She spoke with an employee who expressly stated that they hire high school students and encouraged her to apply if interested. She applied to Starbucks on Wednesday and called the store after school on Thursday around 2:35 to speak to the manager Hannah, but she was told Hannah was not in. On Friday my kid received an email stating she was not considered for the position. She expressed to me that she wanted to cry and I gave a quick lesson on rejection and protection. I called the store out of curiosity because my coffee loving, honor roll, IT geek of a kid applied for a position that requires no experience. I called the store and asked to speak with the manager Hannah. Yay, Hannah is at the store today! I introduced myself and told Hannah what happened. I told her Haley initially wanted to apply in the store so she could meet them and they'd have a face with the application. Hannah then states all applications are online and she can't be what they were looking for. She went on to say she needs to be available, meet certain criteria, and have work experience. I told Hannah the position didn't require experience and she agreed to the number of hours listed. I then asked Hannah a few questions. My questions to Hannah were: 1) Do you hire high school students? 2) Does she have to have a certain level of work experience to work there? 3) Can you give any pointers on what she can do going forward to ensure she has a shot at working for Starbucks in the future? Her response was "yes we hire high school students and I can't tell you anything about her application because we treat them like they are adults. Is there anything else I can help you with because I don't have time for this"! I am shocked by this because I've never had a bad experience at ANY Starbucks locations EVER. The individual with the large hair that took my order and fulfilled it at the drive-thru window thought it fit to berate me at the window to ensure that I knew lattes can be ordered iced or hot because I failed to understand why I had to tell them the latte I ordered was hot. Lattes are hot beverages. Sure, you can order them iced, but I did not. The point is they were rude. Instead of explaining in a friendly I-appreciate-your-business sort of way, this individual tried to make me feel stupid. And after her lecture, also did not provide me with a receipt and ignored my attempt to ask for one at the window forcing me to park and enter the store to ask for one that another employee had to print a duplicate of while the original employee walked away and left to the back room. Nice. The overreach of kindness and hospitality comes from the establishment's end to be helpful and explain any misunderstanding. That's part of their job. As I entered the store, the lady at the front with the long ponytail was very nice and friendly and smiled when she greeted me.
