When I walked in around 6 on a Saturday, there were a few other customers but I only waited a few minutes. Unlike most other Asian hair salons, Star takes card as well as cash. I was greeted immediately and since I spoke in English only at first, they also replied in short English. I would say that's due to limited English, not impoliteness. However when I replied in Mandarin and Cantonese to my hairdresser (I forget her name, sorry), she immediately became a lot more outgoing and we held a conversation fairly well. I showed her a reference picture of what I wanted, and while she was cutting my hair into long layers she kept clucking over how dry my hair is (because I bleach and color it myself), but also told me she really liked the color. It felt like I was talking to one of my Chinese aunties, which made for a comfortable atmosphere. Basically, with the help of a picture and my limited Chinese, we got along fine. Throughout the cut, she kept showing me the back of my head with a mirror to make sure I was happy with the shape of the layers and the length, which was considerate. I got a friendly, direct vibe from this place. Obviously, everyone there speaks mostly Chinese so I would probably not recommend this place to anyone who can't, because of limited communication which can lead to bigger hair troubles. All in all, this place was a bit cleaner and nicer than most Asian hair salons, and $25 for women's hair (before tip) was a good deal for me. read more

We usually come to Star Salon so long as Becky is available. This is not to say the owner or others are not good. If you are looking for someone who does exactly what you wish, Becky is the one. She is quite good in Bob Layer Cuts. She is attentive and perhaps her style is more up-to-date. All my teenage boys love Becky and they refuse to have others touch their hair. She is also good with young children. Becky gave my nephew a hair cut for the first time and he looked great although at different location. Yes, she has moved unfortunately. Yet, I don't mind follow Becky at another location. It is hard to find a good hair dresser nowadays. I've never tried my hair with the owner or others. Appearance speaks and reveals a hair dresser's style. So I picked Becky and never regretted. Of course, don't judge the book by the cover. Yet, when it comes to style and hair, I won't risk it. I only write honest reviews, and always 4 star-5 star reviews, but I just cannot do that with this place. These people who work here only know how to work with naturally straight hair. If you don't have straight hair, if its curly or wavy, they then tell you that its frizzy and you should get permanent straightening. I came here to get my hair done, not to hear your opinion. I came here only once to this place because the salon I go to in Ohlone Village was closed Sunday. Star Salon charged $45 dollars for shampoo and straightening when the place I usually go to only charges $25 and gets the job done in 45 minutes. These people two 1.5 hours because I was waiting so long... even after I made an appointment! I had another appointment for eyebrows at 12:00 but had to move it to 12:30 because they took so long. They also don't know obvious hair tricks like curling hair using a straightener, which is the fastest way to curl my kind of hair. Many people know this, and it can be easily learned by watching a youtube video. One doesn't even have to go to beauty school to learn it. It makes me question where they have gotten their certificates from. One more thing is I really wanted to curl my hair, but she insisted that I straighten it. I'm sure its because it would be the fastest and easiest for them to do. Anyways, I believe I would have enjoyed this place if I had straight hair. I came here to get another haircut, however Becky was not working that day because she was on vacation. So Michelle cut my hair. Michelle is also very nice, and listened to what I had to say. She did not take 3 inches off my hair when I said a trim. I really like my cut and it was exactly what I was asking for. Just a trim to make sure my layers still looked good. If I come again I will ask for either Michelle or Becky. Best part is my haircut was only $25, and my husband's was only $12. Be aware that they are very busy on the weekends now so an appointment call is highly recommended especially on Saturdays. If you don't like to be rushed, then go during the weekdays as they are less busy on those days. Overall, I am very happy with the service and the price point of the hair cut. read more

I've come here two or three time already, and I'm pretty satisfied with the cuts i get here. I'm always on the lookout for good barbershops, and being how I've gone to so many different places, this is one of the ones where i've been most satisfied. My hair is really thick and coarse for an asian, but the hairstylists usually always do what i want, and they do it well. They are also all nice and friendly. I believe my hair is always cut by the owner, but the other hairstylists seem to do a good job as well. The price is not bad for women's hair--it's about $20-$25. If you're not getting your hair washed there, they don't really do much to style the hair after the cut like many other salons do. I've left the salon feeling a bit scared because of what i see in the mirror right after my hair is cut, but after i wash it and style it to how i want it, it looks great. My only gripe about this salon is that the last time i was here, i was the first customer of the afternoon. There were two hairstylists there and as usual, the owner cut my hair. It seemed to be a slow afternoon and therefore, the hairstylist seemed to take her time with the cut. But, when a second customer came in and requested her daughter's hair to be cut by the stylist that was cutting my hair at the time, the hairstylist started to rush and seemed a bit distracted while she cut it. when she finished, the ends and layers were a little uneven, but it wasn't anything too noticeable. I will never get back to here, really bad experience I had. She even didn't ask me of my requirements before start cutting my hair. The atmosphere there is quite weird and the conversation there are totally not friendly, barber seems can't be friendly basically. The barber talks all the time with a private guest while working, I suspect if she really can focus on hair cutting. If you come up with an idea of hair style, she even argue with you, I hate that unfriendly talking experience. Customers will not pay for arguing with you, they pay for a service! The service is good, the price is good and i really enjoy being there. Actually this is not my first time to come to this salon. I've been a loyal customer of this salon for half a year. I tried several salons before, but no one can compete with this one. First, they are professional, they always know what I want and they can always give me the perfect cut. Nancy was wonderful - out of the past three stylists I have had (as I said, I am new to the area so I am still trying to find a salon I can call mine) she actually listened to what I was looking for as far as color and gave me the perfect haircut and color. Used to getting my hair cut at Milpitas barbershop but since Ray retired; I have been doing salon hopping since then. So I hopped to this one since I was doing some grocery shopping. It is right next to the Marina Supermarket. The place is pretty clean from what I can eyeball and it had a nice atmosphere with open spaces. I hate salons that clutter everything... The lady is very polite. Made a lot of comments and suggestions on what hair styles & gel suits me and made it really comfortable. For business like these Yelp really needs to introduce 0 or negative star. I had the worst experience of my life in this salon. I was walking through the complex and thought will get done the underarms waxing, asked them they said it's $25, the rate was too much as pretty much I get the same service in downtown San Francisco in a posh salon. But then I was in hurry and thought maybe they must be good in it and use higher quality products. The lady who came to do my underarms looked like it was her first time doing it, when I am remembering the incident now... I am getting goosebumps. So the whole incident goes like this... I was asked to change on gown and lie down, I did so.. then no pre lotion or anything she just applied some powder and started doing it. Now mostly wherever I go and when I do it myself I take out everything in 2 or 3 wax application, that lady kept applying wax and nothing was coming out.. with this again and again force my skin was already sore. Somehow she removed a little bit. Now she said we will let this side rest and come back here again. I was like woman don't you understand it pains. Anyways she started on other side and again the same story, now she had to call the owner and then she started trying it.. she was a little better than this lady but no professional. Somehow after many attempts they were successful. They did left so much wax in my skin and weren't even able to clean it properly and when they tried, it pained me again. After all this I didn't say a word. One thing so unprofessional was they weren't closing the door when going out and there was no privacy.. I had to tell them again and again to do it. Now somehow they completed all this in 45 min, yes freaking 45 min they took. When I went to pay no apologies, no rate cut after they abused my skin more than what it can bear. I had so much pain afterwards that I ended up in Doc office with suggestion of eating pain meds. I can't even close my arms as it pains me when I do. I am going to complain this business to California salon authority and will try my best to give them a nice lesson after what they did with me. Please never go to this place. read more

I just moved to Fremont a few weeks ago, so I was looking for a new place to get my hair cut. My last place (in LA) was awesome so my expectations were high. I am a mother of thee boys so getting out to get my hair cut is a treat! My last hair dresser would massage my head while he washed my hair and then give me another mini massage during the cut. And my hair always looked fabulous. Star Salon definitely did not measure up. On top of the bad haircut the atmosphere was severely lacking. It was the quietest salon I have ever been in. It looked like the owner serviced me. I wanted to keep my hair length as is but wanted my hair layered. She kept asking me what I wanted for each section of my head. Especially the owner lady Ling and her daughter Nan, very knowledgeable about all the beauty products and provide great hair cut. I go there every 2 weeks. This is by far the best choice for reasonably priced salon in the area. I love the atmosphere and was always greeted with a smile. I also like the fact that they will not just take order from you for the styling choice, they will also professionally recommend a more fitting style or treatment for your hair as they see fit. Something I don't have to spend $50 or more for an opinion of a high end stylist. I get the same thing here!! I think this place is clean, professional, and highly skilled. This is the ONLY place I go to get my hair cut. I've had my hair cut by both Nan and her mother, Ling. I have unusually thick, unruly hair that doesn't style well without major thinning and a proper cut. Nan and Ling do a fantastic job and I always leave feeling good about my hair. This isn't some supercuts-type place where they cut your hair as fast as possible to get you in and out. Every time I've come here to get my hair cut, I know, due to the expertise and advice of either stylist, that my hair will come out looking great and will also be something I can continue to maintain and style for weeks afterward. I went there the other day and asked for a trim on bangs, but this lady was really unfriendly and talked/yelled the entire time. She also talked to the other lady in another language, that made me feel uncomfortable and disrespected.
