We just stumbled into Bakehouse in Charleston and were pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere felt welcoming right away. My husband and I only grabbed coffee, but it was very good. The coffee was smooth and flavorful, and I love when places take the extra step to decorate the top of a latte -- even when it's in a to-go cup. It's such a small detail, but it makes it feel special. The pastries and baked goods looked delicious, but we weren't hungry enough to try anything this time. We'll definitely have to go back for that. The only downside was that the interior could use some updating. The booth seats were torn and ripped, and when I see that, I can't help but wonder what else might not be fully maintained. A refresh would really elevate the overall experience. There is one small chair outside where you can sit with your pup, which is a nice little touch. Overall, great coffee and friendly service -- worth stopping in! read more

I like this homey place. It's got a coffeehouse vibe, with old comfy chairs and a bohemian library look. It's all self service, paper and plastic, but the staff are very friendly and accommodating. I came here to work for a few hours and liked that they have a separate room for people with laptops. The coffee was good, but the WiFi was terrible and wasn't working at all, making it impossible to get any work done. The room also didn't have AC, only a fan, which wasn't enough to keep it comfortable. I ended up leaving after about 30 minutes. Bakehouse is hands down our favorite coffee shop in Charleston. Honestly, it might be the best spot downtown. The location is perfect; easy walk to the Battery, shops, and all the historic neighborhoods. We get coffee here every single weekend and it never misses. The coffee is amazing, the pastries and food are so good, and the staff is always genuinely kind and welcoming. There's one staff member in particular who might be my favorite service worker ever, he truly cares about what he's serving and always checks in to make sure everything tastes right. There's plenty of seating too, including outdoor chairs when the weather's nice, which makes it an easy place to hang out for a bit. There's also indoor booths, tables and a little library room. The staff was friendly, but I found that the process for getting drinks to the customer was inefficient, as I had to wait for the entire group in front of me to get their drinks made before I could even order; we were the only customers there and there were several workers, so one person could've taken my order and then helped make drinks afterwards if needed. We wandered into Bakehouse Charleston on a recent trip to the city, and I do not recommend it. At first blush, the decor is charming, but once we had our order, it was hard to find a clean table where the seats weren't shredded. We ate among the crumbs of a previous guest. For $33.01, we had a small slice of quiche, a small cappuccino, an iced chai latte, and a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. The quiche was ok, and the cappuccino was delicious. The chai latte was from syrup, not brewed, and the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit was not good. The egg was ok, but the bread part was more roll vs. biscuit. The one slice of bacon tasted like the kind of bacon one buys precooked to microwave a few seconds to heat on a busy morning. It was disappointing to get a biscuit that cost $7.65 that was worse than a quick stop McDonald's. We've cooked and eaten many frozen Mary B's biscuits that were of a much higher quality. If you just want a coffee to go, Bakehouse Charleston is a fine choice. We found this cute little cafe open late by accident! Storms rolled in out of nowhere and we needed to take cover. My brother in law was sad that they ran out of lemonade but they were able to make an iced black tea with raspberry instead. Small but with a few seating options, inside and out. Both times, I got the s'mores bar, it's good, doesn't rock my world, but satisfying. I'd like to try the key lime bar next time. EDIT: There have been some notable changes over the past year. It's not clear if management has changed, but the place isn't quite what it used to be. Food is okay, coffee is pretty good but with employee turnover changing all the time, it doesn't seem like anyone is quite grasping what they used to be. Not to mention I've noticed cockroaches on the front counter and the wall behind it at the last two times I've been there. As good as it used to be, I can't stomach going back. Original: I genuinely don't think I've ever had a bad experience here, and I go all the time since I work nearby. I've tried iced teas, lemonades, hot & iced coffee, different lattes like the Cinnamon Bun and Spicy Mocha, and even had a spiked smoothie at one point. Also solid on the flavors, never tastes watered down or lacking of anything. There was a notable change in the way the key lime was made, but the desserts are always tasty (my personal fave is the coconut macaroons) and the bacon & cheese quiche is always a good choice for a quick lunch. Four of us were vacationing in Charleston, SC, about three weeks ago. We stopped here after walking around Charleston in the hot sun for about 5 hours so that we could use the restroom, get something to snack on, and, most importantly, get something to drink. There's enough room in Bakehouse for one large group and three smaller groups of 4 people to sit at their tables. Employees wore face masks, and there was a piece of paper inside the business that stated face masks were required, but it sure wasn't enforced since the employees provided customer service to everyone who placed an order regardless of their face covering status. The restaurant wasn't clean; the employees expected, as indicated by a sign on the door that requested all customers bus their tables, the customers to clean up after themselves. It's just that the employees didn't follow up with actually wiping down the tables and throwing away all trash left behind. The result was that there were discarded napkins on the floor, the floor looked like it hadn't been swept that day, and crumbs and bits of food and moisture from drinks remained on the tables. the employees were nice. We ordered an Italian prosciutto and mozzarella panini for all of us to share, a slice of key lime pie for two of them to share, and four drinks, mine of which was a lavender green tea. I found out real quick by watching the employees behind the counter that the food that is sold was pre-made and put into the refrigerated glass display case for customers to see. The employee just removed the slice of key lime pie and served it. However, we had asked the employee to cut the panini into four pieces. He took the pre-made panini out of the display case, heated it up in the microwave, cut it into four pieces and served it. I just wish it was a fresh sandwich. I didn't taste the key lime pie, but those who ate it said that it was good. The panini was just OK in flavor. I thought the panini was very overpriced for the quality and the amount of food we received. The drinks were good. Overall, this place was OK. read more

I love this place as drinks, but lately some of the pastries have left me wanting while some of them have a lot of love built into them. Some of them seem to just be prepackaged off of a big cookie sheet.
