I have been going to Star Nails off and on for the past 15 years. For the last three or so, the service and quality has plummeted. Today all I need was to have gel polish removed from my nails and to have a manicure. The manicurist was irritated I wasn't getting more done. My "manicure" consisted of have my cuticles clipped and my nails shaped (no oil, lotion, massage). I was charged $40. Needless to say, this is my last visit ever. read more

Past few times I have gone the cigarette smell is almost unbearable. My clothes and hair literally smell like cigarettes when I leave. They are super rushed and don't really do any nail prep, just start painting on the acrylic. I went to Star Nails for the first time since my other nail salon was very busy. I went Monday June 23rd and I had a women who sat on the right desk when walking in the door. I had a dip removal and a new dip with a small cut down. She was the worst person I have ever gone to for this. She was done in 35 minutes and never asked me if my nails was short enough or how I wanted them to be formed. I have been doing dip for the past five years so this isn't new to me. I am back in MA and going to my regular nail salon so she can redo my dip. Since out of ten fingers seven of them have chipped . I normally go 5 weeks before I have to do them again. The price wasn't any different that I pay back in MA, $50.00, When a regular walked in to have a mani/pedi she started talking to her and quickly finished my manicure. Said ok your done to me and I noticed when I left to do a quick errand she didn't put on the top shine on my left hand so I had to stop back and it was like I the consumer was putting them out. I also do my dip with sparkles so I know it lasts along time. I keep my nails short also so I don't need tips on them. They are my actual nails. I am new to the area and stopped in at Star Nails on a whim for a dip mani. As I sat and picked my color I could instantly smell strong cigarette smoke. I found the place to be a bit dirty and the fish tank was packed with about 12 large goldfish in a very small tank and it just gave me an ick feeling. But to be respectful and not just walk out I figured I would not be to judgey and tried to keep open minded as she was very nice. As they were taking my previous color off with a gel they applied with a brush, then filed it off, rinse repeat but they didn't take off all the previous stuff and painted over it. When I left and was able to really check out my nails I was able to see how thick the color was.. looked like I had bubbles on my nails. I had a regular dip mani with the chrome overlay brushed on and this all cost me $75!!! I was stunned it was so much and should of asked ahead so that was my bad. Yesterday's visit was my last - 3rd poor experience in a row (like I said to start, they used to be great - I gave the benefit of the doubt and 2 extra chances!). Significant changes in staff, and just no attention to detail. Today, I have 2 cuticle cuts and a very very sore toe, not to mention uneven cut and sloppy polish. I wanted hard acrylic on my nails and a color. I was quoted 40 dollars when I explained what I wanted. Matches price list on wall. After two hours and three different people doing my nails I go to check out and it's almost 60 dollars. Somehow, probably due to the language barrier I was duped into getting something called nano nails that isn't even listed on their services. The lady basically explained that if you want better quality you pay more like at the grocery store. I agree with that statement if you are told you are being charged 20 dollars more. Anyway I didn't ask for anything different and they did this without my consent and charged me. I can get a whole set of acrylics at Art Nails for 42. I'll be going back to them next time. read more

Four nails popped off within two days of getting acrylics here. I wasn't even doing anything within those two days that would justify a nail break, I was so angry. Another time I went one of the employees went outside to smoke a cigarette and left the door open so the whole shop started to smell. The employee doing my nails even put her mask on and said "I hate when he smokes, it's bad for him". I should've asked for a mask too. When I finally switched salons, (Angel Nails, unfortunately not great either), the employees at the new salon asked me where I got my nails done or if I did it myself! I told them I got them done at Star Nails and they called other employees over to see. They felt so sorry for me they took off the remaining nails to start a fresh set but still charged me for just a fill. read more

I personally really like Star Nails, especially Jo. I think she does great work but unfortunately because of this she is usually very booked up and busy, if you want to get her I suggest making an appointment specifically with her ahead of time. The other nail technicians don't do as great of work in my opinion. They don't ask me what shape I want my nails and always seem to file my nails crooked which is frustrating because I then have to file them short when I get home. Recently visited star nails got a pedicure and they used a filing block on my skin rather than on my nails, removed skin and cause bleeding and scarring under my toe nails. Also had dip done on my finger nails by someone that was learning, the dip was bubbling and came off some nails two days later, I returned to have it fixed and they said they didn't have time. read more

Tom told me he would take care of my nails and proceeded to do exactly that. He took great care (as I was in pain) and chatted with me about how I like my nails. Terrible manicure. My daughter went there for a basic manicure in preparation for her homecoming dance. They made at 4 of her cuticles bleed, the nails were not filed even. It was a gentleman there that did it, but honestly when I saw her nails and cuticles with all the dried blood, I called right away and was greeted with terrible customer service. At first I was extremely happy with my service. The gentleman there took his time to make sure I was happy with the shape and length of the tips before putting on the acrylic. The gel polish came out nice, despite a few imperfections which is fine since it can't be perfect every time. I got nicked a bit on my pinky finger while he was filing but I figured hey, it's not a huge deal. I was slightly worried since I noticed that the tools were not being sanitized. But even after all that I left happy as a clam with my new nails! Unfortunately in less than a week 8 out of 10 nails are lifting at the cuticle. As I think back to my experience, I do not believe the tech took the shine off my natural nails before applying the acrylic. Went into Star Nails with my roommate hoping to get our nails fixed, they were fixed a little but not tremendously and not for what we paid. We both got shellac and within two days, it was chipping. Went in around 5:30 and they rushed us out. The lady who did my nails put too much nail polish on creating a bubble look to my nails. It looked terrible. I have been going to Star Nails for 10+ years. Last night was my final visit. Quality and service had declined over past several months. Last night's visit was tainted with the overpowering smell of marijuana, a little boy who continued to jump on the nail tech (assuming his mother) which caused the tech to cut the client in seat next to me, who then yelped in pain, my nail tech did such a deplorable job that I would have been better of having the little boy do my nails. (And this was one of the techs who has been there a few years) I have tried to give them the benefit of doubt as I know they have some new and possibly inexperienced people there. I'm from Massachusetts up in Maine on vacation for a wedding and I needed an emergency repair on my thumb nail. I walked into the salon and was immediately greeted with warm smiles and reasonable prices. I went with my friend to get my nails done and the employee took an hour on hers and 20 mins on mine. Then he proceeded to do the shape of my friends nails on my nails without asking. Then the color I picked looked nothing like the one I picked so he rushed me to pick another color, the new color was see through and I ended up not liking it. I'm not sure if this place has new owners or if there were new people filling in when I came. However to say I was disappointed is a little bit of an understatement. I used to love coming here until my recent experience. First, the man who did my nails was very kind which was nice. However, before he started my nails he said he was going to FaceTime a friend of his in California, fine I wasn't in a rush. But then he had me tell his friend through FaceTime what I wanted done to my nails, I soon realized that she was walking him through everything step by step. It was like he had never done nails before. Not only that, every 10 minutes or so he would just up and walk away and disappear into the back, it ended up taking 2.5 hours just to get my nails done because he had to continuously ask his friend what to do and if he was doing it right. I did not catch his name or else I would leave it. While he was filing down my nails (I got acrylics) he actually filed one of my thumbs down so much that it broke through to my nail bed and started bleeding, that didn't stop him though as he put some liquid on it and just continued working. The only reason I am not giving this place one star is because of how polite everyone was, but it was extremely unprofessional and I am honestly scared to go back considering the infection I got from him filing through to my nail bed. read more

It was really painful - she kept digging her own nails into my toes and even cut my cuticle too far back. It was NOT relaxing or enjoyable...I kept wishing it would be over. Clean place. Went in for a pedi and a shellac manicure. My pedi kept getting interrupted because the person manning the register was doing mine. I feel the actual pedi part other then the polish was rushed. The manicure was nice, the women doing it was pleasant however I had to have the design redone, which still looks partially smudged. Also the French tip is much to thick for my small nails. I was really excited to get my nails done as I don't often and it was a Christmas gift to myself. I dropped by here a bit more than a month ago while I was visiting the greater Portland area and I felt like overall, the service was completely not worth what I paid. The atmosphere felt grungy: the pedicure chairs had broken back massagers and all of the facilities were old. I was also quite disappointed with the service, because the woman who attended me seemed like she was rushing to get me out the door. When she did the massage, she was very rough about it. It wasn't relaxing at all! I mentioned to her in the beginning that I had had an accident while biking a few months ago and there were still areas on my legs that were painful if pressed too hard but I don't think she understood me, and continued to press on. Their English wasn't good enough to understand what I was asking for. She also cut my cuticles too far back and it was really painful.
