This was the worst haircut I have ever gotten. Jimmy does not know how to do a taper fade. He was incredibly sloppy and rushing the entire time. Also - he butchers my beard when I asked for a beard trim and for it to be lined up. I also have cut marks on my neck from his razor. Daniel, Steve, and Gabriel had amazing reviews so I'll try my best to not just yearbook sign. Largish spot with a number of skilled Barbers / Barberess and estheticians. Buzz cuts, scissor cuts, fades, shampoos, straight razor shaves, brow waxes, nose waxes, beard trims, coloring, and various clothing / hair care products are available. Most prices are set but depending on who you see their prices could be a hair above or below the shop standard pricing. You can book your appointment online too to get an estimate on prices between stylists and see the calendar for available appointments and times. I've never done a walk in but the system seems fairly flawless. Some reviews mentioned lengthy waits but as they say, "the wait is worth it." Now I don't know who "they" are. But generally they are correct. Everyone that works here really takes their time so I'd rather wait a few minutes and have a nice haircut and / or shave rather than get an unfinished rush job. Usually I get a clipper cut but a few times I've tossed in a straight razor shave and most recently those two and a brow wax. Fancy! Baby on the way so I don't wanna look like a scruffy Dad to be. Appointment wise I've only ever seen Rosa, Jasmyn, and Brittany but would return to all of them. Conversation if you want otherwise they just get to work and leave you looking so fresh and so clean. I had a haircut for 12:45pm. When I got there early the barber I had booked with was gossiping in the back. At 12:48 I went to the front desk and told them I had an appointment that was supposed to start. He guy said "we have you for 1pm" and he said it with a little attitude. I said sorry I have 12:45. Been going here for five years, and I've always had the best experience when I go into Spruce. They've kept my hair looking good, and all the stylists always do an excellent job at getting my desired style right or suggesting new things I can try. Specifically, Pham has taken care of me for years and he's been the best barber I've had. But when he's not available, everyone else has been lovely as well. Sometimes there can be a little wait that goes over your appointment time, but I usually don't mind because I know they are putting care into their clients and I know they'll do the same for me. read more

one star doesn't even cut it, i'm not sure what barber i had but i couldn't be more unhappy with him i clearly asked for a low taper and because he clearly has a higher understanding of what i said he gives me a high top fade that's not even well done. it felt rushed and careless and was even painful because of how hard he was pressing the clippers into my head. luckily its beanie season but i will never return to this god awful place. read more

my nephew recently came here to get a simple haircut, nothing crazy just about an inch off all around. the barber who cut my nephews hair seemed to understand what he wanted ( he's 9 ) and then cut down to skin and faded the cut in. i understand that this is a common and popular haircut however my nephew is very particular about his hair and knew excactly what he wanted. along with this the barber also cut the rest of his hair much shorter than requested. to me personally this isn't a big deal as hair grows back however my nephew cried the whole way home and that's not fun for anyone. read more

Cool environment but the guy ( Doug) who cut my hair was out of touch and not skilled enough. He didn't know what a burst fade was and doesn't know how to fade. You can literally see a line where the size of my hair divides. Not to mention the line up was aweful and embarrassing. Definitely wouldn't recommend you can get a better cut at great clips or super cuts. read more

Great overall place. Incredibly friendly staff, clean and hip little spot. I've been going here for a little over a year, but probably won't be returning. The haircuts are always very sharp looking, 5 star, every time! But nobody there can do a nice beard trim. I went through two hair stylists, which both did a FANTASTIC job at haircuts and beard trims. However, over the course of the year, both were fired, one of which was a manager. Their current "best" beard trimmer and hair blender, has trimmed my beard a handful of times, two of those times my beard came out messed up. I take a lot of pride in my beard, and I think a place like this should have a beard expert trimmer, especially if you're going to pay a premium to get it cut. read more

Not bad, but certainly not great. I had high expectations after checking this place out online, but left a little disappointed. I only got a haircut so I can't speak to the shop, but it felt like substance was definitely sacrificed for style. The interactions with the staff were pleasant enough but seemed a little rushed and disingenuous. They were also making jokes about customers who weren't there, which rubbed me the wrong way. If you're looking for a quick cut, the hair stylists are more than capable of giving you a good one. The person who has cut my hair for the last ten years moved out of state a few weeks ago and I was looking for a new place to patronize. I like to support local businesses and Spruce had good recommendations. I made an appointment on a Sunday for a haircut the following Monday. I got a confirmation for my appointment and was glad to find a place that could get me in before Thanksgiving. The day before my appointment I received an automated confirmation I was good to go at 3pm. The day of my appointment at about 1:45 I got a new "confirmation" for 2:45 pm. I called and said I couldn't make it at 2:45 and would like to keep my original time of 3pm. The person who I spoke with said "that won't work that will back you up into the next appointment". I said I didn't understand my appointment had always been for 3 and I hadn't changed it. She told me "the system sometimes does that". Does what? Arbitrarily reassign appointments? I told her that her answer didn't make any sense but she wouldn't offer any further explanation. She offered to get me in earlier than 2:45 -- which obviously wouldn't work -- or reschedule altogether. I told her that if I can't rely on Spruce keeping their commitments I would just find another place to patronize. She seemed very unconcerned that I was taking my business elsewhere. I took time to write an e-mail to Spruce management explaining the situation -- thought they might want to know if A) their reservation system was just reassigning appointments at whim, B) their staff was bumping people because they had a better offer or something better to do or C) that they had lost my business. I never received a reply. Maybe being a very hip and cool shop, Spruce doesn't need to care about what people think or if non-regulars don't get the service they deserved but I won't be patronizing them again either for a haircut or Christmas and birthday shopping which I've done in the past. read more

I wanted to love this place but after a going here for a few years, and a bit longer than I should have (because it was convenient), Spruce has proven itself to be solidly average. They fancy themselves as barbers so you face away from the mirror to engage in the social atmosphere of the shop. Well, I never found any of the stylists or staff to be very conversant or particularly engaging about anything substantive, such as local issues. All the staff were friendly but I always felt like I was watching them and their pals talk about their post-fraternal social lives, lest they be more engaged with their phone screens. And while I was faced away from the mirror on my last two cuts I couldn't see that the "taper" I requested had become a "fade". I probably used 5 or 6 different stylists and I was never met with anything more than indifference and none of them gave me a better than average haircut. It's fairly inexpensive but I feel like Floyd's could deliver the same quality. As for the clothier and fashion "style" consulting side of the business, I always thought that was kind of laughable. Of all the times I went there, none of the staff or stylists projected any sort of notable or unique style. I think they could probably help a nerdy or geeky millennial guy blend in by looking lazy and self-obsessed, but as for a genuine attempt at showing some style sense for a broad spectrum of men - it just doesn't exist. I'm of the opinion that if you want to sell suits in a suit store then you should probably be wearing a suit. All in all, I think the shop started with a cool idea and fresh concept that never matured into a reliable and quality establishment. They have their niche, I think they serve the crowd looking for a fade and a good beard trim fairly well... of which I needed neither. read more

I'm in love! It's cute, it's hip, it's filled with an incredibly friendly staff who are as fun to chat with during a cut as they are good at their job. It doesn't really matter what kind of cut you're looking for, you'll be able to get it here, and it will look great. They've got a smattering of hip clothes, if you're skinny and in the market for some new threads, with some fun accessories to boot. But at the end of the day it's hard to beat a place where people know your name and hand you a beer when you walk in the door. It's my absolute go-to for my mop-top manscaping. Visit Spruce! After trying four other shops on Tennyson over the past year and a half, I've definitely found a home here. Nothing against those other shops, as there are some great people working at many, and I respect all of the owners, but in the end it's about the haircut, and Diana (among others, I'm sure) knows her craft. I don't have the easiest do, with competing cow licks and extra thick (half) Asian hair. But she does a fabulous job, and really talks through what she thinks would work best with those complications. Great atmosphere, not at all aggressively hipster, just welcoming. They also have a barbershop concierge, of sorts, who just keeps things running smoothly. Wish nothing but the best for this place!
