When we finally decided to buy a work by this artist, the subject matter dictated that we frame it using a specific type of wood. Numerous framing shops told us this type of wood was not available. Diane told us the same thing, but she had a local woodworker source that had some of this wood in his private stock. Diane and her source designed the profile of the frame and her woodworker manufactured and assembled a custom frame that is the perfect match for our artwork. She didn't smile, say good morning, or make small talk. When she finished cutting the fabric, she tossed it onto the table rather than handing it to me. She did the same with my receipt, simply tossing it toward the center of the table. These small interactions added up, making me feel unwelcome. I'm left wondering why I shouldn't just buy fabric at Walmart if the customer service and expertise are going to be the same. To make matters worse, the other customers seemed unfriendly as well. The combination of casual dismissiveness and practiced condescension when I expressed interest in their luxury pen selection? Remarkable.
