Privately owned initially,…read moreBigelow Tea purchased it in 2003 to provide the plantation with the financial security to continue business indefinitely. Although Bigelow owns it, none of the tea grown here is used in other Bigelow teas and it remains an independent producer of Charleston Teas. I had no idea how tea was grown or turned into tea bags, but after a wonderful Trolley Tour of the plantation and the factory tour, I now feel very well versed in the process! This is a working farm, so the grounds are not manicured for visual aesthetics. Still, it is fun to see. Added recently is a special breed of sheep that they use to "weed" the tea fields. These sheep apparently love the taste of weeds and hate the taste of tea plants, so it's a nice synergy. The tour guide was delightful and extremely informative. They have a nice-sized gift shop, and the staff is very friendly. There are also samples of each type of tea, hot and cold, that are free and plentiful. Even though I'm more of a coffee drinker and rarely drink tea, I thoroughly enjoyed spending a few hours learning about the process and tasting the final product. If you're ever close by, I highly recommend you stop by!

This trolly style tour was just of the fields and greenhouse. There is no AC on the trolly so be aware if you are going in the hot summer months. The tour lasted about 45 min or so. They have a detailed history of how the tea farm came to be and how they grow the tea. Very informative and interesting. If you like learning about history you will enjoy it.

However, the week before Easter was definitely a busy one for this store, and they were cleaned out of a lot of their typical offerings. For example, their take-and-bake pizzas are an easy and decent dinner after a day at the beach, but to our surprise, there were none left when we stopped in around 5 PM on a Wednesday. I'm confident that this not a regular occurrence - but something to note if you're visiting during the busy season. I will echo other reviewers that mentioned narrow aisles and an interesting layout. This store is definitely on the smaller side, and can feel crowded when there's multiple people in one aisle. One way to avoid this is shopping outside of peak hours ... early in the morning our later at night. The cashiers are mostly friendly and always fast. If you come from a state with Kroger or Fry's instead of Harris Teeter, rest assured that you can still input your phone number for your shopper rewards. Another positive is that I haven't noticed a difference in prices from this store and non-touristy grocery stores. Again, it does the trick for being the only grocery store at Freshfields. However, it could certainly use a little love and a few updates.

We ordered at the counter and chose to set at their bar. The restaurant is clean and quaint. It seems like a very versatile space, and a place that you could enjoy breakfast lunch or a dinner. They also seem to offer a nice selection of desserts. The quiche Lorraine was very tasty. It was very light and flavorful. I would definitely come here again when I am in the area.
