It's in quite an unassuming location but still only a short bus or car journey from the city centre. And judging from the packed bus I was on, this is a heavily populated area of Manchester as well. The decor is slick and clean but still welcoming. By sharing with Jess H and getting half and half I was able to sample a large selection of the pizzas on offer, including Ciccia (sausage, pepperoni, nduja - basically a fancy meat feast), Fourfour (mozzarella, gorgonzola, fontina, parmesan), Polla (grilled chicken, peppers, mushrooms) and a special that I can't remember the name of that had bacon, potato, rosemary, provolone. Potato on pizza is something I can wholeheartedly endorse, let me tell you. However all were delicious and in particular I would order the Ciccia again. I don't usually opt for very meaty pizzas and also sometimes find nduja to be excessively spicy, but this all came together quite perfectly. I was also given some fresh pasta and sauce to take home which was SO delicious. I often think of pasta as a fairly boring/standard option, something I will opt for when getting home late from the gym, and not something I will often choose at Italian restaurants. However this pasta made me remember how good pasta can be- I ate it simply with the tomato sauce provided and some mozzarella thrown in, and loved it. Although I didn't pay for what I had the prices are extremely reasonable (see my pics for the pizza menu, and you can find their pasta menu online). Residents of Harpurhey and nearby areas, you need to get yourself here - pronto!

There is only a small selection of carefully chosen combinations, all with freshly made pasta, split into meat and vegetable options. I opted for the Genova - fusili pasta, green pesto, and toasted pine nuts topped with parmesan. Everything is made behind the counter so you can see it being tossed and mixed throughout the process. For £4.50 (going up to around £5 with meat) you get a decent lunch portion of fresh and fairly healthy feeling pasta. What's not to love? If you're not a pasta fan they also have pizza and some toasted flatbreads available, plus pastries and muffins in the morning. There's also a selection of homemade desserts - tiramisu, of course - and a range of drinks in the cooler which is worth browsing.

I asked for a cold Vietnamese coffee (not sure if they didn't hear) but got a hot one instead. I didn't mind it as the weather was being indecisive that day anyway and would be too cold to be holding my cold drink outside. The coffee itself was pretty good considering I haven't had decent coffee in awhile. It wasn't overly sweet either which was what I was worried about at first. I'll try to come back and try their food next time.

I like the decor. It's perfect to catch up with friends or coworkers, and it would be also be an enjoyable co-working space. We saw plenty of people toiling away on their laptops. Unfortunately, one little gripe though, all of the booths only had one person, camped out with their laptop, so those people should be more mindful to take a smaller table if they're going to work for several hours. I like the various seating options including big tables, small tables, comfy sofa chairs, and counter seating. The menu offers lots of options too including chai lattes which seem less common in the UK, so that was a nice surprise. Overall, it's a cool spot. I'd come again.

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

Each time I visit I am taken back to a time when high tea was not only expected but proper. The scones are absolutely to die for! Freshly made, onsite. The sandwiches, teas, and bubbly are always spot on. Service is just what you would expect. Proper and welcoming. But now to the rest a teatime should be sacred time with loved once an hour to relax calm down and enjoy good tea and food. We had the queens tea and it comes as a full high tea with scones, sandwiches and sweets. While the service - as already mentioned was great (they switched one set to vegetarian sandwiches) - the sandwiches have not been. The toast was a bit try on the edges and the actual spread and creations have been lackluster to be friendly. The chickpea vegetarian was the best by far. The scones clearly made in house fresh and really good tasting. But they have been more like a bead bun in consistency- but together with the clotted cream very very good. Just not really scones. This tea room also did disappointed me with just serving a tiny glass of industrial made strawberry preserves. They also only serve one "scone" per person and did not offered any more sandwiches or scones. And then finally the "sweets" the Richmond tea room takes that word very very literal. Besides a macaron and a little passionfruit tartlet they served two pieces of cake that have both been tasting like sugar only. While looking ok they just had no taste whatsoever other than just being overly sweet. No fruit flavor or distinctive taste. Since I left mine untouched since they were just not good maybe that why they don't offered more sandwiches or scones. All in all it was just not the teatime I was looking for spending with my husband as quality time we slowed down drinking the tea but we did not really enjoyed the food and that messed up the experience. Sadly. Starting with five stars I'll take one of for the stall sandwiches, another one for uninspired sweets and a third for the jam and overall price / quality relations. Since I would have lived with it when it would have been a cheap teatime in a restaurant, but it's a location that ha w tea room even in the name.

I was adamant that given the compact-wooden-pod nature of the place, I should only go in extreme weather conditions in order to make the trip all the more exciting. In beloved but rainy Manchester, blue-skies and sunshine qualifies as extreme conditions. As such, during a sunny June Sunday, I seized the opportunity to sip on a 'Grindsmith' flat white, with sunshine beaming through the open façade (almost entirely made of glass) - I was not disappointed. An excellent decision on my part to go when sunny and excellent brewing skills from Grindsmith as far as kick-ass flat white's are concerned. Grindsmith offers little when it comes to food, there was a very small selection of baked goods but they looked rustic and appealing. I wasn't expecting an extensive food menu, nor was I disappointed by its lack. What is pretty darn cool however, is that Grindsmith stock 'Ginger's Comfort Emporium' ice-cream - absolutely the best ice-cream I have ever tasted! (See my review of the cafe in Affleks palace) Marry this with a Grindsmith espresso and you've got an Affogato sent directly from heaven. £3 well spent I'd say - a delightful weekend treat. Take a walk to Greengate Square. Look, I know the Premiere Inn there is really ugly and a bit of an off-putter, but once inside Grindsmith's coffee haven, you'll forget such an architectural disaster ever happened.
