One stop shop, almost…read more.. I visited this place because I needed to reserve a city park shelter in Chesapeake. To be exact, Northwest River Park. Well out of the several parks located in Chesapeake, this park is the only one that does the reservation on their own. Bummer... Well while I am here, I checked the place out. I didn't take pictures because I felt like I was going to get in trouble or something. The set up reminded me of a museum in which one needed to be still and to keep your hands to yourself. Well that's the feeling I got. Nevertheless, there are several magazine and other publications inside. I am unsure if the city publishes them, but it was publications I had never heard of. It's pretty small inside, but it's an office so the space is equable, I loved the set up. I cannot remember the employee present on that Saturday afternoon, but she was super kind and guided me along the way... gave me the phone number/contact to reach out to the park for booking. However, all other parks in the city, one must book through this office. The office is located in the Greenbrier section of the city. I used my GPS and it wasn't hard to locate at all. If you are in the area, check it out to learn more about the City of Chesapeake. Have fun and enjoy life :)

This review is for the U.S. Postal Passport Services located at the Kempsville Post Office branch…read more The branch is right off Kempsville Rd with parking in front for the office, but parking for passport is to the side. Customers will need to drive in back to enter. The lot is huge and signage is over the door. Of note this is the only passport service on the Southside. Appointments are highly recommended, but when slow they will take walk-in. Customers can compete forms online or in person. Check or debit card appear to be the only two forms of payment. Cash was not discussed however. There is plenty of seating as the area is spacious. Two agents were working and luckily caught at a slow weekday. The wait was short, the process easy and the customer service exceptional. My daughter who is 18 will have her passport in around six weeks. She also opted for a second form of ID the passport card. It's the size of a drivers license. It's somewhat newer. You can bring your own photo of official size, or opt for the agent to take. If picky bring your own, the photo for my daughter came out extremely light. My experiences with the post office have been average to weak, so this is a huge bump in confidence for the U.S. Postal Service. Also of mention for those that need documentation they can obtain online through Vital Check. I requested a Yelp edit to add passport services. Full 5 stars.

There are a number of monuments and memorials here and of course, you can walk over and watch the Great Bridge Bridge open and close if you're fortunate. One highlight is the obelisk commemorating the Battle of Great Bridge. It is a tribute to the Patriot soldiers who fought and died in one of Virginia's earliest Revolutionary War victories. It is a classic granite shaft, inscribed with tributes to the men who helped drive British forces from the colony on December 9, 1775. If you're able, tour the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Museum. Lots of history on the Colonial Era and the brief but decisive clash that marked a turning point: colonial forces routed British troops under Lord Dunmore, effectively ending royal control in Virginia and forcing the British to retreat to Norfolk. In the front you will find a concrete path with information along the way. The path away from the water has been Newley done with concrete used to be gravel. It's a very nice walk and sand at the end with water. Just don't forget some bug spray! And watch for snakes. Also in the front past the building you can find lots of picnic tables to have some hangout time or some lunch. It's in a perfect location lots of places to grab food near and drive to sit and eat.

Tax maps. TAX MAPS!! They have huge books with every property in the city for your to browse!…read more O.K., I know I'm tweeking out on nerdiness here but there are more people like me! I swear!! So I had to find property ownership of a vacant lot for my job - let's just say I am a contract manager. I called the city assessor and the sassy lady on the other end told me 'she couldn't look on the map for me that I needed to come look at the map.' Well, I was taken aback by her tone at the time but as my experience developed, so did my understanding of the sassy lady talk. She told me it was on the 4th floor and that they are open until 5. Parking is dumb at Chesapeake City Hall; the lot is like over to the left of the building and sort of behind it and - anyway it way it was dumb. So I walked into the shiny glass fortress and into the elevator. I mashed the #4 button and was dropped off on the 6th floor somehow (??). (If you go to this building, I highly recommend this mistake - the 6th floor lobby is drop. dead. gorgeous. It looks like James Bond's house if he was in the movie Minority Report.) I was intercepted by this lovely woman with long curly brown hair - she informed me that I was on the 6th floor which houses the mayor and the city manager's office. I explained that I had mashed the button for the 4th floor but somehow ended there - she said "was it the other one? It's broken. These elevators are always gettin' fixed." So I made it to the Real Estate

This is for the Pre-Ballet class directed by Erika Parker…read more I was very excited to find a reasonably priced class for my daughter to learn ballet. Although she is young, she is quite capable of taking direction, as I have taught her some ballet basics. Now I understand the class is filled with 3-5 year old children and some concessions have to be made for learning curves and learning styles;however, my excitement quickly faded upon arriving the first day and being informed that parents must stay outside of the room while class is being conducted. I am assuming this is in order for children to avoid distraction and various meltdowns. Yet, when it is your child's first dance class ever, you really want to see them in action. The instructor does open the doors at the end of class so that you get to see what your child has learned during class. Every class I hoped to see something new, instead all we parents ever witnessed was our children literally running in circles with a ribbon or a scarf. The last class I held my breath thinking maybe, just maybe, she will have something to show us. No. Same thing as the previous five classes. All the kids running in a big circle.I took dance classes for years and lay no claim to being able to successfully teach preschoolers to dance; however, it would have been highly appreciated if the instructor stood in front of the class, had the kids stand in line or on their dots on the floor, and demonstrate something, anything, to encourage us as parents and her students that something was actually done in class. These kids are small so when you ask them what they did in class they can't always express it. The other day I randomly heard my daughter say, "This is the naughty foot and this is the nice foot." I had to ask her if she learned that in class. "Yes," she said, That's it. That is all I know that my kid learned. I am really underwhelmed with this instructor. I thought about placing my child in the gymnastics class offered there and I changed my mind when I realized Erika would be the instructor. No where in her biography on her own website page does her background indicate any gymnastics history or experience that would warrant her the ability to properly and safely direct children. There was a recent story in the news about a young girl having paralyzed herself by doing a back bend in her own home. Proper instruction is paramount. Perhaps this is not the intention of the gymnastics class being offered, but I would be very hesitant to place my child with someone who has no gymnastics background. In the future, I would like to suggest that instructors demonstrate something for the parents to see, even if it is an "I'm a Little Teapot" routine. Especially, if parents are required to go through the effort of: purchasing the required leotards, tights, and slippers, while adhering to the no jewelry, or hair ornaments rules. If we are just going through the motions, let the parents know.

Virginia Beach Landfill & Resource Recovery Center - Different bins for recycling items. They're organized

Virginia Beach Landfill & Resource Recovery Center

How did I never know this Recycling Center existed?…read more My son has been helping me purge my house of old computers, printers, monitors, etc. They had been taking up way too much space. The weight, removal of the hard drives & bringing them downstairs had been a formidable obstacle. My son researched & found the city's recycling center which really impressed me. The location was quite convenient. From the north side of town take I-64 to the Indian River East exit then an immediate right on the road that runs in front of Regent University. Then take a right turn on Jake Sears Road. The Landfill & Recycling Center is on the right and very obvious. One immediately sees a very large version of Mount Trashmore with no landscaping. I suspect eventually it might become a similar park. At the gatehouse show your driver's license as proof of Virginia Beach residency. Entrance is free for individual but has a charge for businesses. Since we had household electronic recyclables we were instructed to go to the HHW area, which was a beehive of activity. The employees didn't offer to help since my son was there. I'm not sure if that would be the case if I went alone. They instead pointed out the various spots where the different types of electronics should be placed. It was a quite a quick instruction. So be prepared to listen closely. The organization is terrific. There are areas separated by dividers for the different products. I even saw an area closer to the open front building where the employees were located that had refrigerators. I believe that was the area where the computers were placed. Getting out of the vehicle and walking to the building I was able to learn quite a lot from my questions. The items placed on the street by residences for bulk pickup aren't taken to Recycling. They go in the dump with other trash. But 100% of what we brought on our trip will be recycled. So it's much better for the environment to bring those items to the Recycling area than to leave by the street for bulk pickup. As we circled out of the area I saw the bins where wood & other items the city considers construction debris (even though most is not) are placed. They are not allowed as a part of curbside pickup. I've struggled with what to do with these since my husband died since many won't fit in the trash bin. These bins weren't ground level. So it required hoisting the items over the top of bins similar to those behind shopping centers or businesses. This area was quite busy with what must have been commercial drop offs. Were I to struggle with getting something into the bin, I'm certain one of them would volunteer to help a Senior Citizen. Don't dare tell anyone I described myself in that fashion. :) I'm happy to know how to dispose of wood that falls apart so quickly in my backyard that faces the Chesapeake Bay a little less than a mile away. The corrosive atmosphere is a terrible destroyer of metal & wood. This was a very productive & informative visit to the Virginia Beach Recycling Center. I wish I had known the extent of it years ago. Recycle! Don't trash!

Drive up to the attendant, tell them what you are tossing, and they'll tell you where to go. As you drive to the group of trash receptacles, other attendants will guide you to your specific receptacle. The organization definitely was on point. Huge tip: Remember to bring a form of ID or a utility bill that confirms you are a Va Beach resident.
