Unfortunately, my recent visit to the Potomac Valley Shopping Center location in Gaithersburg, MD (on 08/09/2025 at 8:22 AM EST) has made me question that loyalty. After placing and paying for my usual order, the store manager (name beginning with "J") interrupted the barista mid-preparation to inform me I would now be charged extra for the espresso shots in my drink. She stated that "no such drink exists" and claimed other stores -- including this one, which I frequent -- had been preparing it incorrectly for years. Despite calmly explaining my ordering history, the manager was dismissive, argumentative, and unwilling to listen. She did not offer an apology when I requested and received a refund, and later approached me again, insinuating I had been rude. She then insisted on reviewing my Starbucks app history to verify past charges, which clearly showed I had never been charged extra for this drink. The conversation continued to be confrontational, so I chose to end it and leave. When my family's drinks were ready, the barista who originally took my order apologized directly to them for the situation -- a courtesy I never received from the manager. As a former manager of a large-scale company, I found multiple areas where this interaction fell short of acceptable customer service standards: Once a drink has been ordered and paid for, staff should not intervene in a way that disrupts the transaction without a critical reason. It is unprofessional for a manager to debate with a customer in full view of other patrons. Managers should prioritize empathy, active listening, and resolution -- none of which were displayed in this encounter. For contrast, on 08/10/2025, I visited the Kentlands Starbucks, where my drink was made exactly as ordered -- without hesitation, extra charge, or issue. The barista there confirmed, "three shots, of course," and provided exceptional service. This demonstrates the inconsistency between store practices and the significant impact leadership has on customer experience. I hope Starbucks will review this feedback seriously and consider additional customer service and leadership training for store management. Potomac Valley Starbucks always has friendly and comfortable seating/atmosphere. Also, the baristas always have the best customer service especially the barista, Kaylie. She's always so friendly and cares that your order is correct. She really goes above and beyond. I was rushing to work very early in the morning yesterday and she not only had my mobile order ready and perfect, but handed me my drink and food. Thank you. I'm generally not a huge Starbucks fan, it strikes me as over-roasted and priced coffee. However, the little vanilla bean scones are worth the trip. (The 1 star is really for the scones.) Coffee was, as usual, nice and hot but burnt and bitter. I ordered extra room for cream and she asked me if I wanted the cream or just the space. Ok, odd question until she told me they keep the cream amd sweeteners behind the counter now. I asked if that was a COVID thing or was going to be permanent and she said it was permanent. So I said please put the cream in. She didn't ask what type and I dontnknow of I got 1% or half and half although I bet 1% because of the taste. Deleting the app as soon as I spend what's left on it and back to McDonald's where at least I can stir in what I want and get it to taste the way I want it. read more

Do not try to order hot tea at this location!!! I've never seen anything so ridiculous. It was almost comical if I hadn't been craving a simple cup of basic hot tea. The young girl behind the counter was completely confused when I asked what hot teas she had. She said they didn't offer it. I told her of course they did and she challenged me rudely to find it on the menu. She then told me they had never trained her how to make hot tea. I explained it's very simple. Cup of hot water, drop tea bag in, cover with lid. She persisted that if she did that wrong, she'd get in trouble. She refused to try. In reality they probably figured who actually needs direction on how to make a plain cup of hot tea???? She refused to try and to sell me a cup. I was sent off. Unbelievable! The Starbucks is nice and roomy inside. There's no drive-through but who needs that when you're getting coffee, right? My favorite barista, Brian, has been there for a long time and I'm pleased to see that he has moved up to a shift supervisor position. Starbucks is a great company and they treat their employees well. Brian always has a smile and a quick joke to give me that extra little pep in my step, besides the drink I ordered. LOL. To start with, this Starbucks is busy. It has its slow moments but in general there are times when they are moving. The past two visits they have either messed up my order or I've had to wait over 15 to 20 minutes for simply a drink. I'm not sure who is in charge, but whoever is in charge has not figured out a good system. I've been to many, many Starbucks that are very busy and they are moving and shouting and yelling and talking and having fun. This Starbucks no one talks and they all seem nervous or overwhelmed. It is too bad because it has not always been this way. And this is my local Starbucks which makes me sad. So, I hope they get their act together because right now they're a mess. read more

Terrible service. I was the only one in the store and there were 5 employees behind the counter. They seemed to be having great time chatting. One person took my order and then nothing happened except they carried on with their conversation. Then when they were finished another one put my spinach wrap in the oven. When it was done she was involved in another conversation and stood behind the counter with my sandwich in her hand, her back to me, carrying on the conversation until her coworker called out to her because she saw me waiting there in front of her. Every time I have been at this Starbucks way way far away from the District, I have been pleased with the celerity, the friendliness and the cleanliness. The staff here seem to be happy, rather than grumpy... as in many Starbucks stores. Parking is pretty easy, there is usually an open table, and the tall ceilings make it feel like a larger space. I ordered my tall iced coconut milk mocha macchiato, and I proceed to the hand off plane to watch Emily make my drink. She starts to stir the white mocha and the coconut milk (which you're not supposed to do) with a DAIRY SPOON! The whole point of the drink is to taste the coconut milk which is why the white mocha is not mixed, to supposed to be a layered drink. So every sip you take you get a little bit of everything. I then tell her to restart my drink the proper way and Emily (the girl on bar) gives me an attitude and then DECAFS my drink. Not only did Emily not follow proper food safety standards, she also didn't follow proper drink routine, and drink standards. I'm a very disappointed customer, I never once gave her an attitude. I love this location over all other Starbucks in the area. Environment is nice and friendly. I always feel welcomed. No long waits while associates laugh and joke. They are very efficient. I have to recognize Gabby for super customer service. I have been only going to this location for about 3 weeks and she already knows my name. The service at the Potomac Valley Starbucks location is good. Major disadvantages to Starbucks include lack of free Wi-Fi (wireless internet) and lack of free refills for regular coffee, which are both provided by most of their competitors. However, I like Starbucks simply because I like their quality coffee, which is usually consistent throughout the chain locations. read more

This is the worst Starbucks I've been in anywhere in the country. They are often out of items, and they make no effort to accommodate. I recently ordered a grande latte, and they said they couldn't make one because they were out of lids. I asked them to make me a grande latte and put it in a venti cup. They said they couldn't do that. One of the employees has been specifically rude to me (if she worked for me I would fire her on the spot). They also have long lines and slow workers, especially on weekend mornings. They definitely need a new manager. read more
