Found this place merely by happenstance, since we had to drop our pooch off around the street for a grooming and wanted to grab a breakfast bite before heading to the Prahran Market. 8a Saturday morn is relatively quiet in Prahran, and the Speakeasy has a very inviting front and menu that lured us in. You can sit alfresco on Chapel, or inside, emerging into an open courtyard out back. The whole layout is surprisingly quite expansive once you get through to the back area and courtyard. And, too, there's a graffiti-muraled alleyway directly off of Commercial, where patrons with dogs can come through and enjoy the courtyard. Fantastic, I say!! The early morn staff couldn't be friendlier or more welcoming. A great way to start off one's day! The caffeine craving was kicking in, so a couple of "long blacks" (that's Aussie for a shot of espresso with a bit of hot water) quenched the thirst. I went with the Spanish-style chorizo baked beans with baked egg and crumbled feta, that was served with a couple of slices of rustic toast ($17). (My partner went with the crushed avocado and feta with cracked pepper and lime on toast with a poached egg ($16.50; $14 without the egg).) Initially, I thought my order of the baked beans was a bit on the small side. However, as it turned out, those beans sure do expand in one's stomach, and I wasn't able to finish the entire bowl -- almost, but not quite.... (I would've popped if I had those last few bites!) The beans had a wonderful crusty top layer that jibed well with the spiciness from the chorizo and creaminess of the feta. Atop the rustic toast, it was a winner! (The avo/feta toast looked fine, too, but didn't have the much-favored "rocket" (arugula) that I've seen at other restaurants.) Our waiter, Joel, couldn't have been friendlier. Both the lunch and dinner menu selections looked great, too. (Joel said the dinner menu is more tapas-like, with people usually ordering dishes to share. There was single-order dishes, as well.) Overall, we both thought we'd made a terrific discovery in this area where the blocks are literally lined with restaurants of practically every kind of cultural cuisine! Without doubt, we'll be back to try out more of the Speakeasy Kitchen Bar real soon...!

The staff at this tremendous French Bistro have managed to really capture the essence of French dining and cooking and made it all available to patrons on Toorak Road. Upon walking through the doors of A La Bouffe you are greeted by a large marble bar downstairs and private more intimate seating upstairs. The whole venue is very elegant and light making for a classy and relaxing atmosphere. I came to A La Bouffe for dinner and was thoroughly impressed; I ordered the Salade De Saumon Fume as entree. This was Smoked Salmon Salad with a Citrus and Dill dressing; very light, fragrant and not to mention tasty. For my main I decided on the Coq Au Vin - Boneless chicken marinated red wine, mushroom and bacon sauce with mash potatoes on the side. Terrific! Washed it all down with a very smooth glass of Shiraz, needless to say I slept like a baby after this meal. A La Bouffe is a perfect French dining experience right in the heart of South Yarra, perfect for lunch or dinner or even a cheeky glass of vins rouge.

There's also parking at the Como across the street, which is pretty handy. Walking in, you can't help but feel drawn into this relaxing and intimate atmosphere. It's perfect for a date (well a very expensive date!) or to enjoy a beautiful dinner service with close friends. I loved it from the moment I walked past the front door. The bar is also a nice touch and it gives you the option of grabbing a seat and having a drink while waiting for your table if it's busy. The staff are amazing, the ones who looked after us were all French which contributed to the whole experience. They are really nice, welcoming and took time in running us through the menu as well as the wine list. Seriously, everything on the menu looks good. We had the escargot and terrine for entree and they were really nice. For the main, we went with the lobster ravioli et crevette and the coq au vin - wow! Just wow! We were quite full after that but, credit to us, we soldiered on and had the mousse au chocolat and creme brulee a la lavende - Oh mon dieu...... C'etait pas croyable! It was as orgasmic as you'd get..... We had such a great time and were the last ones to leave I think but they never pressured us to go and were very accomodating all the way. This place is a must-try! I will definitely return and I can't wait to go back. Make sure you book first - great places like this fill up pretty quickly.

You get a piece of paper and cross of whatever you like on it - easy way to order. The menu points out the gf and vegan options too. The waitress was amazing and helped us out with what to pick because we were so overwhelmed with the choice. We settled for rice paper rolls with avocado omlettes (omg), deep fried spring rolls (yum), papaya salad (OMFG best thing ever) and salmon with quinoa rice (hmmm). Needless to say the food has a twist to it and it is not a fine dining place. So you may sit tight and you may stink of fried food, but it will be damn worth it.

It's jammed almost day and night, so with a new venue comes more seating and a dedicated bar to pump out those coconut crushes that everyone loves, along with a selection of special cocktails. A smart move from Miss Chu, though I'd question the sensibility of having the kitchen of the new store so close to the front which seems to create a bottleneck of people in and out. Oh, and I'm so confused about the service system here - sometimes I have to order at one of the counters and other times at my table. Sometimes I pay before my meal and other times after which results in unpleasantly getting caught up in that bottle neck at the door! Staff sometimes seem just as confused as I am, the floor layout clearly slowing down service and movement when they're delivering dishes. Confusion aside, the menu is terrific and the food is as good as ever. I love that the crepes are a permanent feature here - please try the prawn and ginger sometime and don't bother trying to eat it with chopsticks as you need a spoon to enjoy all the juices in the bottom of the bowl. I love that you can order ahead with the app and swing in for some rice paper rolls when on the run.
