After months and months of not being able to get my hair done due to Covid-19 restrictions, California finally re-opened salons {with very specific protocol} and I was anxious to book my appointment at Spruce. Since the salon is located in Downtown Redwood City, there will not be any free parking as everything is metered street parking - Bring some quarters. Spruce Salon is taking every Covid-19 precaution possible - Only a limited number of stylists are allowed to work at a time {with chairs more than 6 feet apart}, each stylist is only allow to service one client at a time, both the stylist and the client must wear a mask the entire time and a temperature check is given prior to entering the salon. All of these procedures made me feel super comfortable in being in a salon again. My husband has been going to Spruce for years for his haircuts and raved about Nicole, so I decided to give her a shot when going in for a full highlight and a haircut - I am beyond thrilled to have found Nicole - She is a Hair Genius! I am a very easy going person and my hair is the one thing that I can tend to get picky about so I usually go into a salon with several pictures of what I am looking for {and as someone who previously managed salons/spas for years and years, I know this can be a stylists nightmare} - Nicole was amazing and looked through all of my pictures and I put my trust in her to see my vision - She exceeded what I was looking for 10 fold! Not only is she a stellar stylist, but she is beyond friendly and really listens to the clients needs/wants. The pricing is very comparable to other salons in the area, and in my opinion, it was less than I was looking to spend for such a great experience. This review is for Michelle Z -- the best and the kindest in the game. I've been getting my hair colored by Michelle for 2+ years now, and have followed her from salon to salon. My first visit was also my first time ever dying my hair balayage, and she was so sweet, helpful and knowledgeable throughout. She explained the entire process, allowed me to make certain decisions, but ultimately provided her professional opinion when I was indecisive. I brought her a few photos of what I envisioned, and she helped me achieve the look I wanted while letting me know what she thought. Honesty and support are so important in a stylist! I've always left feeling satisfied with my new color. Michelle is so well-rounded in her ability; she also cuts hair. On one of my visits, she told me my bangs were uneven and I sheepishly admitted that I had tried out a new salon out-of-state (where I attended school), and that I wasn't totally happy with it. As a Redwood City local who also serves the community, I have been meaning to write this for a while as I think it is important to hype up local business when they is really great! Spruce is awesome. It is in a great location, has a variety of services, great stylists, a welcoming environment, and it always has street parking. It is super clean and the whole process of booking online to payment is seamless. I love that it's so close to the downtown drag so if I want to grab a bite after my evening appointments I can walk two blocks and be at dinner or drinks. I have been going to see Katy Antonacci there for years. I was first referred to her by a friend who also has long, wavy hair. I have had some great stylists in the past who really know how to make my hair full but not frizzy and Katy is the best of the best. I literally just had the best haircut experience of my life today with Lindsay Brugioni Peterson. My general experience with haircuts is that I immediately regret any big changes. Not today!!! Here is the backstory: two days ago, I cut off 12 inches+ of my hair with another hair stylist. Although it looked OK, I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, so I decided to go back for some more chopping. Through a stroke of luck I called Spruce and was set-up with Lindsay. She truly has vision: I was able to show her some photos of hair cuts that I liked and give her information about the amount of time I spend on my hair (~5 min/ day), and she was able to make it happen, even taking into account my face shape and hair. read more

UPDATE 9/13/12 I'm changing my bad review to a good review today. Andi, the owner, contacted me immediately after my review to offer me a full refund and the opportunity to redo my highlights. I said yes to both and am very happy with the outcome. My hair is lovely now. Andi apologized profusely and also gave me a free blowdry. She also explained that all services like blowdrying were a la carte but someone should have explained it to me since I was a new client. She is extremely professional and sweet. Andi also sent me home with a deep conditioner and thanked me for letting her redo my hair. She wanted me to be happy above anything else and I appreciate that kind of thoughtfulness from a business. The fact that she contacted me and was very concerned about my experience shows me she values every client in the salon whether or not they are her direct clients. She made me see why other people rated this salon so highly. **************ORIGINAL REVIEW*************** I just left Spruce with wet hair. I guess you have to ask and pay for someone to blow dry your hair? I thought it was part of the $120 I just spent like every other salon. Sonia had another client coming in so she offered to set me up somewhere in the salon with a blowdryer and product. What??? I just ran home to blow dry it. Maybe I should've stayed and dried it because now I'm home with highlighted hair that is 3 different shades on each strand and I have a wedding to go to this evening. So my highlights...there is a light yellow at my roots, a whitish gray in the middle and then a darker yellow at the ends. The highlights I walked in there with and I really liked are now gone. All I asked was for a touch up on my existing color and some low lights. I was a last minute addition to Sonia's schedule and I felt like I was being rushed out of there instead of getting to enjoy hair appointment before a busy wedding day. I am so HAPPY! Spruce Salon has re-opened and Katy was able to get me in super quick. The new norm of social distancing, wearing a mask and all of the precautions the salon and stylist are taking makes you feel safe and comfortable getting back into the salon. My review is for Brittany I am writing the review not for the immediate result, which btw was great, but for two days after, when I washed my hair and did not style. I did a haircut and coloring (balayage I guess). She did a great job with the coloring, very talented. I get complements all the time on the color. I would definitely recommend her for coloring. The haircut though was uneven and a little bit too short. I probably was not clear about the length, so just make sure that you are clear with the length you want. But uneven hair is pretty uncommon. However, after Brittany found out that I was dissatisfied with the haircut, she contacted me and offered to correct the haircut. That is a customer service you would expect from a great professional! In general my experience was good, she is very nice and she picked the best color for me. I believe she is a very good professional. I would give it a second chance and see what happens with the haircut next time. read more

I've heard before that non-Asians don't know how to cut Asian hair but I thought I'd be ok at a positively-reviewed salon. I've learnt my lesson :-( I got a Bloomspot coupon and had my hair cut by Keri. She seems nice but she spent more time blowing my hair than cutting it. I asked for a cut/restyle but it resembles a mushroom head more than anything else. Worst haircut I've had in a while. Maybe something like what you get at a $10 store. Considering their regular prices are $50, that's really unacceptable. The worst was when she was done, there were some hairs that were sticking out. I had to point it out to her so she could even them out :-( Unprofessional. The left and right sides also looked like 2 different hairstyles so I asked her to balance them out. My husband thinks it's the worst haircut I've ever had and that it looks choppy (and not in a good way). He asked me to recut it but I'm done :-( I'll stick to the vietnamese/chinese hairstylists from now on. read more

Spruce Salon is a refreshing hip addition to the downtown Redwood City scene. All the stylists here are extremely experienced, friendly, and the salon has a no-drama feel to it. It's safe to say that your in good hands with all of the stylists who work at Spruce. I love the wooden decor and the spacious seating. The acoustics and light in the salon are top notch, like the women who work their magic here. Andi, Jody, and Sonia have all done my hair and I've never been let down. Recently, I had Sonia do my hair for an event and I was so happy with the finished product! I brought in a picture of the hair I wanted--big 60's hair to compliment my vintage dress--and Sonia delivered. Also, I really appreciated her patience with me. I'm the type of person that tells you what I want, and even give directions on exactly how I want things to be done (basically, I can be a bit abrasive and a slight bridezilla)--especially when it comes to my hair. This place is great! I had my hair done with Jody. She turned me back into a respectable looking human again after 8 months or so of no hair cut. I loved her taking the time with me to find out what my needs are and then showing me how to do it all at home on my own. Still I think it would be way cooler and less time consuming to just hire her to be at my house every morning to give me a blow dry. I dig the 30 something vibe in this place too.. all the hair dressers are cool, fresh and young and by no means do they lack in experience. Andrew the receptionist is sweet and really goes out of his way to make sure you're supported from start to finish and beyond. They are really lucky to have such great front desk support. I made an appointment here for my 14 year old soon-to-be stepson. His only "hair" experience has been at Supercuts. At 14, he's pretty interested in how the females view him, so I decided this would be a nice birthday gift for him. His stylist (that's right, they have stylists, unlike Supercuts!) was Sonia. She was great. I imagine he was pretty anxious and thought it was strange for someone other than himself to be washing his hair and touching his face. I also imagine that because Sonia was adorable that anxiety didn't last long. I'm babbling, onto the cut. She did a great job. He was so amazed at how awesome his hair looked when she finished with him that he actually wanted to go out of the house. That's HUGE for a kid who plays video games 24-7. I tried Spruce Salon for the first time this weekend and was really impressed. The salon is attractive and comfortable, with lots of magazines to read while you wait and you're offered coffee and hot tea. My stylist was running a bit behind and they offered to shampoo me and give me a hair mask while I waited. I didn't mind the short wait... time to read, drink tea, and relax during the holiday season? Sounds good to me! David was my stylist and I'll definitely be going back to him. He listened to what I wanted with my hair, gave me some ideas, and got to work. He's not a chatter, which I find to be a relief not to have to make small talk for an entire hair cut. Highlights number 2-meh, just ok, the color was a little off Highlights number 3 turned out more like a bad all-over dye job. Ashy brown and uneven, with clumps of darker color at different lengths from my scalp, the horrible color, it was hard not to cry on my way out of Spruce. The owner comped me the $40 dollar blow dry fee, but it still felt wrong to have to pay $80 for a service that ruined my hair for the next three months. read more

They call Annie Sullivan "the miracle worker", but I have to say that isn't true anymore. Katy from Spruce Salon should hold the title now. My hair STILL looks fantastic (and that's almost 2 months later). I go through hair dressers like a whore goes through ...well you know.... I usually find something I hate about my hair cut/color. Or the stylist. This time, after putting a cut/color off for about 9 months (yikes...in that time I found a gray hair), I decided to give this place a try based on a recommendation from a friend. I thought, "yeah yeah, I've heard it before you like your salon." Well this time I believed it. From the moment I called I got service. The receptionist was able to squeeze me in for an appointment over the weekend. I went in bowing my head in shame with roots down to my ears. It was time for a change. I told Katy what I wanted done and guess what....she LISTENED and she told the truth ("yeah that won't work on you, try this!"). So I let her do her thing and voila....my hair was transformed into a thing of beauty. I have never gotten so many compliments(one my hair) before in my life. And the best part is, this was days after I walked out of the salon! So Katy was able to cut/color my hair to the point where I can recreate it at home with ease. I am 50 and I was not interested- but it was a nice ego boast-thanks Keri. *My girlfriend stopped over just as I got home and her first response was: "You look younger." I could read into that but I won't. *My husband who never notices my color or cuts even stopped working and said "Wow, you look Good!" *And then a bit later when I saw my mom her response was: "Wow, You look like a young girl, who did your hair ??!!" Five stars goes to Katy! She's a genius! I have had such a rough time finding a hair dresser that I like and is conveniently located. Anyone who has blonde highlights knows how hard it is to find someone that does exceptionally good highlights but even more importantly, does what you ask. I've had hair dresser after hairdresser that will never do what I ask and have come home so frustrated after having my hair over processed or five inches cut off that I had never requested. On top of not having what I like, I also paid top dollar for! Katy on the other hand does exactly what I request every time and the color always turns out beautiful! She also does a great cut. I've been trying to grow my hair out for years now and everyone I've been going to has gone scissor happy so I've never been able to get the length I've been dreaming of. Big news! Jody, formerly of Rouge, has moved to this lovely new salon. The salon itself is big and airy and welcoming and comfortable, and parking is pretty easy (I got a spot right across the street yesterday when I made my first visit). I had some confusion about an appointment (my problem, not theirs) and the receptionist was courteous and friendly and when my phone spazzed out in the middle of the call, she called me right back. Jody continues to be the best ever hair-doer ever! I still drive from the city to see her. In addition to always giving me impeccable and super cool hair-dos, Jody always stays late to make sure I look tip-top. I completely trust her and pretty much let her do whatever she wants, and you know what? It always turns out just right! Cut and color! I wish I could trust everyone in my life that much. Jody rocks and so does the new salon. Spruce is a convenient hip and cool salon in Redwood City with plenty of nearby parking. The salon has a minimalistic and clean lines look which keeps the space looking and feeling very open and airy. I was very happy to learn that Jody from Rouge had moved just down the street. Jody listens to her clients wishes while also adding a little flare. She knows my style and cut and I rarely ever have to give her any direction. "Just do your thing", I say. As far as her technique is concerned, I think she's beyond awesome and really has a talent for making one's natural look come through in the best way possible. Keri Olsen colored my hair and it is exactly what I wanted! Im very picky about my hair but Keri is amazing! I asked for a natural look and she delivered! She understood I wanted to stay blonde but look natural at the same time. She is one of the best colorist I've been to! I highly recommend seeing Keri Olsen at Spruce! I love Spruce! I just had my hair done by Keri and she did an AMAZING job! I went in with hair down to the middle of my back and dyed brown. She asked what I wanted and I told her. "I want to cut it off! No longer than shoulder length and I want to try and lighten my hair." She wasted no time and started playing with my hair and figuring out the shape we would be going for. The whole appointment she was super attentive and making sure to explain each step of the process. My hair came out with beautiful soft layers and a full blonde highlight that looks natural. She's meticulous when portioning out the hair for the highlights. They don't even look like highlights just sun kissed hair!! I've never been so happy with a haircut. I have to write a review about Jody, because she is amazing! I searched long and hard for a new stylist when I moved to the peninsula. I had been getting my hair cut by the same woman for years and am extremely picky and have the kind of hair that is not too versatile to say the least. Anyway, I finally tried out Jody after reading the reviews here, and she was everything I hoped for. She listens carefully, gives great advice, remembers exactly what she did before, and gets it just right every single time. She's easy to talk to and gives some of the best head massages while shampooing you. Can't recommend her enough! Also, the location of Spruce Salon is perfect. Wow! Just left one of the best haircuts I've EVER had! Sonia is amazing! I have very stubborn, curly hair that many people have had trouble cutting and styling properly, but for Sonia it was no problem! She spent a good amount of time talking with me about what it is that I like, how I prefer to style my hair, trying to understand perfectly what it is I wanted. From what I'm looking at in the mirror now, she understood perfectly!! The whole salon is friendly, VERY CLEAN, and really well put together. I hate when I go into a salon and feel rushed or look around and there's bottles of crap everywhere. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the sleek, modern design of the space.
