Avocado (housing unaffordability) and chickpea puree (hummus to the plebs) and a Poached egg
    Sam K.

A business breakfast brought me to the Speakeasy two weeks in a row. The meeting not so good but the venue isn't bad. Long and skinny, with a galley kitchen in the middle and the coffee machines at the front, we ordered and headed upstairs to a good sized function space. It seems to go on and on with a whole rear area and courtyard which I didn't explore truth be told. The staff are efficient, friendly and helpful especially with the large number of orders they serve up at once. The first time I had bacon and a fried egg with a latte, and a chai chaser. It was, well adequate. Today I opted for the Avo and chick pea puree ( known by most people as hummus I would have thought!). It came with a poached egg plus was sprinkled with surprises including goji berries and mint leaves and pepitas which really added something to both texture and overall flavour combos. It was a much better value for money dish. I've got to say I wouldn't rush there, but it was pretty good. I'm not a fan of the Prahran/South Yarra vibe but this place was pretty good. I'd definitely consider the function space too for future events. Overall, yeah give it a crack but just rein in expectations that it's not going to change your life and you'll probably be more than satisfied.

    Best coffee!!

I randomly went to this place with a group of friends being told about the outdoor courtyard. Upon getting there we were greeted by our host who seated us in the before mentioned courtyard. We were there for a midday breakfast and the big breakthrough I was served was delicious. I especially liked the house made baked beans and the scrambled eggs which were extra creamy. YUM! I ended up exiting via the back alley which had some interesting street art. ;-). Worth checking out if you're in the vicinity.

    The speakeasy burger!

I love this place, it's in a great location, there layout and decor is vibrant, fresh and modern, it's got a courtyard (perfect on a warm sunny day), the staff are nice and they do a great burger! We'd just had coffee at Market Lane and were looking for a place to grab some lunch so I took out my phone, brought up Yelp (of course!) and.... well the rest is history. The burger was so good (for those of youse who know me, you'd be aware of how much I love a great burger).. They serve it on a chopping board (now I don't know about you but I love when my meal is served on a chopping board.. I find it really cool) and you get fries with a bit of tomato sauce. It was a good burger - meat to bun ratio was spot on, juicy patty, fresh ingredients and the fries were done to perfection. This place is a lot more than just a great burger though. They have a full bar, a comprehensive menu, serve, brekkie, brunch, lunch and dinner as well as offer their clientele a private dining area for functions. I shall return....

Continuing on the quest to try as many places to eat breakfast at, I found myself here at Speakeasy this morning. That urge for pancakes had struck again so I was pleased when I saw the Lemon & Ricotta Pancake stack and my friend chose to eat the Brekky toast with bacon, caramelised onion and tomato slices with barbecue sauce. Coffee was delicious, loved it. I did like my pancakes but thought they were drenched in raspberry sauce and couldn't really find any ricotta in the dish, but still nice. Overall was pleased with the service and meals also get a Kobie D approval.

There's a lot to like about Speakeasy... great fitout, helpful and attentive staff, and I suspect a great place to set up shop on a Saturday afternoon when the weather is nice and let the party come to you. As the new kid on the Chapel street block however, Speakeasy may have a little ironing out to do. The coffee is acquired from the much-acclaimed Dukes (just a little further down the street) so it should be good, but it's average at best. The food too, is fine but not great. With all the hallmarks of a place that will become one of Melbourne's best, I'd absolutely make a return trip... but maybe wait a while for other people to be their guinea pigs first.

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.

Even the ordering is eclectic as you order electronically (QR) pasted to a library book. This place is worth a visit.

Entering the restaurant, there was the must incredible smell and while possibly heightened because of my hunger, I'm sure it would have smelled as delicious even if I weren't hungry at all. We sat down and immediately realised that the other reviews are right when they mention how loud it is in here. Big floor to ceiling windows and concrete floors don't do much to absorb the sound, so you might need to preserve your voice until you arrive, so you can yell over to the people you're dinning with. The table was very narrow and hard to fit in drinks and water and phones and cutlery and plates etc, but we managed eventually. The food came out really quickly and was presented beautifully. The salmon entree was superb and light, fresh and delicious. Really good. When the main came out, I was a little disappointed. The Fish 'n Chips were great tasting, but there was SO much salt coating it all, that I had to leave a big chunk of it (and remember, I'm still hungry at this point). The batter tasted good, but it was dense and doughy. The fish inside was beautifully cooked and white. Dessert didn't disappoint. Not only was it also very pretty on the plate, but perfect on the palate. I asked for an ice cream flavour substitution and they obliged correctly. It was a delicious chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream and freeze dried strawberries. So yum. The service here was pretty much spot on as well. Our waitress was friendly and nice, and when my companion didn't like their dessert, she offered another at no charge, or to have it removed from the bill. Everyone was accomodating and happy. The negatives were ... Expensive parking. There's plenty of parking, but for two hours, it cost $12. The food is a bit on the pricey side, but that's why you come here for an occasion. The acoustics aren't great. When I say it's noisy, I mean it sincerely. It's loud. But the view of the water is gorgeous and the decor is nice, and overall I must say I will DEFINITELY come back again to try other menu items (and maybe try it for breakfast one day).

Welcome back the auburn hotel _ established in 1888 - with a little break here and there. As a semi regular - I've watched the slow transformation of the auburn including the menu over the past 12 months to a shorter and sharper offering. Shorter and I think sadly a little too pricey for what it delivers. The real change has been the overhaul of the back room from a grimy pub to a refined dining space. The courtyard area has been doubled and is now a really inviting area with communal benches, mod grass and umbrellas. It's actually s place you want to hang out at now for a sneaky drink. I've been suitably impressed by the impression that the auburn delivers. But... There is still an annoying thing that remain from the Geebung days - e.g. Ordering times - way too long to deliver something like a basic Parma. Previously there used to be "special nights" to entice the locals in - these are all gone with the exception of Tuesday steak night. A little disappointing to be honest as the menu pricing for anything other than a ladies Parma is too rich for most people to go to most nights or on a whim - which is what was great about specials nights. I like what the auburn is trying to achieve. I like the atmosphere they are trying to curate. I (mostly) like the simplified menu but I think they've missed the point of a lovely local when it comes to pricing (9.50 for a side green salad anybody?) and this really needs to be addressed to make it the wonderful local that we will all frequent. 4 for vibe - 2 for menu/pricing. Overall 3 - just. Because I can't do a half star and that pricing is not feeling right to me.
