I well love this little place. Not one of my usual haunts (a pint of cider counts as one of your…read morefive a day, right?) but on occasion a place I'll pop into for a nosey. Or to kick start a week long (and only week long) health binge. It looks slightly dilapidated (just up my street) and surprisingly has quite a bit of character even though it does look like a Holland and Barret's reject. And, with me being a H & B reject is a good sign. Needless to say, they stock similar health food, supplement and remedy stuff in here. Though, it's got a more homely, relaxed feel about it. This is heightened by warm, friendly staff who could easily have you walking out of here with armfuls of stuff that you seemed to really need at the time. I don't know if it's just me but when entering a place like this the usual 'How are you?' question can take on a whole new meaning. For instance: "Hello and how are you?" "Oh good thanks. Well, a little tired what would you recommend?" "blah blah blah (hands over pills)" "Great. (pause) Oh and what about for healthy hair, skin and teeth..?" You can see how it goes. I suddenly turn into the walking dead and convince myself that something must be done about it. Anyhoo, this is a lovely, local little place which completely tops H & B. So if you're looking to get healthy or maintain your health with all sorts of herbal remedies give this place a go.

I don't visit this shop enough but whenever I do, I'm reminded of just how good their selection is for a small shop. I managed to find the nutritional yeast without any issues (it's great for giving things a cheesy flavour, in case you're wondering what it's for! You can use it for macaroni cheese if you're avoiding dairy, mixed in with blended cashews for a cream cheese substitute or on kale for crispy cheesy kale) and also got tempted by the Uber Bars at the counter. I thought I'd tried Uber Bars before but after eating it, I don't actually think I had - they're made in Glasgow and are made from raw dried fruit, nuts and seeds. I got a chocolate topped tropical one and it was amazing. So delicious, felt a bit indulgent and really pepped up my afternoon. I like having a browse of this store as I feel like I discover something amazing on every visit. The only reason it's not 5-star is that the staff sometimes are a bit unorganised - on this visit, the person serving was trying to serve someone else, even though he hadn't actually finished his shopping. So just left me standing there while he faffed about. I just wanted to pay and leave! Anyway, it's still a great shop and well worth a visit when you're in Finnieston.

Of course it would, but that would be awfully expensive, right? Well in the case of fruit and vegetables from the green grocer, that doesn't have to be true if you're going to roots and fruits. Really, it's slightly reductionist to refer Roots and Fruits as a green grocer. As well as beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables they sell teas, coffees, cereals, bread (mostly from Kember and Jones), eggs, meat, herbs and spices, milk, fruit, flowers and almost everything else you could need. Plus there's a small deli section offering soups, salads and other little delicious bits and pieces. Given the focus on ethical food here you feel like it should be expensive but it just isn't. I always expect my bill to run higher than it does. I'm always surprised at how much I'm able to buy even before I factor in my student discount. That's not to say I don't often end up buying items beyond those which I went in for - with so much to offer it's hard to avoid picking up something new to try. Nevertheless it's always unexpectedly cheap. There used to be more stores like this on Argyle Street. Companies like Tesco and Sainsburys priced them out and now only Roots and Fruits is left. I like that it's there as an option and I hope that it remains as an option for a long time, so even if it were more expensive I'd probably still choose to shop here when I can. Since it's less expensive it's actually foolish not to.

Nipped in today on my lunch break to check if they had nutritional yeast and ended up leaving with a bag full of goodies. They stock things you wouldn't normally see in other health shops, things you would have to buy online normally. The prices are pretty reasonable considering. I've never seen such a massive selection of vegan chocolate and sweets. Impressive! Also managed to pick up some vegan chipotle mayo and vegan garlic mayo. Delighted! There's a shelf with some great offers on at the moment; organic beans, peanut butter, chickpeas. Good selection of meat and milk alternatives in the fridge, as well as dairy free milk alternatives, natural energy juices and other cool stuff. Hair products, bath and shower products, vitamins and loads of other beauty and personal care items on offer too. They have freshly made giant samosas (vegan friendly) at the till for 99p. Bought one to try and it was so delicious. The folk serving really couldn't have been any nicer, they even gave me a handful of free tea samples. How lovely! Can see me being a regular customer in here. Best customer service and shopping experience I've had in a long time.

Morrisons is more in my budget range for the weekly shop, but there's always something in Waitrose to tempt you into spending more than you intended when you came in. Of course, all supermarkets want to do just that, but Waitrose seem to manage it more easily than most. This branch isn't huge, but it's somewhere larger than a 'metro' size and has more in it than you would think. They've even opened up a wee coffee bar at the front now, which seems to attract a few thirsty shoppers. The upstairs car park gives them a big advantage over Tesco and M&S farther down the road for bulk shoppers with deep pockets, but for me it's always a hand basket '5 items or less' style of visit.

Not only did it provide reassurance to it's residents that they were just as middle class as those from the nice parts of Edinburgh, but it allowed the West Enders to finally ditch their transparent bohemian pretence and concentrate on what's really important in life, like eating pheasant. When people talk about Waitrose it's position as a status symbol never seems far off their lips, but the quality is there too. If you're after something a bit special for dinner they sell countless brands you won't find elsewhere, and things like veal and venison that are often unavailable in other supermarkets. Well laid out, well stocked, and with a token nod to the fairtrade ethos if you feel guilty about spending a tenner on a loaf of bread. I'm glad they've arrived.

I usually go to Karada Massage in High Street but I fear they may have closed down :( I could not access their website or phone them. *sob* So I needed a back up fast. I read on this here Yelp that WH were pretty good & also a friend of mine recommended them. I was so in need of relief (steady!) I phoned & made an appointment for that day. Got one luckily no bother. Brilliant. I wasn't sure exactly what type of massage to get (as they really do so many various kinds) so I explained to the nice lady on the phone & she said I could discuss my requirements on arrival with my therapist. My therapist was Isabel and she was very nice indeed. I explained to her my pain & she asked a few (relevant) questions & then said she would cater the massage to my needs ~ this being a back, shoulder, neck & face/head massage. Lovely job. I could not wait. My massage was for an hour and it was so so good. A wee bit sore at times but it was necessary as I was really knotted up & as tense as a very tense thing (apparently). She was very thorough and she did indeed massage all parts necessary, including my face which was so nice BUT as I didn't know I was getting a facial I had on my usual make-up which by the end of the massage, of course, ended up smudged all over my face! Ha ha! Oh dear...luckily they have a wee bathroom (with lovely smelling hand soap!) you can 'fix' yourself in after or else I would've scared the people of Woodlands with my mental clown face. Again. Doh. My particular massage treatment was £40 which you might think is a bit steep but for how much it helped me & how well it was catered to my needs I thought it was fair. Their website has a handy price-list so you can check how much your treatment should be before you go and check at what days/times they are available. Isabel recommended I come again in 2 weeks time (Yes, it was THAT bad!) and I did and again it was brilliant. She suggested monthly massages to me & I am actually really up for it as I am one of these people that really needs a good massage regularly. If only I was richer! Another really good thing about WH is that they stay open late on a Wednesday (and other evenings too), until 8pm I believe. This is great if you work 9-5pm. I also like the wee shop they have in here ~ lots of vitamins & herbal treatments/goodies, food/snack things & other stuffs. I just love the smell of this place as soon as you walk in...Mmmm! Herbs!
