Two weeks later, I was battling with them to complete what they had initially indicated to the lender would have been completed 4 days earlier. One of the legal assistants indicated he had lost my address three days after it had been "due" and indicated that the paperwork could not be completed without it???!! As a result, our closing was delayed and they blamed it on "miscommunication" and their "vacation time". They then tried to charge an additional fee of $150 to deliver the already delayed paperwork to another attorneys office. The lender agreed that the service was lousy and my agent was beside himself. I do not buy and sell for a living, so when real estate professionals that I hired and trust indicate that we are getting lousy service, I believe them. I cannot speak to the attorney's knowledge, skills or abilities, nor do I know what their "specialties" are. That being said, I would NOT recommend them for real estate transactions because it does not seem they have the time or enthusiasm to get the job done. They might learn the lesson from this that they should not accept work that they do not have the time or desire to do well, as it reflects poorly on the office as a whole. Update...In the end the office did facilitate getting the documents moved to the new office and while the closing was a day late, it worked out. So I am raising the stars from 1-3.

I wanted to ensure that I setup this venture the right way and paid whatever taxes/fees are necessary so that I wouldn't get in hot water with state or federal regulators later. Terry took his time answering all of my questions and provided the information to me in a way that I could understand. One word of warning. Once you walk into Terry's office he's going to talk your ear off. The stories are going to be entertaining and he'll suck you in with how engaging he is. I trust him. I trust his advice. He's not going to let you do anything that may get you in trouble and that's what I need in an accountant. You'd do well take advantage of his services.

Terry blew many things out of proportion to make it seem like this minister that only made $24k a year would owe thousands of dollars. When it came down to it, we only owed hundreds, thankfully. He always made me feel like I had stolen money from the government in some way, form or fashion. I left in tears every time I left his office. we only used him for 2 years and we left the area. I haven't had an ounce of tax problems since.

Two other Cullman attorneys whom I contacted would not even return my calls, but Steve at Smith & Smith sat down with me in his office, reviewed my offer, and suggested changes to the contract that would accomplish my goal. He also helped me interpret an old family deed. All of this was done at no cost to me. At a later date, I had a document notarized at Smith & Smith, and I was not charged for that service either. Everyone at the firm has always been friendly and professional. If and when I am able to finalize a home purchase in Cullman county, I look forward to having Steve handle the closing.
