i have shopped here in the past but will never return nor recommend this store to anyone. I returned a heating pad the day after I purchased it. I was told when I bought that there was no return unless it didn't work. the heating pad has 4 temp. settings...warm, low, medium, high. I had put it on the highest yet the heat was not that great. The pad was tested and manager told me the heating pad worked and refused to refund and kept on insisting I said it did not work. I corrected her several times when she insisted it worked but that I had said it did not. i repeated to her that at no time did I say it did not work but that the heat amount on high is very low. if it is that low on max I asked her what amount of heat is given off on low and medium.? She chose to ignore the question but just kept on insisting that I said it did not work...which I never ever did. She told me that it is the heat level set up by the company. i then suggested since others have complained about the same issue maybe she, as the manager, should contact the company to add a sticker on the box " minimum heat emitted on max" or at least have one heating pad available for customers to try. GO ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HERE. I dropped by with a prescription this morning, and called inside so someone would come to the side door and help me. I waited five minutes, and then called again. And then I waited five more minutes, and called again. Someone finally came out and took my script, but when I opened my mouth to talk to her, she literally put a flat hand in my face as if to say, "Stop talking." Been shopping at Starkman's for decades. They are the best "go to" store in Toronto for special items. Sometimes, I call ahead and my order is waiting for me. For obvious reasons, I appreciate their no return policy. Physically sick people can try the patience of Job. They have a tough job but do it very well. I used their website to order a product that wasn't in their store. I guess this is considered "special order" even though that's not mentioned at anytime you make the order. Anyways, I placed the order for one product. At no time did it say an estimated delivery date, before or after I checked out. I emailed them and they said I get an email when it's being shipped out but no time frame. It took 1.5 weeks to get the product. I needed that product asap. I received an email Monday, 2 days after I placed the order and was told I would receive the product by Friday. I never got the product until the following Wednesday. I had to call many times to find out what was happening with my order as I needed it asap. The lady on the phone didn't really show any concern when I told her I needed the product asap as it would be useless if I received it any later. She was quick to rush the conversation and end the call. Not the best customer service.... They need to include an estimated delivery time on the website and make it clear where the products come from and how long it could take. When it comes to medical products, those are time sensitive. So if a product takes a long time to arrive, it could be useless by the time it arrives. Also, PAY ATTENTION to the return policy. Read it in full before you purchase anything. On the policy it says nothing about special orders being non-refundable but if you want to return a special order, they will inform you that they don't do refunds on those orders. Positive: They had the option to order the product from their site where no one else did in Toronto. Was the only place I could "easily" place an order for the product I needed. And they do have pick up in store if they have the product in store. Only giving 2 stars because they had the option to order my product. read more

I would prefer to give this place zero stars. Absolutely horrendous customer service. I wish I read reviews before I wasted my time here. I came looking for a lumbosacral support belt for my grandfather who couldn't be with me while I was shopping. The salesperson brought me to a closet where they store these things, and found there were only two options, one of which was certainly too small and another which looked big but I figured would fit my grandfather since he's got a larger belly. The salesperson tried it on herself to demonstrate the size. She tells me it non-refundable and something in my gut told me to walk away but I knew my grandfather needed this thing and I had already failed to find one at two other stores. I was desperate so I bought it, only to find it out is actually way too big for my grandfather. I called and asked if there was anyway they could still do a refund because they touched it more in store than I did and she said for me to bring it back and speak with the manager as it would be up to him if I could return it. I finally had time today so I went and the manager would not look me in the eye, and only spoke to the salesperson I asked to direct me to the manager, saying "we told her already we won't take it back we already said no" and I reiterated that I was told to come back and explain my situation and that it has been touched more before my purchase than afterward. The manager still wouldn't look at me and walked away saying "we already told you it's non-refundable" with his back turned to me! Disgustingly rude and disrespectful! This is the guy that runs or maybe even owns the place???! Never again. I wanted to support a smaller business but this place is completely undeserving. I had a much better time at a Wellwise in a rougher part of town, with a few minutes left before closing. FORGET THIS PLACE. Do not spend your hard-earned money here. Everything they sell looks like it was manufactured in 1981 I am not joking. I made a colossal mistake spending any time in this store and hope to prevent other people from similar disappointment. Its clear they're desperate to move inventory at any cost, at the expense of customer experience and satisfaction. The customer service here is despicable. I have never been treated more poorly in any other store in my life. I was returning an item after more than 10 days. I explained the reason and that is was still sealed int he package. It turned out I brought the wrong receipt as I had shopped there many times in the past. I was told to go home and get the receipt and was told they would exchange the item for me. Right away, I went home, got the receipt, then when I returned was treated VERY POORLY by the manager. He accused me of lying and told me he had no time to hear my story. He simply refused to return the item even though the girl before him said to get the receipt to do the exchange ??? THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT LOYAL CUSTOMERS??? I felt humilitated in the middle of the store and will NEVER go back again. It is so sad that Mr. Starkman sold his business to these gaugers but better prices are everywhere else. I was just trying to keep supporting a neighbourhood business. Not anymore and will let everyone know how the management regards their customers. Deplorable. Been coming here for many years for compression stockings. The service has always been very kind and helpful. You can even try on the different shades of compression stockings to match your tone. I was referred by my doctor to attend Starkman's to pick up a Peak Flow Meter at Starkman's. So I attended and bought the item and took it home. I opened it at home and realized that the package was open on the inside and there was no chart inside the box, as my doctor had told me about. I returned the next day and showed the lady that the meter package was open and told her there was no chart. She took it to the manager and I could hear the manager complain that I could not return it as there are no returns. So I had to stand up to the lady and tell her that if they were concerned about hygiene then why should I be the one to accept an opened package? She proceeded to tell me that they would ask the company if they would take it back and only IF they would, then they would order me a new one. Then she also told me that the manager said that there was no chart included in the box. I told her that my doctor told me there would be on and she said well there isn't one. Fast forward and the following week I get told that the new one has come in from the company. I pick up the product and LOW AND BEHOLD, the meter is sealed AND THERE IS A INSTRUCTIONAL BOOKLET WITH A CHART!!!!! I don't feel customer service was what it could be but I will give them that they ordered the item quickly. read more

Ever find yourself looking for some random medical supplies that you can't find at Shopper's Drug Mart? Probably not. But... If you are, you'll probably find it at Starkman's. This place has been here for as long as I can remember. I always had a strange fascination wondering what I would find if I ever went in. I guess over the years my imagination had lead me to believe that it would be like Frankenstein's laboratory when I stepped through the doors - all scalpels and strange surgical equipment I'd rather be unaware of. In reality: it's bright, clean, organized, and the staff are always looking to help you find exactly what you're looking for. It's nothing like I had built up in my imagination, and that's a good thing. The first time I went in I was buying supplies for a home birth (too much information?) and they had everything I needed at very reasonable prices - staff quickly helped me find everything on my list.. I've since been back a few times for random supplies that I'm not sure I would find elsewhere. This store is always busy but also always have staff on hand wanting to assist. Highly recommended for all your random home surgical and medical supplies. read more

When I was searching for the correct size, the staff had no problem dropping what they were doing and helped by opening all the packages until I found the perfect one. They should keep him and promote him to Store Manager.*** Really sad to write this review as I love the fact that they are local and have been in the neighborhood a very long time. The customer service is really atrocious from everyone except the Filipino lady unless you are clearly one of their friends. I returned a product and am still waiting for the credit to be processed. This was my second visit to the store. The first time I was buying a syringe for a DIY project. I received sideways glances from staff while perusing the size list. I assumed that since people use syringes for all kinds of things that perhaps they had a bad experience and let it slide. Perhaps less stigma next time? Nope. A customer rep stood staring right next to me and refused the place the product I chose in my hand, insisting on walking me to the register (strike one). I decided to keep shopping until realizing another rep was staring at me with a horrid gaze. I decided it was time to leave, but couldn't before waiting several minutes being ignored by her as she talked about Starbucks. Then: "Are you just here to buy this?" (strike two). Finally, I was over charged, and the two reps gathered to laugh as I walked out the door (strike three). Everyone else shopped independently. Picked up 3 items 3 days ago. One item was a piece of medical equipment, and the female store manager who sized it made a big deal of telling me it was non-refundable, which made sense to me. Tried to return one of the other off-the-shelf items still sealed in its original packaging 3 days later and they wouldn't do it. This makes no sense. It's still sealed, and at no time was I told it wasn't returnable, as she did with the other item. Spoke with the same manager who pointed to the receipt and said it was stamped no return. Why go to the bother of telling me more than three times that I couldn't return the medical equipment, but not mention it about the other items?? The item is plastic-sealed in its original packaging. I too run a small business, and understand the importance of outstanding customer service. I now understand why these people get two stars on the reviews. read more

Bought some slip on booties--like the kind that you wear over your shoes at the airport. I bought them because I was renovating my home and wanted some protection for the workmen parading in and out. Turned out that I found my old big box of booties and tried to return the unopened booties. They would not accept the return. I would definitely never buy anything here again. read more

Customer service is so terrible. It is hard to find words. I found 2 other customers in the store today at noon having an equally horrible time. I dealt with Benji who was loud, rude and unhelpful. He shouted at me in front of customers because I was not willing to pay for goods I did not receive. The supposed GM who says he is Jim Gard simply clings to the fact that they have been in business since 1929. So awful and prices are through the roof. Moving on to 2015 from 1929 and will try well.ca. Good reviews. This place is an old school disaster. read more

I think there has been a change of management and staff. Mr. Starkman doesn't seem to be there, and the employees at the store should not be entrusted to run a pencil stand in Bangalore. We had been buying from them for years but in the last year there had been missed orders, overcharging, disorganization and rudeness. I say "had" because we switched to another supplier and have not looked back. My GF is a quadriplegic so we spend a lot of money each year on certain healthcare supplies that she uses. read more

It saddens me to write this review as I was very excited to find a store with accessible medical supplies so close by to me. This place has decent products, lots of variety, medium pricing, but very very poor customer service. In their haste to rush me out of the store and remind me twice that the store was closing soon, a mistake was made with my invoice (overcharged), which I am noticing now as I am checking my receipt outside their now locked doors. My purchase was not a small one and in my opinion, customer service could have been much more professional, especially for someone who is spending a little bit more and inquiring about potential future business referrals (sending patients from our clinic just down the street). I am extremely disappointed and turned off, as I own a health clinic nearby and was hoping to send our patients here for bracing, mobility-aids and other medical supplies. read more

I have been going to Starkman Surgical Supply for over 15 years, and the customer service declines with each visit. As a Healthcare practitioner, I have spent easily a couple of thousand dollars there, as well as regularly referring clients to them. Never again! I went in last week to purchase a few items for a family member that had just recovered from surgery, and needed a pillow, a bath bar and bath board. The employee that reluctantly assisted me, spoke to me impatiently, as if i were inconveniencing her. I went through my list of items, and before i made my purchase, i confirmed that if these items were not exact or correct, "Can I refund these items?" I was told that I had 3 days. I explained that the person I am purchasing for lives in the East end and I need at least a week. Before I left, I told the manager/Owner that I thought the clerk was rude and impatient. He didn't apologize, or reassure me that he will follow up. When she returned to the counter, the manager began chatting with her about the weather! One week passes, and I must return 2 of the 3 items purchased, because they are the wrong size. Bath board was refunded, but they would not take the pillow back, even though it was unopened, still sealed in it's original package! The same lovely clerk told me that the owner does not take pillows back due to the body making contact with it and contaminating it. I get that, but on an unopened plastic sealed pillow? Come on! The Manager began yelling at me saying he remembered me from last week, and that i was rude, and he began pointing his finger in my face! He then turned around and gave another customer a product for free. Proving a point, loud and clear. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a pacifist, non-confrontational, and that it takes a lot for me to get upset. Well, I was truly upset at the horrible way I was treated! I will never tell my clients, friends or family to shop there, ever again. I did speak with Mr. Starkman, after I made a formal complaint to the BBB. I was refunded in full. read more

Avoid this place at all costs. Sitting waiting 90 minutes for some Mgr to come in who can make a decision on a return. They do not listen. I offered three options, store credit, cash, buy $90 of merchandise. They kept changing what they would do and are making me wait 90mins. I run a biz and have no time to wade coming back and forth. If I could I would offer a minus rating but unfortunately I cannot so here goes - on cyber Monday of Nov 2018 I chose a cane from the Starkman's site and paid for it online - after numerous attempts by me and my therapist to clarify with the store about the canes available at their store and online I was directed to the website to order which I did. After the order was placed and paid for I was informed by email by one Salma some staff that my order had been processed and that I should come to the store to pick it up (even though the website offered free delivery within Toronto on qualified purchases) because their trucks were supposedly over packed. When I explained my mobility issues and my having specifically ordered online with delivery due to this, I was rather informed the next day that the ordered cane was in fact not available, although it was still on their website with a higher price. I was then asked to choose from an alternative two canes available at the store, which could then be delivered. I agreed to one of them but was then informed the next day that the difference of the prices of the canes would not be discounted in my favor as a compensation for the fact I was delayed, denied my order after the misrepresentation on the website which suggested the cane was in stock and the further misinformation about the order having been processed and available and further I had also missed out on deals and delivery which I could have had from other sites and their cyber Monday offers had I not ordered from the Starkman's website, which I did in good faith. I also explained my insurance deadline to submit my claim and chose another two canes which were a dollar or two in price difference and offered the replacement tip and cane clip also on the order could have been adjusted against that difference and perhaps the clip and tip which were both a few dollars in cost could be complimentary for all this delay and these issues so as to allow me to have the initial order processed because of the time frame but the next day I was forwarded a link to the site claiming a weekend sale on canes which was also not true because the canes were still priced the same as the few days earlier. In any case to accommodate my need I chose two other canes but was then informed that those other two canes were also not available and when I asked for this matter to be forwarded to a manger, my order was abruptly cancelled! This is preposterous and a complete farce of business practice and while the company probably cannot be bothered with the general public and their business their misrepresentation, miscommunication and misinformation along with their lack of consideration and common courtesy especially considering they deal with people with medical issues is harassing to say the least and I would just like to put out my complaint for general information and would definitely not refer any of my clients, family or friends as I had intended after my experience and also warn others, so people intending to patronize this business would be aware of this fiasco. read more

I am posting because I was wary of all the bad reviews. I'm from out of town and was concerned about how I was going to be treated and if I would have to end up going somewhere else. I called first and they were very nice and put the item on hold for me (last one they had). I then went directly to the store and 3 ladies promptly helped me. The one in charge of helping me was really knowledgeable her name was Victoria. She made sure it fit properly and she absolutely answered all my questions. She also helped me to get the cane I needed showed me how to use it and she installed the ice walking thing on the end for me. I really have no complaints. I don't know why there are so many bad reviews but I'm very happy with the service I got and I although the items were a bit expensive they are no more expensive than back in the US. Also this is a HUGE store and they have a ton of things there and choices. Mostly stores like this are small and limited. Just horrible service by the manager. Explained to the associate that we came in looking for a walker with a seat back in August for my elderly father. They said they were sold out of the affordable one and that we could rent one without a seat for now until one comes in. Once it came in they would refund the rental and put it towards the walker with a seat. Not only did they not call for months, they did not refund the rentals when we said we wanted to purchase the walker with the seat. I am appalled by the way they treated us. Making us feel like we would lie about them calling up when one came in. My father barely used the walker since he needs to rest and it's easier to walk and sit with a cane then with a walker without a seat. It even still had the foam padding on it from shipment. Disgusting. Do not sign anything with this company. They will keep charging your elderly parents and they won't even know it. If you have signed an agreement I suggest you check our statements for their charges. read more

Customer service is pretty bad. I have no idea if it is the staff does not care or if they are dealing with antiquated systems and have just given up. I need a product that they must order. I have made three orders and it usually takes over 3 weeks to get in the store. When I order the product I am made to feel that this is such a huge problem for the clerk. I went to order the product on Sunday and I was told to call it in as the clerk could not find the product code, even when I gave her name and size. I was in disbelieve. I have ordered this same method for the last two times, with the same clerk one of those times. The product is only sold in two sizes. I was shaking my head thinking " how is this business been run". Going to a store should not be so frustrating. I should feel like this is a great place to meet my father's needs. I have calculated that in the last year I have spent over $1000 dollars here as we had some large items that were purchased earlier in the year. Going forward I can see that my purchases could be over $50 most months, however, after this last experience, I hope to avoid this place as much as possible. So yesterday I said enough, called the manufacturer and found a source where I can get the product delivered or I can pick it up in 3 days. Three days versus 3 weeks. Why does a business fail? Usually, they forget to be client centered and start to think they are doing the client a favour, then a competitor will take advantage of the great opportunity. I called the manager, and for some reason the manager is usually not in even on weekdays,, I . was told he would be there on Thursday. So now do I call him and give him some free advice on how to run his store, or perhaps I have already given them enough advice and now maybe I should set up my own store, as clearly there is a need that is not being met by this store's model of customer service..Too bad as they have been in the community for a long time.
