So let me first say that I, like many of you, have endured the search and after looking at so many schools I found the very best. St. Matthias as been impressive from the very first encounter. From the tour, to the interview process, in the preparation process and most especially as the school year began. The principal, teachers, teachers aids and everyone we have encountered thus far. I know this review may seem idealizing but I assure you that I consider myself a hard critic and cannot adequately express how pleased and impressed we are with St. Matthias School. My daughter was bullied and even with written statements from teachers the privilege students were suspended for 4 days. They pushed her down in the bathroom while a few stood watch at the door. Took pictures and only 4 days. When they returned the verbal and emotional abuse continued in class with teacher as witnesses. I had to pull her out of the school for her mental and physical safety. She is now a thriving and productive senior. Most of all a happy young lady. Bullying is REAL at this school

I have been happy with their education - the…read moreacademic environment is challenging, the extra-curricular activities offered are varied -and include a thriving theater and performing arts group, a student newspaper which has garnered national awards, international club, art club, student government (and more) and a wide variety of competitive sports teams. The education coupled with the Christian tradition and the array of activities gave my children a well-rounded education. The teachers are dedicated to their students. Many also coach teams or moderate clubs after school. They provide "extra help" to students who require it. They don't leave when the bell rings. Graduates have gone on to top notch schools as well as middle tier schools and also RCC, just as students who have graduated from the New Jersey Catholic schools or the NY public schools. Graduates have received ample scholarships for academic performance and have been awarded significant financial aid awards too. Albertus tuition is significantly less than their New Jersey Catholic school counterparts. When deciding on a high school for your child, the best approach is to contact each school under consideration, ask for their college data, read their brochures, check out the websites, talk with teachers, current parents, students, and graduates. Also arrange for your child to visit for a day to get a feel for the atmosphere. Attend a sports contest, concert, play, or art show. These are usually advertised. If you and your child are lucky enough to make the "right" decision (best school for your child and it may not necessarily be Albertus Magnus), you will know when he or she says as my student did, "I love Albertus!"

Even…read moreif you are looking for a Catholic Education experience, there are a number of top schools in Bergen County, New Jersey that are far more worth your tuition money and have much better collegiate connections. I wouldn't waste your time or hard earned money on Albertus Magnus. Most of the educators there are simply unable to find a "real" job in a public school, and the rest are just there temporarily to gain experience so that they can move on. There no longer exists the teachers that are there for the students and plan on sticking around to guide them through their formidable years and assist in the transition to college. The guidance department is a complete sham with hardly any experience, knowledge or contacts. My advice, either save your money or spend it on a REAL school.

One of my kids is now at BHSEC Queens; the other graduated from BHSEC Manhattan a few years ago. (I…read moreapologize in advance for any overlap in my reviews.) Bard Queens is the second of its kind, a public high school with an accelerated program that takes 2 years to complete. The second two years are for college-level work (and, indeed, kids graduate after 4 years total with both a HS diploma and an A.A. degree from Bard College). Those 2 years of college credits can be transferred to some 4-year colleges, giving kids who want it a huge savings in both time and money. Kids have to take a placement exam (not the SHSAT) to qualify, but even if you do well, it's hard to say whether BHSEC Queens is for you. It's a small school, and sports are not a huge part of the culture here. It's in an unlovely part of LIC, close to Laguardia Community College and various subway lines but not much else. Writing is very important; you don't have to be a great writer at 14, but you should probably be open to improving in this area. Those are the caveats. The benefits of this school are enormous. The quality of the faculty is extraordinary: Most have PhD's, and they are devoted to teaching teenagers, constantly available to meet with them and provide extra help. The administration is terrific, and the office well run. The building is modern, well kept, and light-filled. The student body is quite diverse and active in a variety of clubs and activities. College counseling is just beginning for my child's class, but things seem pretty organized. The classes are small and most are seminar-style. Lots of discussion, lots of back-and-forth in the classroom, lots of writing (see above). Expectations are high; you're expected to work hard and be intellectually curious. If you want big lectures, multiple-choice tests, and anonymity--forget it. The BHSEC model has expanded to Newark, Cleveland, and New Orleans. Clearly, there's a demand for accelerated HS education. For the right kid, these schools will be life-changing. As with any educational choice, the key is to know yourself.

The teachers are warm, attentive, and truly understand early childhood development. They create a nurturing environment where kids feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. The program strikes a great balance between play-based learning and early structure. Our children developed strong social skills, independence, and confidence during their time there. Communication with parents has also been consistent and thoughtful, which we really appreciated. Our daughter went on to Beechwood School and felt very well prepared--both academically and socially--for the transition. It was clear that her preschool experience gave her a strong foundation and a love of learning. We're very grateful for the care and guidance both of our children received and would highly recommend Community Presbyterian Nursery School to other families.
