There was no communication during the process, being left in the dark while those seats were quietly filled from outside. The teachers were nice and the early education itself was a fine experience. But if you are choosing this school because you want your child growing up here through eighth grade, understand that is not a promise they actually keep.

Both of our children have loved coming to school at St. Hilda's each day. Beginners offers a beautiful introduction to school, with a warmth and groundedness in early childhood development--each day, there are new activities to try and things to learn, whether building towers and train tracks, growing plants in the greenhouse, cooking season treats, making water creatures and marble paintings, learning yoga poses, singing songs, and so much more. The introduction to school in Beginners is a wonderful one--the teachers are warm and kind, and foster a love of learning. With each grade, the school expands, and Nursery, JK, SK, and 1st grade, are met with science, art, language classes, the greenhouse, PE, and the playdeck. The curriculum is really integrated - students practice letters and numbers across social studies and foreign language classes as well as in their homeroom work time; when they study world cultures in their classrooms they simultaneously learn games played around the world in PE; their science classes connect with concepts in math worktime; and their art projects often coincide with world cultures and school celebrations. Our boys have loved learning each year about the solar system and outer space, the brain and the body, and the foundations of science, and the nearly 30 countries where French is spoken. It's impressive and thoughtful, and indicative of how St. Hilda's approaches so much of the school--with careful consideration, expertise, and a wonderful implementation. The faculty at St. Hilda's are truly remarkable. Teachers come to school with enthusiasm and joy, and it shows in their creativity in the classroom. Our children have learned so much from each teacher, from art to science to PE, because of the excitement and attentiveness of their teachers. It is an extraordinarily warm environment with an incredibly rigorous intellectual process undergirding how the school approaches each age of development and academic unit. The school is, from top-to-bottom, incredibly thoughtful about the education and experience of the children and their families. One more thing that we wouldn't have recognized until we were in it - St. Hilda's is a school for children, and also a school that values families. Events typically start in the evenings so parents with a range of responsibilities can, by and large, attend. One of the first things the Head of School often says is a thank you to the parents for taking time out of their days and family life to be there. It's small, but we've noticed how deep it runs. The school values the families as people, and families matter here. Activities and other events are similar, and the communication is aimed at making life easier for busy parents. It's perhaps a small thing, but indicative of the approach of the school, and it's created another part of a wonderful experience. In short, St. Hilda's is a truly special place. It has academic excellence combined with a warm and loving atmosphere. It has world-class teachers with deep expertise who have a true love of learning and the children they teach. And it has a wonderful community of people who value kindness, dedication, and the joy of learning.

We get frequent feedback about his progress, with lots of practical suggestions about how we can support him. I feel like the teachers are really working with us to help him succeed, and that they really "get" him--and us. Now that he is in first grade and the work is a little more academic, he seems to be thriving with the additional structure of a desk and a uniform. Our daughter is now in the nursery (3s) program and so far, we are equally pleased. She is very different from her brother, but she is comfortable, happy, and looks forward to school. Doesn't hurt that the classrooms are beautiful and full of fun things to do! In many ways this school feels like a throwback, in the very best way. There is a wholesomeness and sincerity about the students and families, and it doesn't feel like the program is trying to push them into too much too soon. I feel like the faculty is incredibly thoughtful and smart about what kids need at the various stages in their development. So far, so good, and we are looking forward to many more happy years here!

The classrooms were well stocked, seemed very safe, the administration staff was lovely. The building is beautiful. Kids are terrific. I liked most (all?) of the teachers except, sadly, for my daughter's teacher. I don't want to "out" anybody so I won't mention her name, but she was much too stoic for a preschool teacher. Rarely smiled. Never seemed happy. Her natural resting face was sort of a half-scowl that makes her look unhappy. She wasn't a warm person, and it made me sad to think that my daughter's first teacher wasn't a warm, loving, smiley person. Stoic. There WERE teachers that were warm, loving, and smiley. Just not my daughter's teacher. The assistant teacher was very nice, but quiet and not very engaging. The curriculum didn't seem all that challenging to me. I realize it's a preschool, but come on! The students are presumably from good families with parents who take an active role in their child's learning. That's one of the reasons why the kids are not in public school. The curriculum of preschool could've been more challenging. I didn't think the Spanish education was particularly strong. After a full year at Maryel my daughter couldn't express "I have", "I want", "I am", "I feel". I've been teaching my daughter Hebrew, just 30 minutes a day and she mastered these things in Hebrew. It seems odd that she didn't master these basic components of communication in Spanish after a full year. In fact, I'm completely at a loss how that's even possible. Lack of transparency on the website. I tried to look at my daughter's teacher's credentials: her degrees, where she obtained her degree, academic achievements and specialties, etc. Even a short biography. This is pretty commonplace for private schools, but I didn't see that information on their website. To me this possibly indicates a high turnover rate in teachers, which indicates a low teacher salary, which indicates less-than-optimal education. Considering that one year of my daughter's preschool cost more than one year of my PhD, I expect high quality. Someone at the school smokes; I can smell it in the halls. The kids have to climb considerable stairs to get to their classrooms. The daily reports were appreciated; I wish they didn't have so many spelling and grammar mistakes. I'm not a grammar Nazi, but when it comes to academics, I kind of expect... I don't know... a better quality of writing. One last thing on my mind. The kids would have music activities, and the choice of songs was simply dreadful. There are so many wonderful, melodic, kid friendly songs yet the teacher picked awful songs for a pre-K. Songs with weak or even ugly melodies. Songs with poorly chosen Spanish for 3/4 year old Spanish learners. I would watch videos of the songs the class would sing and just be floored at how poorly chosen the songs were. I don't want to seem like I hated our year there. It's a decent school, really. That's why I gave it 3 stars, which indicates "A-OK". It's just that for the money, I was expecting something much, much different. I was expecting much higher standards.

Children deserve an educational environment where their academic progress, emotional well-being, social development, confidence, and sense of belonging are protected above all else. My child attended East Woods from nursery, and my greatest concern has always been the impact on my child. In my experience, my child did not receive the level of support needed to truly thrive academically, socially, or emotionally. Important learning needs were not identified or addressed in a timely manner, and seeing my child struggle academically, including entering first grade without the reading foundation expected for that level, was heartbreaking. A child's education is about much more than tuition, enrollment, or attendance. It is about recognizing each child's individual needs, supporting their growth, building confidence, encouraging friendships, and ensuring that they feel valued and supported. During a difficult family situation, I believe my child's educational experience was negatively affected by decisions surrounding parental involvement. I was excluded from aspects of my child's school experience, and my understanding was that this occurred because the other parent, who was responsible for tuition payments, would not continue with the school unless I was excluded. Regardless of the circumstances between adults, the child should always be the priority. A school's responsibility is to protect the child's academic progress, emotional well-being, social development, and relationship with supportive parents whenever possible. My concern is that children from families experiencing divorce or separation deserve the same level of care, neutrality, and advocacy as every other child. No child should lose opportunities for support, connection, or a sense of belonging because of adult disagreements. Parents place enormous trust in school leadership. They deserve transparency, fairness, and a commitment to putting children first. Families should feel confident that concerns are heard, learning differences are recognized, and decisions are made based on what is truly best for the child. I encourage parents to ask questions about how a school handles learning needs, parental involvement, and difficult family situations. If other families have experienced concerns regarding communication, educational support, or their child's school experience, I encourage you to document your experiences and seek appropriate guidance. No child should lose opportunities to learn, grow, feel supported, and thrive because of circumstances beyond their control. The child must always come first.
