Instead of going for the Old Fashioned Breakfast, I went for the Bastard Benedict, which happened to be two poached eggs smothered in Hollandaise sauce on a sourdough English muffin, with their house salad & a hashbrown. Along with it I had smoked salmon. The mistake I made was that we were there for only a couple of days and by first ordering the Bastard Benedict, there was no way in the world I was going to try anything else in this shortened time. The Bastard Benedict was one of the most memorable food experiences I've ever had. Had I been able to stay longer I would have tried everything on the menu. If the Bastard Coffee House was in Toronto, there'd be line-ups to get in full-time.

Later on, we heard they had run out of eggs. Although it is an interesting place, with an eclectic menu, and it's not next door for us, I would not be in a hurry to go back. That said, the pastry itself was fresh and tasty, and the raisins were more of a personal preference issue than a problem with the food. My wife ordered an iced chai latte and absolutely loved it. She often finds chai lattes to be watered down, but she said this one was perfectly sweet, full of flavor, and one of the better ones she's had. You may have trouble finishing. As many businesses have struggled during COVID times, these folks have as well, but they are not giving up. Please support this family owned and operated business and keep your hard earned money local rather than supporting large chains who are often owned internationally. Also, they have some challenges with adjacent businesses inappropriately taking over the parking stalls directly in front of Cafe le Matin.
