This is a very large cemetery with thousands of headstones sitting in a well manicured area of at…read moreleast a 5 to 10 acres. It sits next to Elgin Elementary school and across from Elgin intermediate school. Behind the cemetery is a small park with a pond. There are many graves from the 1800s, but this is still an active graveyard with some fresh additions. If you're looking for a particular grave, they do have a records building, but you will have to call the number pictured below to make an appointment. The cemetery has three entrances which allow for cars to drive in on the gravel roads. I was surprised not to find a Texas historical sign, only a marker. If you find yourself in the Elgin downtown area and you enjoy walking through old cemeteries, or if you're looking for a future forever home, you may wish to check this place out. check out the photos below for more information.

This is definitely one of those "in the middle of nowhere" cemeteries. However, it is well…read moreorganized and maintained. It is located on a very peaceful country road with cows grazing next it and there is a structure on the property that likely doubles as a church or school. The cemetery itself is split in half with the school house sitting in between. There is a Texas historical sign pictured in this review that is very informative. There are some headstones from the 1800s but the majority appear to be from the 20th century. The cemetery has the largest number of Woodmen of the world markers that I've seen located in one place. However, as the historical sign says, there was a Woodmen of the world lodge at this location. This appears to still be an active cemetery as there was a fresh grave from May 2022 on one side and a half a dozen or so on the opposite side. There also sits close to an acre of vacant land next to the property which appears to be dedicated towards future interments. Definitely a peaceful and pleasant place for your forever home.

This acre of field a few miles outside of Elgin on FM 1704 contains less than 25 graves. This…read moregraveyard is relatively recent considering the oldest grave is from 1972. Most of the graves here are after the year 2000 and most of them have the name McShan. Several of the headstones actually have photographs of the decedents posted on them. It's quite clear that the McShann family was of African descent. There are still a few graves that have no headstones, only the funeral home plaque. There is still room for about another hundred graves.

This cemetery is located about a mile from Elgin City Center on E. 2nd St. There is a historical…read moresign at the front of the cemetery which denotes this place as being primarily an African-American cemetery. There are hundreds of graves sitting on this acreage. Despite the fact that the grounds are mowed, many of the gravesites are in disarray with crooked and fallen over headstones. Another aspect of this place is the large number of handmade concrete markers with handwriting which were very inexpensive to make. For the most part the cemetery is fairly well ordered but there is some randomness to it as well as far as how the graves are arranged. This may still be an active cemetery, although the newest interment I could find was from 2020. The photos included in the review tell the rest.

They wouldn't even schedule the funeral until after the meeting so it was going to be 2-3 weeks away. This was their policy even though we'd planned and paid for everything in advance only a few weeks before. We call Brad and they were able to accommodate us immediately. Everything was arranged perfectly and with dignity. The cost was half of what we had arranged with the other home. I could not be happier with Providence-Jones.

Many if not most of the names on the headstones are of Swedish origin as the historical sign on the property points out. The cemetery is quite well laid out with a single gravel road running through it. The cemetery is nicely organized into family plots. The majority of the graves are from the early to mid-20th century, but there are a handful past the year 2000. Directly across the street sits the local community church that was rebuilt in 1981.
