Juliette's Guest House - The Pink Room (£171/night), up 1 flight of stairs

Where's that 3 1/2 star option?…read more What Juliette's Guest House (aka Dawson Place) has going for it are things I can't overlook: * Excellent location, in Notting Hill; * Nice, ample breakfast wheeled into your room at the time you specify; and * Charmingly authentic in-room Victorian era decor. Where Juliette's Guest House falls short is in two areas, one fixable and one not: * The mattress was like a plank. Laying in bed was the opposite of luxuriating in bed. Juliette, wherever you are, invest in new mattresses. * The house is on a corner and the side street has a good deal of car and bus noise. Bring your earplugs. With that out of the way, you should be able to decide if Juliette's is for you which likely comes down to how strongly you desire to stay in Notting Hill. A few other things to help you decide: * With no communal indoor rooms to sit in (though the garden is pleasant), Juliette's is some sort of hybrid B&B. There is always someone on-site to help but that person appears to be the hired help. This presented no problems during my 2 night stay. * There's stairs up to the front door and to your room. * Two nights, including VAT and breakfast, ran £311.22 ($378.97).

Our room was near the kitchen which we were always welcome in. They bring down a cart for breakfast. In the old days, you'd find yourself in a London BnB eating the classic English breakfast with sausages, baked beans, and a whole bunch of fatty, dense food you didn't want weighing down your stomach on a day walking around London. Instead, Juliette provides a lovely spread of toast and croissants (with FRESH butter, marmalade and jams), fresh orange juice, tea or coffee, muesli, cheeses, fruits, and a lower tier with milk and cereal ... all delivered at your morning leisure. They also have a stunning garden, where me and my travelers sat at the end of the day, relaxed, and drank our beers. An overall lovely place!

Portobello Gold - This was the mushroom toast, and it was so divine. I couldn't even take a picture before consuming it completely.

Beautiful service, lovely staff the food is incredible. The ceramic plates and serveware, warm-atmosphere -just top notch. This place is a gem. Thank you Gold for the dreamy experience By the way, I am writing this review as I sit at the table....its that good

However, this place was a pleasant surprise on a long weekend trip to London. Visiting Portobello market in the morning and being hungry at lunch, we stopped there just by accident, which we rarely do without consulting apps like, e.g., Yelp. (Would we had checked on Yelp, we probably wouldn't have gone.) Space was rare, so we were seated at the bar area with a full-scale view of the kitchen. Dishes (I posted some photos) served in a sharing/tapas style, the menu consisting of a variety of starters, grilled vegetables, and deliciously prepped meat options. Watching the chefs preparing the food right before us made the experience even more fascinating. We ordered six plates and all of them were very delicious. The service was quick and exceptionally friendly, paying attention to every detail. Before clearing our check, we were asked by someone of the senior staff (or owner?) if we were happy with our lunch. We confirmed that all was very good; just the squid was a little chewy (but still good). To our surprise, he insisted on taking it off the bill immediately. Well, he didn't have to because we ate it and were happy, but hey, it's one more of many, many reasons to give this place a full five stars.

This was our first trip to London, and I'm so happy we spent it at Astons Apartments!…read more First, the location is great. A few blocks from the Gloucester Street tube station (we walked it with our luggage, but YMMV) but off the main drag in a quiet residential part of the neighborhood, a little removed from all the big trendy hotels. There's a Waitrose grocery in the tube station, a great continental coffee shop, a used book store, a Pret A Manger, a Burger King, a chemist shop, a handful of pubs, really, everything you need two to four blocks away. Instead of a single building, Astons is a series of townhouses, and your apartment has an address as well as a room number. I love it because I like to feel more like a temporary local than a tourist. Then there's the price. We opted for the studio. Be warned, it is *tiny*. The bed and the table take up almost the entire room. BUT, it has a fantastic built in mini-kitchen closet sort of arrangement, with a fridge, a cooktop, a microwave and an electric kettle. We made meals in our room when we were hungry at weird times or just too whipped to think about where we could go. And all of that for about $100 a night. Hard to beat in London! We're the kind of travelers who want a clean, safe place to lay our head and stash our stuff because we want to be out and about seeing and doing. We're not looking for luxury, and that's not where we want to spend our money. Astons also offers one- and two-bedroom arrangements, but for the two of us, the studio was a perfect fit. Desk staff was friendly, particularly in the evenings when they gave us great pub recommendations. If you're looking for great value in a great location, you can't go wrong with Astons.

The rooms are located in apartment buildings so it feels homier than just being crammed into a big building full of rooms. I would recommend a double as I heard that the singles are TINY. There is no breakfast included, and I wish they had their Internet available at all times instead of just in the evening...but otherwise it's a great place to stay at reasonable rates for London!

Our room was cleaned everyday, we had a mini fridge, kettle with tea, coffee, sugar and cream, TV and a fan in the room as well. Bathroom a bit smaller, but nothing you can't handle. We were offered room no. 3 and 16. In 3 we spent the first night and the rest of our stay we were in room 16, since we chose to agree to switch the rooms. The staff kindly moved our luggage, so we didn't have to worry about it. In room no. 3 we had wifi connection, but in room no. 16 we didn't. The problem was solved immediately when we asked the staff about it and were given passwords to a different wifi :) The staff is very friendly and always helpful. As for us, we enjoyed our breakfasts - cereals, toasts, croissant, boiled egg, butter, cheeses, marmalades, nutella, tea, coffee, orange juice or just water. Hotel is just across the street from O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire. There is also a lovely park, Westfield shopping centre and the Shepherd's Bush underground station are just 5 min walk from the hotel. Also I'd recommend the Italian place right next to the hotel :) Next time, I go to London, I'll definitely choose Grantly Hotel again.
