Starbucks at 1515 York was a real experience in Covid challenge. Not only did they ask for proof of vaccine but also for a New York identification card too. They want to make sure the person vaccinated is you! I did all this for a Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin that set me back $3.65! This is a super busy location. Service was fast but the place has too many customers everywhere. I was lucky to get a table. The muffin was delicious but I doubt I'll return to this location. Four Stars anyway because my reason for me not returning isn't really because of anything they did wrong. They're super popular in this neighborhood! I love Starbucks, yet was extremely saddened when my daughter went to this Starbucks location last week with her friends from school because they were having a special "Buy One & Get One Free" before 6:00PM. She was waiting last in line with her friends, as they had all arrived prior to the 6PM cutoff for the drink special. When my daughter went to place her order, it was 6:06PM and both the customer service representative and manager denied her service. I think it is important to note that all of the other children were white-Americans and my daughter was the only Asian-American in there group. Depressing, bare bones location at 81st and York Avenue. It never was warm and cheery, but now -- OMG, it has a bare look like an empty dance floor. This Starbucks is almost hidden away like a little secret location. Of the few times I have been here at night it never seems too crowded, and they have some nice outside seating on the sidewalk out front during nice weather. Not the normal crowd you normally see at other Starbucks across the city but more of an older aunt/uncle/grandma crowd as can be expected living along York Ave along with some mom's & baby carriages thrown in. When I dropped in here last night it was kind of empty except for a few old timers chatting away over coffee. As far as a Starbucks goes they are pretty much all the same. I absolutely hate the staff(Spanish chicks with anger issues). Before the staff was so nice. I dont know if its just the day/different shift but this isn't okay. They're throwing things around very loudly "cleaning". When i arrived with a friend to study, the "bar" area was filthy dirty with garbage on the floor. I had an issue at the cashier. Im a gold member and had 2 stars until a free food/drink. I had a gift card with me too. I asked if i could pay with the gift card and still get points and was told that it is possible. The cashier took 5 minutes to put the order (small ice coffee and small hot black tea). Swiped my gift card and said i could proceed to the next area to get my coffee. I asked if i got my points and she said "no i asked u what u wanna do and u said u wanna swipe the card". I dont understand why she said "i asked u what u wanna do first." I know. Just what Yelp needs is another review of another Starbucks. But you don't understand! This Starbucks isn't like the others! This is Friendly Starbucks. In this Starbucks, the employees are nice! They're nice and they get your order right and they're fast! You never hear "Recall? Recall? WHAT?" You never get icky skim when you ordered delicious whole. And you never get sneers and jeers and "ugh, can I help you?" What you DO get are employees who hum to themselves while they barista. Barist? Whatever. You get smiles and greetings and "have a nice day"s. You get workers who tease each other playfully and let you in on the joke. I get into conversations with these people all the time. They've told me "Oh, don't order [hot seasonal beverage], it's gross, try it iced." One girl sang me a song! I love it here. It's even a quiet relaxing place to sit sometimes. Even the oddball "nice, attractive" employee from Aloof Starbucks by my subway stop (possible future review) was transferred to this store, and I was so happy to see him there! This store has gotten worse and worse over time. Here is a tip for coffee drinkers: the coffee urns' red light glows until an hour after brewing, then the red light starts blinking. It used to be that after an hour Starbucks coffee must be dumped and fresh coffee brewed but a year or two ago Starbucks changed their rule to 30-minutes. (But the urn timers are still hard-coded for an hour.) So WHY DO I GO THERE IN THE AFTERNOON OR EVENING AND SEE BLINKING LIGHTS? This is the slow time of the day for sales and the employees are too lazy to brew fresh coffee. Even worse, a couple of times I've witnessed a barista lifting the urns momentarily out of their seating and slotting them back in, which resets the timer and makes the lights glow solid-red again. Went here on a chilly Saturday to get my double tall skim salted caramel mocha. The staff actually...get this...smiles at customers! They even joke with them too! I had to almost pinch myself. Most other Starbucks in the city (and in case you haven't noticed, there are a gazillion of them) have staff with minimal to no enthusiasm. My coffee tasted great. They ran out of whipped cream, and instead of making the customer wait and wonder what was going on, the barista communicated options to the customer: wait 2 minutes for it to be made, or take the drink without it. Communication is KEY to ensuring a good customer experience. She let the consumer control the additional waiting time based on his or her priorities. Now that's a winning barista! This place also has ample seating, which I like. There was a time over the summer where I didn't have internet (thanks Time Warner) and I had to work from home. My job requires an internet connection, so this Starbucks saved my day! Just be mindful that, as a public place, you could have some crazies sitting next to you spouting out nonsense. This is a GREAT starbucks. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and the baristas are engaging and friendly. It's amazing how one place can be so different than the next with this franchise. It all comes down to the manager I guess. The Cafe Americanos were so good, I went back for a second round, and told the baristas how much I enjoyed them. When I rate places, I compare apples to apples, so this 5 star rating is comparing it to other coffee shops in the area, and specifically other Starbucks. Great job! read more

i always consider starbucks my once or twice a month stop for a visit type of place , and this morning. this upper east side york ave spot will make my quota today. a big place with outdoor seating as well as indoor and alot of room to relax, its another hidden place that occupys york ave. when i walked in place was not crowded and i put my claim on a rear corner table. now if folks think that business owners and managers dont read yelp reviews about their business, then i have a bridge to sell to you( they do). the place was clean and when i walked in was greeted with good morning by the two dudes behind the counter, while glazing at the display counters and those yummy treats. muffins,scones,pound cake,cookies, bagels, small sandwiches, salads, etc. the aroma of the coffee was strong, and my decaff cappy was made just right. hot and cold coffee, teas, specialty drinks and more. the free wifi seems to make folks linger longer, but ample seating, gives all enough room to slack. i will be back in summer time to grab a seat outside and enjoy my ice mocha while looking at the lovely ladies walk by. read more
