on a test drive and a visual inspection of a new engine, but I was taking a leap of faith and I knew it. We were alright for about two months with it, making grocery and errand trips up and down 98, but one morning our new push-button ignition just wouldn't turn over. All of a sudden what I considered a solid diagnostic skillset just didn't translate to the new wire diagrams and ECM module. It might as well have been the lunar lander. There was nothing I could do about it. I was the proud owner of a one-and-a-half ton paperweight. Being new homeowners and new business owners, we don't have a lot of spare cash on hand. So when Starr's was recommended, we were skeptical and we asked around. By the time the fourth person told us Starr's was the only place to go, we pulled the trigger and called for a tow. In the span of a few hours (on a Friday afternoon) they had it loaded on a flatbed, diagnosed, fixed up and running. And it cost us roughly $120 less than quoted elsewhere. The shop is clean. The women handling accounting is lovely. The owner / chief mechanic is impressively polite and personable. And their location couldn't be more convenient. A+++. If you're hesitating, don't. You won't find better. And we won't be going elsewhere. read more

I've now taken my Mini and Mazda in for everything from simple oil changes (the last place I went failed to change the filter), new tires/breaks and some door mechanical issues. Took my late model Mercedes to Starr's automotive because the battery was going flat. They quoted $75.00 to diagnose the problem. They had the car for a week and charged $900 to replace an overhead control module (dome light) yet they did not have the necessary equipment to program it, requiring a $300.00 trip to the dealer. The dealer informed me that it was a $300.00 part that take an hour to replace and program. They would have charged $500.00 out the door. When I dropped the car off they promised it in a couple of days, well that turned into a week, and I had to go to work out of town for a month. They said it would be no problem to pick it up when I got back.That turned out not to be the case. I dealt with a cocky, rude kid named Richie Starr. After finally completing the repair two weeks later. He started calling me demanding payment. I reminded him that he agreed to wait until i returned home. He started demanding payment or he was going to put a mechanics lien on the car and sell it as well as start charging $25.00 a day storage. He would not take a check or credit card and demanded cash only. I had a friend extricate the car from him with cash in hand and drive it to the dealer for proper repairs and programing. The whole experience left a bitter taste in my mouth and caused unnecessary aggravation. I would not recommend this company to anyone. read more

I have a long story with my Starr's Auto Repair. It involves personal insults from the owner, damage done to my vehicle, struggling to get my key back from them once paid, and more. They gave me a wrong diagnostic, tried to charge me more than the Nissan dealership, charged me more than we agreed upon, and left my SUV a mess when I told them I wouldn't get the work done. I should've known calling them was a mistake when the tow truck driver, Sonny, tried to pick up my neighbors SUV instead of mine, not realizing they were 2 different types of SUVS (Xterra vs Pathfinder). Me and my family have been coming to Starr's for several years now. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful, typically going the extra mile to get our cars back to us in safe, working order. They've been great to us, even helping to get me towed back to Navarre once when I was stranded out in Pensacola after an accident in the worst storm I'd ever driven in. No other towing companies were willing to come out due to the weather, but Starr's pulled through and finally got us home after a rough, miserable time sitting in my wrecked car in a neighborhood I wasn't familiar with. Had to have my car towed. The original company towed my car to the wrong address and left my car outside of Star Auto by a utility pole. When they were supposed to tow it to business next door. The car is not drivable. Joe at Star Auto very very kindly helped us to get our car to the right address and didn't even charge us. So thankful for the help during a very stressful time. read more

I would highly recommend against ever using this shop and I'll never use them again. We needed a water pump ($73, fan clutch and all, any retail outlet anywhere) and got charged over $700. Their attitude was great until we tried to work out a payment plan. (The owner's direct quote: "I made a deal with the bank, they don't work on cars and I don't loan money".) They never gave us a direct quote on the final bill ("we won't know until we get in there what's going on") and led us to believe it would be a $200 repair ("your assumption was correct, it was the water pump"). Not only that, you only have 3 days to pay them and pick up your vehicle or they start charging outrageous "storage fees". They have a monopoly on towing in the area, if you want your insurance to cover that. My advice is to pay the extra towing fee and go somewhere else - ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

Once again Starr Auto came thru for us! My boyfriend was stranded on Hgwy 98 after he his car radiator hoses burst on him! He called and they came, picked him up and towed our car to their shop! Mind you they came in ten minutes! Then they were nice enough to give him a ride to our near by apartment. The repairs would have been done sooner but the parts had to be ordered. Still, Starr was prompt, professional and very reasonable on the total cost of the repair. A second event happened when my boyfriend ran over some glass at the scene of a three car accident. He was able to put the spare on and drive it to Starr where they gave him a great deal on a new tire to match what he had. I can't praise enough about how great these guys are. However, for a VERY reasonable price, he repaired the tire right then and I was on my way. They never did and charged me over 600 for other crap I didn't need.. just to install a distributor and set cam retard .. they're are con artists and will overcharge for their service. Way overpriced. They are really nice people and do a good job but Holly crap. My oil change ended up being $80 (78.98). Never have I gone to a place and got charged $80 for a Toyota oil change. I just wanted to support the local business and since it's down my street I said why not. I didn't even ask how much it cost because I assumed it wouldn't be more than what Toyota dealership charges, which is $60. I definitely won't go back for anything. They charge $10 for a qt of mobil full synthetic ow-20. So that alone is $50 dollars then $4 dollars for the filter and the rest is maintenance charge and other fees. Just so you know, at Walmart 5qt of extended Premium Mobile full synthetic is $28 (cheaper for the regular full synthetic) and the filter is $6. I should of done it myself for $34 dollars or gone elsewhere because every where else I called after getting my oil change is under $60. Damn man, $80, really pisses me off lol read more

I was in a bind and took my Maxima for a major rebuild. Mechanically it came out ok. I had mentioned I had some work done at Goodyear. They showed me three new spark plugs and three old plugs and said Goodyear had not done a good job on the tuneup they had done. When I told them the Goodyear was in Memphis they were surprised because they were trying to run down the local Goodyear. I know the Memphis tuneup was a good one. When I later returned and said the cruise control was not working and related to the rebuild they charged me a couple of hundred dollars and could not fix it. I took it to a competent shop and for less than a hundred they connected a couple of vacuum line incorrectly positioned and it works fine. Cannot recommend this shop to anyone. I can't stand lying and incompetence. Hard to believe they are still in operation. read more
