Amazing! Incredible! Phenomenal! Just tried this cute little shop because I was craving some pie and mash with liquor and let me tell you, I got in my car and it was gone! The thing that stole the show was the Traditional beef and onion pie. Actually one of the best things I've had. I would so recommend getting that pie. I also got the sticky toffee pudding and holy crap!You can taste all the spices they put into it and the cake underneath was moist. The man who was taking our order was also so nice. If you want the jellied eels, you typically have to pre-order them now. They come cold but you can heat them up. I prefer them heated but either way is fine. This isn't something I want to rush back for but it is nice to have the chance to appreciate an unusual to me British delicacy since it's not really feasible for me to move to Britain. I only knew about them because I thoroughly read their website! I am finally picking up that their crisp bag becomes an occasional special and always a winner. Of the ones I have casually run into, when they add duck sounds the most delectable to me (it is also the only crisp bag I actually had of theirs so far lol). It's hard to find this quality level of British food and novelties anywhere else that isn't the UK and Stargazy is it. Stargazy represents the best tastes of London at the doorstep of an intimate Passyunk building. The interior is small and cozy, so take advance care to share a table with neighbors or be mindful of new orders coming in and out. My partner and I were lucky enough to snag a table while we dined, but you can also order ahead for take-out. They also sell tons of British-inspired snacks and small bites for a la carte purchase in addition to their regular menu. Friday offers a Fish and Chips special, while Saturday provides a Traditional English Breakfast. Their Instagram is very active, so I recommend checking social media for updates on new offerings and events. The Food Breakdown: Fish and Chips (5/5) - I can't speak highly enough about how flavorful and savory each element was on the plate. It undoubtedly lives up to being the best in Philly! The seasoning on both the large-sized fish and fries were superb, and I was also surprisingly loving the mushy peas. Sausage Roll (4/5) - The bake on the pastry was fantastic and my sausage was delicious. The irony of this is that it would normally be the star, if it wasn't for the other two items just being even that much better. Sticky Toffee Pudding (5/5) - Absolutely delicious and a great finish to the meal. Having it served warm as opposed to taking it to go is the best way to enjoy each bite, where you can taste the brown sugar, cream, and love. When we visited, it was the peak Friday evening dinner rush. One note is to take care with the small space in dining with your neighbors or being more patient with the time that goes into preparing each dish. The place is small, but there are complimentary PG Tips tea and a few tables if you want to stick around and eat off proper plates. The spice bag was fried deliciousness: fried potatoes (chips), tender/juicy chunks of fried chicken, a few jalapeño slices, and fried onion strings tossed in paper sack with seasonings and served with a delicious curry sauce. It was everything I'd hoped it would be. I'm. Glad it's 3 miles away, because this is an indulgence I should not have often. Has only a few tables inside to sit at, but lots of take out orders. They also have a big snack rack with assortment of foods and other goods from Britain. As to the food, the roast was wonderful. It's a good thing Stargazy is in South Philly and I live in Manayunk - because if I lived closer, I would be here every day. What an absolutely wonderful establishment! The owner Sam is such a lovely human being as well! I love Stargazy's holiday dinner offerings so much that I did them both for Thanksgiving and Xmas last year. They offer smaller portions which is great for me because I'm typically on my own, so I do the 2-person offering. I love that they mix traditional with non-traditional, just boring old turkey is no fun. The cabbage with long hots was my favorite dish in the Thanksgiving dinner. For Xmas, it was my first time ever having Wellington and it. was. AWESOME. I've also had their sticky toffee pudding and millionaire bars and as someone that is not super into sweets, they were both divine. It took 15-20 minutes, and utensils are in the front left for you to grab yourself. In general, the workers were pretty friendly. The crispy fish was a generous portion and fries tasted good with the tartar sauce. Surprisingly, I liked the mushy peas the best since they added some freshness to the dish. The next day, when I heated up the potato masala pastry in my air fryer, it still tasted pretty good. The spices in the masala and the crispiness of the pastry was great! The Sunday Roast Beef was nostalgic, warm, and just a cool meal to eat. Reminds one of a slow family meal on a Sunday in the UK. That said, the roast was a bit tough and grissly in places. And the potatoes were a bit less cooked than I personally prefer. That said, the portion was quite generous. And the service was super friendly. I also got a bacon and apple tart. That was AWESOME. The place was tiny and guests may have to squeeze by people sitting down to get to the cashier. The vibes were more "cafe takeout with a few tables" than "sit and stay" full service restaurant/pub. They have a cool mini market offering British chocolates, candies, canned goods, and soft drinks, but did not have any beer or tea for takeout or dine in. Gutted if you're looking for a cuppa or pint. For food, I tried the Bedfordshire Clanger, a long pastry which is half savory and half sweet. The texture is like a nice flakey pie (yum!). The flavors change daily. I had the half lamb / half apple cranberry and thought it was ok, but not incredible. The Friday Fish & Chips were good with the fish being soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Overall, I rate this place 3/5, which is not meant to discourage anyone from trying it because I just prefer food with more spices and British food is meant to be plain and simple. Amazing British pastry/pie shop! My sister told me about this place and said it's the best savory pie she's had - and she's not wrong! We got the beef pie with mash and Bedfordshire clanger. Pie crust is so crispy - I would say it's baked to perfection. I wasn't a big fan of the sauce they used for the mash. I was hoping it would be creamy garlic herb or something but it was more of a light lemon/pickle vinaigrette taste. The clanger is so interesting - it's savory in the front (strawberry boar meat) and transitions to sweet at the other end (berry jam). I've never had it before and didn't know what to expect but I was especially happy about the strawberry boar sausage! It has such a unique taste - the tartness of the strawberry really brings out the taste of the sausage. The pies are kept warm in the oven so you usually don't have to wait long to get your order. They have a small indoor dining area but the food is packed nicely in a container that you can easily take your food to go! They don't have a restroom available for customers but they do have a random sink you can use to wash your hands. read more

We were intending to get the sausage roll, but they were already sold out of them! I was tempted to order the Sunday roast because it looked so good, but we were already so full from the other restaurants that all we could handle was the lamb and onion pie, and a potato masala pastry. Both of these were DELICIOUS! The pie was loaded with meat, with crispy pastry on top and cooked to perfection! The meat was super juicy and flavorful that I couldn't put this down! The potato masala pastry was apparently a hit, because they sold their last one to me and the lady behind me was looking for one. This was incredible! The spice from the masala was perfect: not too spicy to the point where it was uneditable, but absolutely perfect! It legit melted in your mouth because of how flavorful it was! The hours make it hard to swing by for breakfast during the week but it is the perfect place to grab a savory brunch on the weekends. Meat pies are amazing here. The puff pastries are nice and fluffy and buttery. The meat filling is generous and flavorfully spiced. My favorite is the beef and onion pie with mash (mashed potatoes) but hold the liquor. I am more of a traditional American gravy with mash guy, but unfortunately that is not an option here. The sausage rolls are also very good but I feel guilty eating these because it is literally just meat and pie. No veggies. I love the clangers, it is a sweet pie on one side and a savory pie on the other. I always start at the savory end and finish up with the sweet fruit pie end. A great start and finish to any meal. They have some true comfort food - from shepherds pie, to scotch eggs, to cans of tomato soup (that's right, I said cans - because they serve as a market too where you can get british snacks & groceries.) **Pro tip - we got their Heinz Creamy Tomato Soup - this paired so nicely with all of our pies.) While everything was good, the dishes that stood out the most were there: - Shepherds Pie: I don't care who has made this for you in the past or where your favorite is right now, if you live anywhere in south philly, this is worth trying. Hearty dish, cooked perfectly with crisp edges and warm & gooey inside. Each fork full was piled with mash, meat, and vegetables. - Their cheese & onion pastry was a great savory pastry to have with dinner. Kind of felt like a variant of an everything bagel, but as a croissant. - If there is one thing you have to get here for desserts, please try their Millionaire Shortbread. Definitely much more than your average meat/veggie pie. All the pies are freshly made here. At first glance, the diminutive stature is deceiving. It may not look satisfying but, oh it will be. Your first bite will include a fantastic crispy crust. There isn't much layering underneath, once you crack that crust, it will be all filling and gravy inside. All the fillings are on point. The mainstay Beef and Onion is delicious with an awesome gravy. If you are there on the day there is a special like the Chicken Tikka Marsala don't hesitate to grab it. Great chunks of tender spiced chicken, perfectly spiced. Don't forget to ask what's not listed, there may be venison or rabbit behind the curtain. Once you are done with these main entrees, if by chance there is a fresh fig dessert, you've got to say yes. I'm waiting anxiously for this to make a comeback. Now I've got to say, If I wrote this review a year ago, I'd say this would have been 1 star based on the numerous times I've made the trek only to find Stargazy closed before the listed closing time. This occurred on more than one occasion. There were a few other times when I've tried calling the number listed and the line was busy or off the hook. But given all these frustrating challenges (not even going to mention getting here later in the day and all the favorites gone), it seems like there is a renewed effort to keep the shop open at the listed business hours. Just stopped by last Sunday while browsing the car show nearby. This time, I got 2 unbaked pies to go. Service was meh (felt like I had to pull teeth to find out how long they recommend baking the pies, whereas the lady in front of me got friendly/enthusiastic/detailed instructions), but I only had to wait in line for about 5 minutes, which was a significantly shorter wait than my previous visit! I ended up baking the pies at 425F for about 20 mins, flipping them once, and they turned out nicely golden/crispy on both sides. The filing was as good as I remembered, and the pie was overall tasty. I love that they use real butter, giving the pie a nicely layered, delicious crust. They've also added more tables in the dining area since my last visit! I would be willing to try to dine in here again (but I'd still call ahead to check for wait times beforehand). read more

When my husband decided to treat me to the Friday fish and chips last week, I knew it would be great and I wasn't wrong. When he got home from the pick-up, we unpacked massive pieces of freshly fried cod, and plenty of thick cut fries. The mushy peas were perfect. Normally, I'm not a big tartare sauce girl, but Sam's version could make me a believer. Sam threw in some sticky toffee pudding, which was delicious. I'm a pretty impulsive person so I'm not one to preorder anything, I want what I want when I want it. I just couldn't wrap my head around preordering dinner but Thursday I decided I wanted fish and chips. Mid order I realized this was a preorder for Friday (mad face) but I was vested at this point. For a while I was on a once-a-week Stargazy lunch habit ever since the first time I stepped into the place. I had to stop because my metabolism isn't what it used to be, but it's still a staple in the lunch rotation. When I started coming, I was an omnivore, and the standard beef and onion pie was always outstanding, plus whatever rotating meat pies were on tap were delicious. I've been eating mostly vegetarian for the past 5 years, but there is always a veggie pie, plus cheese and onion pasties, and all of the desserts of course which keep me coming back. When the pandemic first hit and people were deciding where to spend their money to support their favorite local businesses, this was an easy top choice for me. And the parsely-based liquor and mash is a must-order. The punch of herbal tangy goodness adds so much to the dishes. Get the scotch egg. That's all I need to say. Stargazy has a constantly changing seasonal menu of pies and there is always at least one veggie option that is just as fun and delicious as it's meaty counterpoints. These pies will comfort you on a cold day, heal your hangovers, and improve your life. Get a banoffee tart too. It's worth it. The owner, Sam, is also a delight.
