If there was one thing I wanted to try in Switzerland, it was Sprüngli's Luxemburgerli. These are the Swiss challenger to macarons - similarly made from meringue cookies with a filling, but smaller and slightly different in flavor or texture. My best friend is French and her husband is Swiss, and they argue over whether macarons or Luxemburgerli are superior. I couldn't weigh in until I'd tried both, so I had to get my hands on some!
There are a number of Sprüngli locations across Switzerland, but I visited the one inside Bongénie Grieder Geneva. I could see the name through the window and made a beeline for the counter, which was spectacularly beautiful. Towers of Luxemburgerli everywhere, and a huge glass case that I almost fogged up with my breath. There were around a dozen flavors of Luxemburgerli, along with many varieties of chocolate and other confections. But I knew what I was there for.
The clerk who helped me was immensely friendly and fun to shop with. She helped me pick a box size (the third size, which held around 36 cookies) and filled it with an assortment of 3-4 of each of the non-alcoholic flavors - raspberry, mocha, caramel fleur de sel, hazelnut, vanilla, chocolate, mango, and two seasonal cinnamon flavors. They were all beautiful, some brightly colored and others dusted or painted with metallic shimmer. I'd gone for all non-alcoholic flavors for family members who do not enjoy alcohol, but told her to toss in one champagne flavored one for me. She put that one up on the counter on a little paper. When she went to close and weigh the box (as these cookies are sold by weight), I said, "Don't forget this one!" "That's a special gift for you," she replied. So generous! I ate it on the spot and have to say... mmmm, champagne cookie with caramelized buttery chocolate filling is one of the most luxurious and amazing things I've ever eaten. I thanked her profusely for her generosity.
She told me that my Luxemburgerli would stay good for about 3 days, which was just enough time for me to fly home the next day and have my family meet me in the airport parking lot for a handoff! The box was a simple thin cardboard box, but it amply protected the cookies for a 9-hour flight and I only had one cracked one! Everyone enjoyed them immensely. My favorite flavor (after the champagne-chocolate) was the hazelnut, which had strong and perfect hazelnut flavor and some chopped hazelnuts dusting the edges of the filling.
So... Luxemburgerli or macarons? I am expected to have an opinion now, I suppose, but my answer is a cop-out. I love them both. I've had fresh macarons at Ladurée in Paris and now these in Geneva, and they were all exceptional. Why should I have to choose, when I can eat both? read more
