As we have moved around the area from…read moreEast Carmel/Noblesville to West Carmel - they have attended 4 local dance schools in 14 years. I can say good things about all of the dance schools. However we made a major decision to move from competition dance to a ballet studio last year. There are several wonderful ballet programs in the local area - however - my daughter, as well as myself both felt strongly there is not a better program than what is offered at BTCA. BTCA really provides the total package for both care for the dancer and the person. She had auditioned at BTCA for a summer program previously and we both really liked the "vibe" of the studio when she simply attended that audition. At the time - she wasn't considering leaving her competition studio - she just really liked her audition experience at BTCA. When she got serious about changing studios - and auditioned at multiple programs in the city - she knew the right choice for her was at BTCA immediately. As a parent - I became immediately aware of the differences in all the programs she looked at vs her competition studio - in fact every instructor had notated the "gaps" in her technique that were created by her competition training. I point this out as I learned these "gaps" can lead to significant injury for young dancers. I would encourage others to look at a studio and the number of injuries their students suffer. If it seems like an extraordinary number of students are on a first name basis with the orthopedic dr's and physical therapists in the city - you should seriously worry. This would apply for gymnasts as well. Of course kids will get injured in athletics sometimes - but it's when the numbers of kids become a statistical anomaly I would worry. Most importantly Jane - the director at BTCA - immediately identified how she could work with my daughter to not only address these deficiencies in her training - but most importantly how this would protect her from further injuring her body. Moreover - I was impressed by the CARE that Jane puts into EVERY DANCER in the program. Other studios have a few "super stars" and then "the rest" of the kids. I have seen first hand how kids are built up emotionally and then cast aside when they struggle, plateau, or get injured. The emotional effects on these kids is very damaging. Coaches will say they are "toughening them up" which holds some truth - but not if the methods are in fact just hurtful not helpful. Many kids drop out entirely but the coaches do not care as there is always more kids coming in the door. It creates an unhealthy environment that leads to those stereotypes of "dance moms" that people assimilate with the TV show of adults behaving badly. That kind of environment is not present here at BTCA. In fact - when Frank and Jane's names come up in the "industry" - you will find that everyone respects and admires them and their program. I would echo that sentiment. They instill in their dancers great technique, performance, and most importantly decorum. I encouraged both of my daughters to dance as I realized they were learning much more than just how to pirouette through their training. They are confident, well spoken, brave, and grounded young ladies. Whether you are looking for a fun activity or hoping for your child to become the next ballet superstar - this is the best program you could find. Your child will flourish here whether they are just beginning to dance or advanced and looking for a day program as well as everything in between. And if you are looking to see a wonderful ballet - make sure to come see these talented dancers! The show they put on is better than many professional productions!

We had a horrible experience at performers edge dance studio…read more My 3 year old daughter was tearing up in class due to the teacher being insanely strict about standing on a dot and not looking at herself in the mirror. The teacher then proceeded to say "NOPE. no we are not crying about this NO" when my daughters eyes started to well. I was uncomfortable with her being spoken to this way and I called for my daughter to come out into the lobby. There is no door on the studio and the entire space is very outdated so I could hear and see everything that happened. My daughter listened to me and safely and slowly started walking to me waiting in the lobby outside of the studio room. The teacher then said "no" to my daughter and grabbed her arm to drag her back to her dot which resulted in her falling. I repeatedly asked the teacher to stop and said "please give her to me". I had to pull my daughter from her. The studio condoned this behavior by saying it was appropriate for the situation. If you want your child to feel safe and develop a love of dance I would not recommend this studio. I have video footage of this situation that they sent me and would very much like to share with anyone curious and wanting to see as it will not allow me to attach videos to my review. I did not feel this was a safe or nurturing environment for my child and she was deeply disturbed by this teachers lack of respect towards children.

I signed my daughter up for a trial class back in April and never was told to try to sign up for…read moreanother trial class again in the summer because the spring course was already halfway through. So I called to schedule the trial for this past Monday (20$). We got to the class about 10 minutes early as the employee on the phone stated that they would give me a tour. We got there and the girl at the front desk seemed clueless and really wasn't helpful at answering any questions. Then, two teachers came out at the same time for two different classes, which made it very confusing for the amount of adults and children that were in the waiting area. As we did not get a tour, I was unaware that there was no seating area for the parents to watch their children as my child is just about to turn three and was in the 3 to 4 year-old moving class. So, they all lined up at the entry door and started marching towards the classroom. At that point I realize that parents were not allowed and children began yelling and crying, and my daughter got very nervous. So I then followed them to the room where they closed the door and there was kids left crying on the floor and teachers, grabbing children to carry them back into the room. Me and another mom were not happy about this experience as it was not presented to us before we signed our children up for this class. They need to better prepare the parents that this class the children have to go in alone for 45 minutes without seeing their parents. I then proceeded to go down the hallway to take a peek through the blackout glass to see how my daughter was doing and got told by one of the ladies working there that I needed to leave because the children can see me. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to leave when my daughter is nervous and there are girl crying on the floor for their moms. Plus, she was not prepared that she would be without me for this class. So, 45 min later, the children walked out and we were not told anything about the class. My daughter came out and started crying. How do you expect a three year-old to tell you whether or not they enjoy the class and what they did? So, my husband went up to the front desk and asked questions as to if the teacher had any feedback or what the next steps were and again the front desk was clueless and had nothing to. I feel as though this experience was very unwelcoming and unprofessional, and I will not be going back nor do I recommend children ages 3 to 5 to come here.

Hip hop classes, yes please!…read more One of the most legit hip hop teachers in the city, Fonzie, made the class fun and interactive. The class itself is an hour and fairly low-key - just pure fun. Everyone learns new moves for the first 20 minutes of class, learn a dance, and then do it in groups of two with Fonzie. Only $10 a class. Music: Loved it. Lots of Chris Brown and Bruno Mars. The class can also request songs for choreography each week. Studio: Spacious and modern, the studio boasts a huge mirror, exterior seating, and a huge dance floor. It's a bit hispanic too and made me want to take a salsa class later too. Location: The building is on the corner of Michigan and Capitol, but the door is a bit hidden and is located on Capitol. Look for the Riolo Dance logo printed on the door, walk in, and take the elevator to the second floor.

I haven't taken his other classes yet at Riolo but look forward to one day as I have heard great things! If you like zumba-style classes then you know it's all about having a great instructor. Once you find one you love, it becomes the best part of your day and you never want to miss a class. That is Xavier to so many people in Indy! You can tell they are experienced at working with kids which made my daughter feel comfortable pretty quickly. She asks me at least 5 times a week when she can go back to dance- I think she would go every day if she could!
