I pretty much flipped out at this place. Was in town visiting family and decided I needed some proper Hispanic fixings from a nearby market that specialized in such things. On the way there, I notice this corner store only a few blocks away from my intended destination. Also had a list of grocery items I wanted to create for those folks I was visiting and was dreading having to drive all over town to find them. I suspected the Italian Supermarket might fill the bill in part. And how! Not in part, but I found everything I was looking for. Wow, I wish a place like this existed in my part of the country. I found every single item which included: *great* pizza pans, semolina flour, Italian sausage (for making my custom red sauce), a few cans of high quality tomatoes I was unfamiliar with but turned out to be superb, a pound of Italian dark roast coffee for the airbnb French press pot, fennel seed and... and... a bunch more stuff I can no longer recall. And now you probably get what I'm doing here: cooking for the kid I raised who wanted that home experience from the midwest U.S. in Calgary. Wow, this place is loaded with *everything* Italian you might be looking for and more. That such a market exists here sort of floored me in a good way, and I promise every visit here I'll be returning to further explore their offerings. The scrappy cousin amongst the Italian markets in town, what this place lacks in style is compensated for with product selection. I go here occasionally to buy anchovy paste, marzipan, dried mushrooms, and other hard to find foodstuffs. While it does not have the bakery and espresso bar that Lina's does, I HIGHLY suggest going here on a Sunday. On Sunday only, they fire up the wood-burning oven and serve up really good pizza. It's thin crust, but packed with WAY more toppings than you'd normally get on a Neapolitan style pie. It's the best of both worlds, and they don't compromise on quality, with the delicious 4 meats pizza optionally topped with whatever veggies you want for a reasonable $15.99. I stopped in here for the first time as I was going by to get some pizza dough for family pizza night and ended up picking up a few extra things to try, all turned out great with good prices, most of my extra pickups were due to Cindy behind the meat counter, very friendly and knowledgeable, a true asset to sales. You better believe the "super" part of the Italian Supermarket name, cuz that is indeed the case. Super selection, and super extras, which only serve to enhance the allure of the place. For my purposes, "extras" means unexpected. Firstly, I did not expect there to be an espresso bar at the front of the market, with a half dozen tables or so to sit and sip at. Secondly, I definitely did not expect to find a traditional wood-burning oven onsite. It turns out that they serve homemade pizzas, but only on Saturdays, and only till 4pm. It's a narrow window of opportunity for sure, but one I plan on slithering through myself. If it tastes nearly as good as the pictures I saw, it's bound to deliver! Thirdly, I sure didn't expect to find that the supermarket serves up hot lunches from Monday to Saturday, 10:30-3:00, with an ever-changing menu, all made fresh in store by someone named "Nonna Filomena". There's a picture of her in the market, and while I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, that lady just looked like she could cook! All these extras, plus a full sized grocery store with everything you'd find at the Safeway, if you were in Italy. read more

Wow! I've lived in Calgary for 13 years and never knew about this place. Having grown up in an Italian community, I have always found it difficult to find good Italian food at a reasonable price in Calgary. I have found that and more at Italian Supermarket. Their pizza is to die for! Their lasagna and veal parm were absolutely delicious. They have fresh Italian sausage made in house so I picked up a few of those-just finished cooking in my cast iron and it was devoured within 2 minutes. Highly recommend this place if you're in the mood for Italian and it won't break the bank. This is my new go-to spot! read more

Lots of selection, good deli, fresh donuts are AMAZING, seriously so is the pizza, unless you prefer the big chain offerings. (nothing wrong with that, just a matter of taste). The Italian Supermarket is like a mini Italian village at lunch times. This is my favourite place for cold cuts & cheese and anything italian. The prices are reasonable and the service friendly. There is now a little cafe that has expanded from about 4 tables to double the amount and the hot food and dessert selections have much larger display cases. There is always about 4-5 selections for hot entrees that change daily. You can have entree and a side for $10.95 or add pasta for $12.95. You can get anything from osso bucco to eggplant lasagna depending on the daily menu. I've had veal cutlets and meat loaf as well as chicken parmigiana on different occasions. The pizza is a popular item but it takes a while as it is baked fresh in their oven which can only fit at most 2 pizzas at a time. The cold cuts are some of the best and they are happy to offer you a sample to help you decide. From dried pasta to olive oil and balsamic vinegar or grape juice to make your own wine, you can get all the fixings you need for a truly authentic italian meal right here. read more

This is a true hidden gem of Calgary... especially for us imports. Awesome selection of imported goods and meats from back home. There's a couple of things some of you may not know... You can get sandwiches from the back counter that are to die for.... and this is the best secret of all.... on saturdays between noon to about 2PM, they make pizzas in the wood fired oven. This is my second time here on a weekday. They always have a wide selection of dried pasta (regular egg pasta as well as spelt and eggless pasta), deli meats (and ready made subs) and cheeses. The deli staff are very knowledgeable and helpful! I was able to find a few varieties of salami to pair with Asiago cheese and Moscato. Nom, nom..... There is also fresh focaccia baked daily and pizza made to order in an al forno oven. Speaking of ovens, the special feature of the day is a pizza oven for only $350! read more

Very disappointing. Went in for some deli meat, lady behind counter touched her hair, then put a glove on one hand then grabbec the mortadella with her ungloved hand! When I mentioned this to the lady at the till it did not seem to be a big deal. I went elsewhere for my deli meat where it is bright and the staff wears a glove on each hand. read more

The good thing is that they have a wide selection. But my experience has been horrible. A lot of the packaged food is often expired (just check for yourself). Simply the best little Italian supermarket in Calgary. Prices are sometimes a little high especially for cheeses and cold cuts, but you are not at Super-Store here, the quality is excellent and the service is the best. I found some of my favourite italian cheeses there, and some I didn't even know about, and I am Italian! On weekends, their pizza is to die for, and so is the home-made bacala, almost as good as my grand-mother's. The best part about eating there is that you are often surrounded by first-generation nonnos and nonnas and their Canadian offsprings with their own kids, not your typical downtown yuppy crowd. Nice enough store with good products and lunch counter/pizza oven. However, cleanliness is questionable. The biggest problem I have with this place is the owner - He does not appear very nice, or appreciative of his customers. Most of all I have seen him be mean to his employees. I much prefer giving my business to The Italian store by the air port and the new Italian Center shop in the south. read more
