So many young people, junior golfers with their parents, couples, seniors and even super seniors. This course has close to 400 members and stays booked all the time. Even so the Super and the crew do a fantastic job of keeping this course in top shape. The greens are exceptional, running fast and true they are always a challenge. This week I experienced a first. I was standing on the hill beside the fairway bunker on the right about 140 yards out. On the green, I saw what I thought was a head cover. My approach shot landed right beside it and all of a sudden it starts moving. That's no headcover and as I got closer, I realized it was a massive Snapping Turtle. It's been weeks since a rain and in a drought this guy somehow got off his path and was looking for some water. From my pic you can see Eric, the Ranger with a sand rake trying to get him into the near by creek. We don't get Gators in the upland but we sure get some big Snappers!

The greens are normally well kept but slow compared to others in the area. Hole 2 is one of my favorite in the area because of the risk/reward and how the water on the right and large tree on the left force you to make a great drive. Hole 12 is my least favorite in all of Charlotte for its lack of a decent landing area anywhere on the hole. Unfortunately, the cart GPS system seriously takes away from the experience. The GPS system is overly restrictive and frustrating. The carts often stop abruptly and force you to reverse to blaring beeping, even in spots that aren't near greens or any sensitive areas. Many holes run side by side, and you should be able to access your ball quickly, but the GPS won't let you. It slows down play considerably. I understand protecting the course is important, but the way this system is set up just doesn't make sense. It creates longer rounds and leaves players annoyed. I've experienced this on multiple visits this year, and I've heard the same feedback from others.

Most importantly, the food was just OK. Sure, it filled my stomach, but didn't taste fresh, not far from tasting like it was microwaved. I also had to wait a while to be seated and find someone that even worked there, which surprised me because I practically had the restaurant to myself (also surprising to me on a Sunday but I guess golfers get out in the morning and don't stick around for dinner). Not that this is a big deal at all, but I also didn't need to be dressed up as it seemed more like a pub restaurant inside rather than a grand country club feel. The waitress was kind and talkative, so no issues there, but overall I wouldn't need to try it out again for food. I can't speak for the golfing aspect.

Additionally, the placement of hole 3's tee box was incredibly confusing AND dangerous. Hole 3's tee box is in the direct line of those teeing off hole 9. As for the putting greens, oh my goodness, they were horrific. They were covered with so many golf ball-sized green broccoli head growths.. so my putts bounced and zigzagged. It was really annoying. Oh, and the hole cups were giant. In other words, you can't practice anything: no speed, distance, or control. You won't be leaving a better golfer at all. It's extra sad because this establishment has so much potential. Actually, I don't know. There's A LOT that needs fixing. :(

The layout is designed to accentuate the picturesque lakefront setting. This was one of the first Davis Love III designed courses in the Charlotte area. The tree lined fairways, the terrain, and water make for a challenging game. There is only a small area at the beginning where you are looking at houses- the rest is natural. I can't think of anything bad to say about this place.

I'm thinking just after open, I'll breeze in and out. Not so fast, the place was already getting busy. When I parked I saw some high-end sports cars parked right in front, all backed in so the trunks were easy access to the sidewalk and just steps from the front door. That was the clue there were some experienced golfers on-site and there were. Several young men, it looked like a league and they had already ordered their cold beverages and were swinging away and getting festive. When it's December, cold and rainy, this is the place for the golfer who just has to get out and swing. I quickly got my gift card and boom I was out the door. If the group ahead of you doesn't enter their score, the game stalls unless someone from the next group inputs it or a staff member comes over. We had to figure that out on our own. On my previous visits the staff explained how the scoring worked, but that didn't happen this time. Three groups ahead of mine didn't know how to enter their scores or forgot, so they just stopped playing. I also think the reservations could be spaced out better. Groups ended up stacked on top of each other waiting for the same hole. Thankfully, everyone was still pleasant about it. I'd definitely go back, but I hope they make a few operational improvements.

The course is immaculate, and I can't wait to see it in full color this spring. I've already attended several club events, all of which have been a lot of fun. Mike Zhiss has been fantastic in answering membership questions, and I've had three lessons so far with Jim Lusk, the Head Professional, with plans to continue working with him weekly for the foreseeable future. What a great facility for practicing all aspects of your golf game!…read more They have a covered & heated driving range area where you hit off mats. They also have an outside driving range where you hit off natural grass. Both are lighted as they stay open until 9pm There is also a dedicated chipping area. There is a dedicated putting area which is really exceptional. It's set up like a 18 hole putting green similar to a putt putt course. There is not a single flat area on the putting course, it's all swales and ridges so you will really be challenged. In addition they have two golf simulators you can rent by the half hour or hour. You can register for free membership to get your bucket of balls at a discount of $1.00. Interestingly most all the balls are Titlest range balls which is a plus. Inside there is an attendant who will rent the balls, There are 3 different size buckets, small, medium and large. The small gets you about 70 balls and runs $10.75 They sell used and new clubs and golf bags. You can buy individuals clubs or a full set. They also sell golf apparel including shoes. You can get cold sodas and bottled water as well. This is a first class facility part of the First Tee Organization of Greater Charlotte. You'll find that on certain days/hours there will be a lot of youngsters practicing so you can ask the attendant about the best times to visit.
