Pork Chop
Scott L.

I've been waiting months to eat at Stanwood Grill and finally had my chance this week. Located in East Downtown, this is one of the fancier places in town for a treat yourself on the town. Reservations are a good idea on busier nights. If you arrive early, check out the shops nearby. For an appetizer I ordered the fried calamari. Tender, lightly breaded and crispy pieces served with a slightly spicy dipping sauce. This was done really well! Now, I don't normally rave about a house salad but this was a nice mix of spring greens, tomatoes, and cucumber spears. Highly recommend the smoked shallot vinaigrette dressing, which is apparently the sauce they use for the coleslaw too. I may get fish and chips next time just to try that. I must have had the largest pork chop ever served in my life, more than the 12oz expected. Done to a juicy medium, it cut like butter and melted easily in the mouth. Seasoned perfectly with a Dijon-white balsamic glaze served on a bed of roasted yams and some type of vegetable - forgive me I am not sure if it was some type of onion and it was crispy. Great place for a special event or treat yourself right, you deserve it!

Wish we had tried this restaurant long ago. We've been missing out! Interesting and creative menu. Service was sadly less than great, but friendly - like many places, I think they are a bit short-staffed. The food we had was really very good, and we will absolutely give them another go!

We first came to the grill about a month ago with a group of about twenty; despite the number of people, the service was very friendly and the food was absolutely amazing. I got a very good salmon salad, and my boyfriend got some huge steak that he loved. More recently, we visited here with a much smaller group of 4, and had a just-as-wonderful experience as the first time. When the fresh bread comes out, it is hot and a perfect mix of crunchy crust and soft inside, served with olive oil and herbs. No matter what entree you get, it will be high quality, fresh, and really truly tasty. The desserts are also rich and delicious! Often, when you order an entree salad at a restaurant, it'll either be low-quality greens, covered in fried stuff and cheap shredded cheese, or just not filling enough. The Stanwood Grill really knows how to make a good entree salad. I couldn't recommend this place enough! It truly is good, quality food and a wonderful experience.

"Special" prawn and andouille sausage with spinach pasta dish.... burnt to a char only tasted the char... not with $15 let alone $25

The building has been many other restaurants that couldn't make a go of it and last but I think Blue Heron is here to stay. Decorated in blue and white with black trim this place has a very clean look. I thought booth upholstery was nicely done. In the past it this interior was loud and echoed. Now it's been dampened some but we could clearly still hear the bar patrons from across the room. We had a reservation and Tessa (not sure of spelling) seated us and handled our table. She was good. Friendly and efficient. All I saw were young girls waiting tables. The menu has a bit of everything and I think they change it from time to time. They have seafood, shellfish in abundance. Mrs Billy D had the Parmesan encrusted Cod and it looked great. She loved it. I had their fish and chips. Next time I'll get the Cod. They have an Angus burger at 1/3 pound too plus shrimp and prawns dishes, clam linguine and others. They have a decent wine selection and have wine related events throughout the year. We ordered the warm bread appetizer which is sourdough sliced and toasted with an olive oil and parmesan dipping plate. We also got the bacon wrapped dates. They were fantastic. They might have been grilled or baked. So much flavor and they came drizzled in some kind of sweet chili sauce. They have a blackberry lime margarita which is what we chose. Mrs Billy D loved it and she is a margarita snob. Prices are on par with every other decent place and we got out of there for around $150 with a tip. Now that we know more we will be back.

It was a lovely sunny day so it was nice being outside - they do have large umbrellas but it doesn't cover the whole group so it can get a bit hot in direct sun. We didn't realize it, but we accidentally came during restaurant week (although we were supposed to have brunch). Since they only had 3 things on their brunch menu, we opted for the restaurant week menu. We tried the shishito peppers, poutine, tomato soup, burger, spaghetti, lemon tart, and a pate choux. A 3 course was $35 which is reasonable (portions were pretty small so easy to finish). The highlight were the tempura shishito peppers; the aioli that came with the peppers was delicious and the peppers themselves were hot and crispy. The poutine appetizers was unfortunately disappointing (very meaty, actually no curds at all and large soggy potatoes). The entrees took awhile to come out which wasn't a problem since we were just socializing. The burger was decent; it came with a goat cheese and the soup was good. Unfortunately, I would not recommend the pasta; portion was very small and it was very very salty (and had capers on top which did not help). We ended up getting our desserts to go since our group was heading to the wineries and tried them later. We did enjoy the dessert. The lemon tart portion was very small but tasty and the pate choux was also good too, so I would recommend the desserts here. I think this place is great for large groups and had a pleasant experience overall, but the rating is for the food alone which I was unfortunately pretty disappointed in.
