The absolute best chocolate I've ever eaten. James, a…read morefellow I'd never met, accepted our invitation and showed up at a Thanksgiving dinner in rural Vermont bearing a three tiered, giant red velvet treasure box with an assortment intricately made, some wrapped, some not, -a variety so incredibly vast, it was hard to exercise any discipline. We all wanted to try everything. It was a divine gesture that has become an eternal memory: Because of the gesture; because of the superb beauty and quality of the chocolate; because no one had to be polite about taking the one piece everyone was eyeing as there were at least triples of each piece! That treasure chest of Auer Chocolates, hand carried from Geneva, was the greatest chocolate and second best gift I've ever been party to. If you're ever in Geneva or know someone coming from Geneva, you now know what to ask for! So you know my standards I also dream about a bar I was gifted from Maison Marou* Saigon; completely different but a similar perfection *https://marouchocolate.com/chocolate-range/single-origin/

You can get their chocolate almonds in a bag or boxed up (if you're gifting). I ended up getting a bag for myself. They are powder coated and aren't too sweet. They're pricey but worth it. Treat yourself!

I knew that I'd be shunned if I returned from a trip to Switzerland without chocolate! Though it…read morewas tempting to get everyone a bar of Migros budget chocolate, just to prove that even store-brand chocolate in Europe is vastly superior to US chocolate... I knew I needed to visit a legitimate chocolatier. Rohr came highly recommended as a Swiss brand, and the shop was convenient to the tram. It's a small shop (watch out if you're carrying a backpack!), but absolutely packed with gorgeous and fragrant confections. The window was filled with chocolate cauldrons and marzipan veggies, since we were visiting close to L'Escalade. I wanted to buy one so badly, but didn't think it'd make it home - it'd be a shame if I had to eat it myself. The staff was excellent, very friendly and helpful to me and my companions. I largely picked out chocolate bars because they are easy to take home without damage (though be careful taking a big stack through security - they'll look like a bomb on X-ray!) and they had fabulous flavors - dark and milk chocolate with fillings like orange, pistachio, lemon, hazelnuts, etc. They also had some extra-special bars of fancy chocolate bars, some single origin and some with special fillings. I bought a big stack! I also had to buy a few special items. I picked out a little chocolate bear, who turned out to be filled with something creamy and crunchy and chocolatey. I got some of their praline bars. I picked up a jar of caramel sauce with fleur de sel (which I plan to put on crepes). And... I bought a chocolate trash can. Yes, a trash can - Rohr is known for its "Poubelles Genevoises," which are literally cast to look like Geneva's trash cans. They have them in small individual boxes, perfect for gift-giving. Per US standards, this is very expensive chocolate. In Switzerland... it seemed to be on the average-to-expensive side. But everything I've tried so far has been excellent. And when one of the international flight crew saw my little red bag in the airport, they said, "Oooh, Rohr? That's great chocolate!" That's how you know you've chosen well.
