Ordered from SPUD Vancouver Island for 5 years, then SPUD Calgary when I returned home to this city. After 2 years of issues in Calgary with quality, missing items, expired or soon to be expired items, I decided to quit when SPUD would only issue a 50% refund on a bag of dried out coffee beans that expired in 11 days. They no longer accepted unopened returns, a policy continued after the Covid pandemic. Bad quality items required some photos and an assessment for credit. First time using SPUD during the COVID-19 pandemic. There's a record number of people using the service, so there were some items I wasn't able to get in the end. However, what I did receive was top-notch. Kale, cucumbers, carrots, lemons, apples, limes and mixed mushrooms looked bigger and fresher than what I usually get. I ordered some chicken thighs, ground pork and farm eggs too. For what I paid and received, I was happy and would use SPUD again. Prices are reasonable. However, stuff like yogurt, butter, canned goods, snacks, and milk are significantly higher than your local non-organic grocery store. read more

I thought that I wrote a review for Spud, but I only discussed it in a conversation thread. Spud really deserves a shout out, so here goes! My first order came last Thursday...my second order came last night. Let me say, I LOVE everything about this concept, the food is fabulous and fresh; I've had the same Spud rep deliver the past 2 Thursdays and he is such a pleasant guy. Some people worry about the price, but I honestly think it's not that much - especially considering that you get fresh organic groceries delivered to your door (free of charge for orders over $35). Man, I hate grocery shopping; this is perfect for me. My stellar math skills show me that I could spend $160/month at Spud and have most of my produce + some other items for the month based on my family of 2 adults and 1 three year old. For meat, dairy, and misc. items, I'm still buying at other grocery retailers to save on cost. It's those items I find pricier, but they do have sales and I'll be keeping my eyes out for those. Already I am feeling healthier for this decision. Our family of three has been eating almost entirely veggies, fruits, and home-cooked meals. I've found Spud useful in the past if either I can't find something in a local store, or if I want to order a larger quantity of fruit or vegetables than I can easily get home, for example when juicing. If you don't mind paying premium prices and shopping sensibly (their products are anywhere from 20-100% more expensive depending on the item and where you shop) it's a decent option. I have found the quality of their produce to be largely good, although I have had to twice contact them for refunds on things that weren't good. They have a good selection of fruit, vegetables and snack foods, but limited selection for other things (for example they don't sell bulk foods). Other than that, It's somewhat frustrating that they don't provide prices per weight on a lot of their products - you'll see things like 3 apples for $5, which obviously is hard to compare to a bag of apples sold by weight. read more

The driver parks in the driving lane on the wrong side of the road forcing traffic to cross into the oncoming lane to pass, all while there is a plethora of parking available on his correct side of the street. I really liked the idea of this company - and they aren't all that bad. So long as you don't always expect to get what you order. I've ordered a total of maybe six times with them, and every time they either forget something, put something different in, or what have you. It's frustrating. They have a good service, and they deliver to your door, but sometimes I wonder -- I ordered a 'juicing' box and they put in yams? Who has ever juiced a yam? This past time, I said "Hey, there's been a bunch of errors, can we fix that" and they replicated a similar error as they had before. I wondered if it was a joke... and then I hated the fact I was turning into one of those people, "I said CURLY parsley". Jeebus. Anyhew, after trying them out over the past year and a half or so, I think I'm going to stick to going to the grocery store. We've been ordering this for a couple of years now and it's been awesome. Everything is organic which is important with my kidney issues. All our produce is the best possible because it's hand picked for our order. Colin loves the habanero sausages and the lamb souvlaki. My favorites are the scallops and the blood oranges when they are in season. The pre made meals are off and on but they are not made by spud. If you don't like something or a mistake was made by spud on your order just let them know and they will find a way to make up for it. As I am sick with a kidney disorder I often can't leave the house for days or even weeks at a time. Having spud deliver food every weeks means that no matter what we always have fresh food. This is a great service for sick, injured or just plain busy people. read more

I have ordered from Spud at least a dozen times. At first my orders were great, and sometimes extra items where thrown in at no extra cost. Then I started receiving produce that was damaged, and items missing. I stopped ordering for awhile and then decided to give Spud another try, well same thing happened. Well I got a juicer for Chistmas and I've set a resolution to use it a lot and that means LOTS and LOTS of produce. Although I've known about SPUD for a while, I never really considered using them until I got faced with the realities of buying and hauling that all home. I have yet to take advantage of standing orders (which I imagine save tons of time but I don't have a juicing groove on yet) and I like the systems they have with reward points and such and I'm already close to getting $10 off with those! I kind of wish they delivered twice a week though - as I'm worried about ordering a week's worth of produce from both the perspective of storage space and the perspective of spoilage. As weeks pass I'll have to evaluate if I can keep my produce the whole week of if I need to supplement my groceries with spud rather than replace. read more

I recently bought a new juicer to aid in my quest to health & fitness in 2014. At first I was buying all of the produce at the grocery store, but stumbled over a SPUD coupon online and decided to try out the service. Wow.. I am a new SPUD customer and am so pleased!! A 20 dollar discount on the first order tempted me to try them and am so glad I did! They are sometimes cheaper or otherwise comparable to other stores when it comes to organic, non-dairy options, gluten free etc. They have sale items every week. They have an automatic rewards point program so you will earn points that add up to a 10 dollar discount - nice! :-) They carry some unique products that are worth checking out. I love the time I have saved shopping at at other stores. I still shop at other places for certain things but it is a lot more pleasant not needing to buy as much. So.. I don't like shopping for groceries unless they are in some open market on a beautiful day... and i'm not hungry already.. I don't want all the processed foods on the shelves.. I don't even like the lighting in a grocery store. I have been using SPUD delivery for around a year now. I cannot say enough good things about them. They carry all tasty and healthy options for me, Prepared foods don't equal "processed foods" with SPUD. They have access to brands i would have to hunt for or would never know about in the big grocery stores. Really quality local brands.. you feel like you're buying from the farmer up the road. the food has flavour.... some might mark this review as pricey but i see SPUD as moderately priced considering the time and money it would cost me to go find this stuff all over town myself. Also, I can change my online order pretty close to the delivery/order deadline... there have been very very few things i wanted to buy that they didn't have.. and best of all.. they deliver ... weekly.. i mean wow.. i have been in that nasty grocery store lighting maybe a hand full of times since SPUD came into my life .. Spud is great company, with an awesome concept, service and product. It's not perfect but i feel their efforts and service is honest and loyal. I have been shorted shipped some items that received credit, but its never been an issue to receive the credit ect.... I made my first order this past week May 2020, so I had no prior experience. Although they were quick to deliver, I really liked having it delivered, it showed up nicely packed in boxes, they had everything I ordered except for 2 things, so all positive things. My bill was approximately $600, when I got the food I was quite disappointed. It was really expensive and for what I received was a letdown. Everything was small, small bags of food, small produce, small portions, small loaf of bread. It just seemed unbelievable for the amount I had spent. The quality of their product used to be good, but now you can do better from the distress counter in the produce department of any big grocery store. Maybe that is where they are doing the buying. Maybe they switched buyers. Quality is sometimes unforgivably poor. Sure, they have a money back guarantee, but they abuse this by using the customer as their Quality Control department. I have been a Spud customer for over five years and I get so frustrated with the hit or miss quality of the produce and service. Often times the warehouse is short and it's not uncommon to find things missing from the box, like the chicken fingers I was hoping to have for dinner tonight. Or they just leave it out completely. I have been using SPUD for over a year now. When I first started using SPUD, I was blown away with their fantastic products, especially their produce. Opening my SPUD box was like healthy christmas! This winter, I started to see a decline in their produce and overall customer experience. First, my produce started to show up a little battered, then my boxes wouldn't be picked up. However, I called and they issues a refund and everything felt okay. Fast forward to my last few orders... My produce has been poor. Very poor. My fruit has been bruised and old. My apples were mealy, my pears looked dehydrated. My greens have been okay, but have wilted within 2 days in my house. My beets actually showed up and 2 of them were soft and had mould spots. I appreciate that Spud has a great refund policy, but I would like to be able to enjoy the produce that I am buying. Maybe this is because SPUD has grown too quickly, maybe it is becuase I have bad luck, but either way, I miss the Spud of 2012. I keep saying that I am going to quit using SPUD for a little while, however the refunds are issued against future orders, so I keep going back to use my refunds. read more

Having recently had a baby, I have had a difficult time getting out of the house for things like shopping. SPUD is a saving grace! I can order online throughout the week, anytime, and when my order arrives, I don't have to be available to rush to the door, it just gets dropped off. I received a gift card for Christmas and until then, never planned on ordering again. I received my order, the eggs had less than a week before expiry, 75% of the fruit, mostly apples were rotten on the inside. Basically $100.00 down the drain. I've learned my lesson. Pros and cons. I love the variety they offer. Also, grocery delivery is great for those with limited time or mobility so it's wonderful such services exist. I LOVE that they source items from small vendors in Calgary, so I get access to local shops without driving all over the city. I've discovered many shops I otherwise would not have. That's a stellar concept and the #1 benefit of SPUD over other services. You pay a markup compared to going to the vendor directly, but it's usually reasonable and offset by the fact that you don't have to drive all over -- except where produce is concerned. SPUD fruit and veg is priced much higher than stores, and I'm talking Planet Organic or Community Natural. The quality is sometimes great, sometimes so so. The prices on their juicing cleanse packs are absurd: a flat $10 per glass of juice produced (so a 5 day cleanse box that is expected to provide 5 glasses of juice a day is $250) and that is a set rate no matter how much you buy or what the market prices are. It's cheaper to go to Well Juicery and buy their fresh cold press juice directly -- how does that make sense? I'm very price tolerant when it comes to organic and local food, but I'm shopping around for juicing and coming out at less than $5 a glass. Not a small difference. Another issue lately is that my eggs and milk are too close to the best before date, and I pour out a lot of spoiled dairy. They have, however, corrected the issue with late Friday deliveries -- at least in my area. Basically, between the short dating of dairy and the produce pricing I'm buying only about a third as much from SPUD as I used to and I'm getting all my produce elsewhere. It's hard to say if SPUD would be making more money from me if they lowered their prices and I bought more -- that's for their business manager to figure out. If you don't have pricing concerns, then this is a great place to shop. I wanted to do a review to promote their great selection of products from local food vendors. One thing to watch for is their freezer packs of organic meat; not cheap, but great quality free range meat and the bulk buy makes it a reasonable deal. I will continue to buy those when available. read more

Spud.ca is an online grocery store that delivers organic food to your doorstep. They have excellent local veggies and bread, but the entire store is way too damn expensive. For example, this week they have: garlic - $3/head (yes, just one!) red pepper - $3.50/each tomatoes - $4.60/pound carrots - $3.50/pound bread - $7/loaf This week I bought a small stash of produce, plus milk, eggs and sausage, and paid $50. Three days later, everything's gone except for the eggs, and I'm hungry! I have a referral code that's worth $5 off the first 3 orders and $10 off the fourth one, which I used for a few deliveries while I was sick and unable to make it to a supermarket. I'm grateful that Spud kept me from living on noodles and rice during that time, but let me tell you, I won't keep ordering after the discount runs out. read more

There are several things wrong with this company. -unreliable delivery time. One week my delivery came around 9 pm, one week it came in the afternoon. -terrible customer service when they screw up your order and an incompetency at understanding their errors or customer's issues, and unable to quickly and efficiently solve the problem. -their online ordering system doesn't know when to accept or reject coupon codes, and thus overcharges the customer. -extremely expensive -very limited product selection compared to natural/organic grocery stores in the area. Their customer service is fine until they screw up your order, which is really the only point when you actually need customer service. The first time, my order was fine and as expected. Then when they messed up my charges the next two times, they became rude and unhelpful and sent me in circles between their staff. Given that they're an online business you'd think they'd have mastered the art of processing online orders. However, twice in a row, they accepted coupon codes and then overcharged me by $20 on my invoice/credit card. It took me weeks to resolve the issue the first time and I'm still trying to resolve the second weeks problem - have emailed, called 3 times and was told I'd get a call back to no avail. Utterly useless and unhelpful. Will not order from them again and would not recommend. read more

Didn't work for me. Tried again after a couple of years, but still the same. Super pricy, and only works if you don't actually need a certain amount of food (better for singles than families). Sent me half the amount of chicken I ordered. Very expensive. Only received 1 breast and the cost was $12. The same chicken from the same farm is available at Safeway for half that price. Grapes look nice, none spoiled, but came all the way from Mexico (even though CA grapes should be available now) and the 30 grapes I received ran me $6.99. read more

I started with SPUD in September hoping to purchase local product that was organic and fresh, as SPUD boasts. I had several returns for poor quality produce, rotten strawberries, rotten oranges, rotten pears, and over-ripe kale, tomatoes, and other vegetables that barely lasted a day or two upon receipt. The worst part of this was the deposits for renting their bins. Getting my money back for bin rentals has been a constant struggle. I have had to request credit for my bins on five separate occasions since mid-September. I am still trying to get all of my bin deposits back from SPUD and once I do, I am out. read more

My experience with Spud has been really fantastic. I used their coupon they offered online. They have a Holistic Nutritionist on staff who took the time to call and welcome me personally. She has gone above and beyond in accommodating my requests and always very prompt in responding to my emails. The organic produce has been consistently fresher than most grocery stores I normally shop at. I like to make my own apple sauce, and they often offer sales on really fresh apples. I love the great variety of produce available! Most delicious kefir I have ever had! How fabulous is it all to have it delivered to your door? Great concept executed very well.
