Uncommon Grounds had all the makings of a fine sit n' sip: high ceilings, superfluous interior arches, mildly darkened aesthetic, tin ceiling tiles, and an abundance of screamin' local artistry dressing up the joint. Brothers and sisters... I was stoked about the possibility of churning out some real Aldi-grade literature at one of the chunky timber perches. I was ready for a slammin cup of joe and a sick-ish vibe. Alas, all I got from behind the counter was a jersey stuffed with caustic disdain and affected arrogance. It was impressive in that the tone, delivery, volume and words were all brilliantly matched in conveying unmistakable I-wish-you'd-get-the-flip-outta-my-space-clappery. I know the exact phrasing and such would go a long way here, but the whole dang affected setup I received from the other side of the counter would be hella exhausting to recount. And not worth my time. To be clear, my time really ain't worth all that much. Now I could go on to tell you about the rest of the experience, the quality of the bagels and the consistency of the schmear, and the tones you'll find playing throughout the house-roasted brews. But as a journeyman writer in the café world, I'm not gonna waste any more descriptors on the brat-infused tea steeping at the front of house. Why? Simply because cafés are more than the drink and grub. Cafés are as solid an offering of what culture Earth has to offer across its varied continents, countries, and street corners. They are something to engage with and experience directly. Like riding a scooter across Vietnam. Like a Moroccan food market. Like wiping volcanic ash off your hiking boots after a day's hike in Cinder Cone. If the human engagement of the place is reprehensible, then in IMHO the treats and steeps don't matter. Disappointments happen. That's for sure. But I'm only gonna spend two more sentences telling you what you probably already gathered about this place. It's slippin' baby. It's slippin'.

Decided to try their BLT and had a hot tea. Please expect to not receive your loose tea rinds as they steep it there for you. This adds time and will not allow for a second hot water fill. For a $5.00 tea, I do wish they allowed us to have the rind as mine was watered down. The barista added hot water as the tea steeper didn't fill up for the 20 oz. It was noticeable in taste. The sandwich was delicious and I look forward to seeing additional options with more protein in the future! What is nice is they have televisions as the menus, so it will be an easy addition as they update and grow their menu. All in all, I will definitely return. Look forward to seeing the updates to their business model as they grow. Current hours for the kitchen are 7 am to 2 pm and the coffee and tea portion is open until 3 pm. My one minor gripe with the service is that on both occasions we've been, there's been confusion about who owns what drink when it's called out. Coffee: Their drinks with syrups (I've tried the dirty chai, maple cardamom, and cinnamon bun) all tend to lean on the sweeter side, and it's hit or miss as to whether the other flavors come through - especially the maple cardamom. We didn't get either flavor. Next time, I'll stick to a standard coffee and milk drink. Baked Goods: Scones - a must-get! We tried the orange cranberry, and both agreed that it was unusually and exceptionally good - certainly the best I'd ever had. Plus, they're enormous, so plan to split or have leftovers. Cinnamon roll - skip. The scarcity marketing of it being a Saturday-only special got to me, but I wouldn't order it again. For me, it was way too sweet, both in terms of the icing (buttercream, no cream cheese) and the very generous filling, and the texture wasn't my favorite: standard dry-ish & bready. Tangzhong would be a welcome addition. Bagels - fantastic. These are very different to the bagels at Uncommon Grounds, which are more dense and chewy. If you prefer a lighter, airier bagel with a substantial crisp on the outside, you'll love these. They don't have too many varieties yet (I think just everything, cinnamon raisin, and plain), but even the plain is excellent. Love that they do an over-easy egg on the breakfast sandwiches.
