I recently went to Szechuan Garden in Topanga Canyon with my husband, and unfortunately, this was an experience I will not repeat. From the moment we arrived, the energy felt uncomfortable. The owner/waiter was extremely rude, abrupt, and not customer-friendly. We were asked if we were ready to order, and before we could even respond properly, he walked away from the table. When we said that we were ready, we still ended up waiting another 10 minutes. I ordered the corn soup and a vegetarian dish. When the soup arrived, I immediately noticed that it contained chicken. I am vegan and had not touched the soup. I explained this to him, and he insisted that he had already told me the soup contained chicken. My husband and I both know that he did not mention that when we ordered. He took the completely untouched soup back, but I was later charged for it. I had to ask him to remove it from the bill, which he eventually did. My husband said the tofu was okay, but honestly, good food doesn't make up for terrible customer service. The way we were treated completely ruined the experience. I also want to be clear that I am writing this review as a reminder to myself not to make the mistake of returning. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends or family, and if you have other options, I would seriously consider going somewhere else. Customer service matters. Respect matters. My son and I have been talking about trying this place for about 2 weeks now and we finally came in for dinner tonight. We parked in one of their 3 parking spots in the back and entered through the rear entrance. We were greeted by Aya who mentioned they were having some plumbing problems so we needed to sit in the front section of the restaurant. The place is pretty small and compact, with about 10 tables. It's family owned and been around for 25 years. The prices are pretty affordable for the portion sizes. Not much ambiance or decorations, but there was some nice Italian music playing overhead and some Christmas decorations that are apparently hung up year-round. Both Thomas and Aya waited on us and they were both pleasant and kind with nice smiles. Thomas quickly brought out some waters along with their complimentary focaccia that came with olive tapenade. The bread tasted old and stale and wasn't warm, but I liked the tapenade. Surprisingly, we were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink and also never got refills on our waters until I had to ask for one. I ordered the Italian salad with dressing on the side and I asked if the carrots that came in the salad were cooked or raw, since I don't like raw carrots. Aya happily suggested that they can cook me some carrots separately and bring them on the side, which is what they did. Even though the carrots were not really cooked that well, the gesture was still greatly appreciated. Other than that, all the ingredients were very fresh and the dressing was LIGHT, just how I like it. For our entrèes, I got the Pollo Della Cassa which came with chicken breast and mushrooms baked with mozzarella cheese, served on pasta with Alfredo sauce. ($24.95), with an add-on of shrimp (+$3.00 for 3 shrimps). I also asked for light sauce, not too soupy, and that's exactly how it was prepared. The food was piping hot, very fresh, and delicious. My son ordered the Pollo Limone ($24.95) that came with grilled chicken breast with lemon sauce on mushroom risotto. He was not the biggest fan of his food but still ate all of it. He also asked if he could get a side of veggies and they gladly brought out a medley of sautéed broccoli, zucchini, and carrots. We were not charged for the side of veggies and also the salad, which was very generous of them. To end the meal, you get a small complimentary square of Tiramisu which is a nice little treat. The customer service is truly the best part of this restaurant and you can tell that there is a lot of love involved here. They really care about their guests and want you to feel happy and satisfied. Due to some minor ticks here and there, I think I am going to stick with 4 stars overall. The restaurant was clean but just kind of unpleasant. You could also smell the bleach right when you walk in and sometimes the smell would waft through the air. It was also really hot in the restaurant and I don't think the A/C was working. They have one bathroom for each gender and they were very clean. I also asked for some change to leave cash for the tip, but Thomas told me they didn't have any cash in the restaurant. How can that be? Thank you Spumoni, Aya, Thomas, and the chefs. Will I return? Our first visit to Spumoni in a very long time, and it was nice to be back in this cozy trattoria run by friendly people determined to serve you a pleasant and memorable meal. With World Cup matches keeping people home or at raucous pubs, this little restaurant was quieter than usual this Sunday night, so we were seated immediately and were tended to by the owner. Take note: he started here as a busboy 26 years ago and now runs the place; he cares quite a bit about everything, and it shows. Yeasty, house-made bread is served warm, accompanied by a very lightly seasoned olive tapenade that's a cool and refreshing start to the meal. My wife ordered the Salmon Limone for her entree, a generous portion of fish, lightly grilled and served atop pasta (normally dressed with a lemon butter sauce, but exchanged for a creamier, herbaceous pesto). The salmon was perfectly cooked and sported a subtle flavor that contrasted well with the heartier, more richly rendered pesto. I opted for the Scampi Limone for my own entree, featuring 6 jumbo shrimp, butterflied and poached, resting atop angel hair pasta with the aforementioned lemon and butter sauce. Initially, I had been expecting there to be a more aggressive use of garlic, but I quickly came to enjoy the gentler preparation, and the buttery foundation of the sauce. Before our check was delivered, a half portion of tiramisu was brought to our table gratis, a gesture we really appreciated. It provided a lovely, sweet send-off, as did our host, who shook our hands and invited us to return. There's just one caution about Spumoni. There is another, completely unaffiliated restaurant with the same name in Santa Monica, and even when you have clearly searched and located the Sherman Oaks venue via Google, clicking on the website link will take you to the website for the other restaurant and, consequently, their menu, which is completely different. The owner says he has tried, but has been unable to get the glitch corrected. To see the menu for this place in Sherman Oaks, you need to look at photos in its Yelp profile or on Instagram. That strange glitch aside, do give Spumoni a try -- it's likely you'll like it. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended by my friend who orders here regularly. On my birthday my son said that he'll treat me for dinner so we went here last Friday night. We found parking in the back area and as soon as we entered we were greeted by the staff. My son ordered Pollo Siciliana and I got the farfalle al Salmon. I also got a glass of Pinot Grigio which is actually good. They give you a complimentary bread and an olive dip. I love the warm bread and the olive dip that comes with it is a welcome change from the ordinary. I enjoyed my pasta and the sauce is really rich and creamy. My son's pasta is good if you like tomato-based and not cream based sauce. My favorite is when they give you a complimentary tiramisu dessert. We were even given extra slices to take home. That's a nice touch that will certainly make us go back for more. They have a few tables and I would say it's a good place for a casual meet up or for families. read more

There's indoor and outdoor seating, both were good and inside smelt amazing and like authentic Italian food, but we decided to sit outside because it was quieter. The restaurant itself has a nice vibe, great spot for dinner. Our server was okay, it seemed like every time I asked for something he seemed annoyed/bothered making me feel uncomfortable asking or ordering anything. However, we did go on a very busy night so maybe he was just stressed or overwhelmed. We ordered the calamari and carbonara pasta. The calamari was okay, but I was pretty disappointed with the carbonara, it lacked flavor. HOWEVER, the pizza... the pizza tasted phenomenal!! The perfect spot for a cute, cozy Italian date night. The food was delicious and the service was excellent!!! Everyone was so kind & attentive. We got the bruschetta which was the perfect start to the meal. Refreshing, light and tasty. We then followed it with the Caesar Salad which you really can't complain about. The real star of the show was our pastas!! We got the spaghetti Carbonara, and I must say it is probably one of the BEST carbonara I've had. The perfect ratio of everything and it was soooo tasty! We also got the Farfalle alla Vodka which was so good! The capers added a nice flare to the dish. They gave us free Tiramisu after which was the perfect way to end the meal. It had everything you want when it comes to a Tiramisu. We don't crave Italian food often, but when we do, we go to Spumoni. We know we will always have a great experience there. They play classic Italian music like "That's Amore", the owner is the friendliest man you'll ever meet, and the food is top notch and served with love at a reasonable price. I went on a weekday dinner with my wife and toddler, and there were many open tables. The waiter brought us water and bread with olive tapenade. The owner, an older Italian gentleman, came out to give us recommendations on the menu. He asked what our toddler liked to eat and brought us out a small kids sized plate on the house. Our chopped salad came split in two plates without us needing to ask for it. The owner chatted with us about the beauty of life and spending time with family. The spaghetti carbonara was out of this world. The chicken limone had an excellent grilled flavor with just the right amount of lemon. They brought us to go boxes when we mentioned we wanted to save some for lunch the next day. And of course they brought out the complimentary dessert. This was our second time at Spumoni. Our first visit was great, and the owner/manager just happened to come by each table and chat for a bit. We visited again for late Mother's Day dinner, and that wasn't just a "one-off". The owner, whose name we now know is Vasik, did the same thing we saw him do years go. He greeted guests at each table, and checked on everyone and often, IN ADDITION to taking orders and serving food. He enjoyed some bread and olive tapenade, to start. We ordered the Lasagna, the Carbonara for our mains, and the Bruschetta to start. All of it was under seasoned. To start, the Lasagna was a bit of a soupy, bland mess with barely any flavor or structural integrity. The Carbonara tasted like they used an alfredo sauce instead of your classic egg/parm base, and again, bland. The Bruschetta itself was decent, but the bread they served it on was definitively old and stale. The owner cares about his customers a lot and he's incredibly hospitable, but please, at the very least, just add salt to the dishes! read more

I had so many questions about different dishes, that I was unfamiliar with, and he answered everything so nicely & patiently and it felt so genuine. Just moved to the neighborhood and was craving Italian. This place had the highest reviews so I called and asked what the wait time was for two (it was Friday night at 7:30p), the owner answered and affectionately said "no wait my friend, I waiting for you!" Immediately sold. Got there, seated immediately, freshly baked bread and olive tapenade delivered to the table. Service was immaculate, owner is super friendly, jovial, and you can just tell he loves what he does. But the food... the FOOD my friends. I got the Gnocchi Boccaccio and it was delicious. Came out hot and was given fresh Parmesan table side. My partner got the tortellini and added chicken, also flawless. The tiramisu at the end was divine; not too sweet and very light. We dropped off our daughters to Hollywood Bow on 8/7/24 and as we were driving home, we immediately thought about Spumoni's delicious food. We were greeted warmly and got seated right away. Valsik the owner is always kind, friendly and has the most amazing personality. He is warm, polite and welcoming. He treats everyone like family! He remembers everyone and exemplifies the true meaning of customer service. The ambiance is very relaxing and homey like going to a family's home for dinner in Italy. They have a large space for large groups and they offer parking in the back. Wish we loved close by so we can dine here all the time. This may have become my top Italian restaurant in Sherman Oaks! I've always seen this place and have never come; I'm happy I finally did. Note - "Hard Particles" at the top of the menu, it means pits in the olives. Small parking lot in the back or meter street parking (although fills up very quickly). The owner is always there to greet you (as the other reviews have mentioned). He's so sweet, very soft spoken. I felt bad I couldn't hear him too clearly! We got the Greek Salad, Spaghetti Portofino (Shrimp with pink sauce), and Gnocchi Boccaccio (Chicken, Broccoli, and Sundried Tomatoes with pesto sauce). The Greek Salad - the olives are SUPER strong, so if you hate olives, I don't recommend. Good thing we love 'em! Both our pasta dishes came out PIPPING hot! So fresh. The shrimp in the Spaghetti Portofino I thought was a LITTLE overdone, probably because the dish was so hot still after it was cooked. The Gnocchi was delicious - so squishy and love the pesto flavors. Both pastas were extremely creamy as well. They brought out a complimentary slice of Tiramisu and that was delicious, it was a bit on the sweeter side though. We'll definitely be back! read more
