The (Springfield Butcher) does not disappoint. EVERYTHING, they have in the store is Top Shelf. They also have some prepared foods that are to die for. The Quiche is the Best, I have ever had. The Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie are also Both Top Shelf. Besides having Excellent Meats and Seafood, the Staff are (ALL) 100% Professional and are very willing and energetic about helping you find what you need or want. Just had the rudest greeting ever at this shop. There were customers inside and a man at the front door was holding it closed. Instead of doing the most practical, professional thing, which would be to greet the customer and say "Hi! I'm so sorry we have to close and it's been a madhouse today. Please come back soon" the man - clearly an employee at least, judging by the jaunty butcher's cap- shook the closed sign in our faces and pointed to the clock. What a jerk. We missed closing only by 2 minutes. It's not like we were an hour late and demanding to come in. It would have been our first visit, and I had hoped to become a regular customer since this is the closest butcher shop to my home. Based on this poor approach to customer service neither myself or my friend will ever be back. That's two households that they lost due to laziness and a terrible attitude. I am so disappointed. I used my Groupon today. Service was fast and good. Very courteous. However, the lady before me had a lousy experience. She too had a Groupon. She went over the $26 amount and intended to use either a debit or credit card to pay, but was told that she would have to spend $15 more to be able to use the card as the store has a minimum purchase requirement. The gentleman who waited on me stated he would've covered the lady's small overage amount, as he did for me, but the clerk waiting on the customer made her so upset she stormed out and made no purchase. The fact of the matter is that it is violation of the merchant's contract with Master Card to require a minimum charge for a Master Card and more than a $10 minimum charge a Visa credit card and no minimum charge can be mandated for a Visa debit card. I understand that accepting credit cards is expensive for businesses, but we all have to play by the rules or else only accept cash. read more

I used a groupon for my first visit here, and it was quite a deal...I paid $15 for $20 worth of steak. I got 2 large ribeye steaks, which were some of the best I've had in a very long time. I had forgotten how much difference it makes when you get meat from a butcher than than a chain store like walmart or giant. Lesson learned today: If you have to pay in cash, and they don't give you a receipt, be wary. Because I came in on the last day of a Groupon stint, it was pretty busy. But that gave me time to figure out what I wanted, within the parameters of my budget (a $30 Groupon and up to $10). Now, I'm not great at math, but I'm pretty sure I can handle simple addition, and the numbers just don't add up. (But please correct me if I'm wrong, because I really don't want to be right about this.) 2.04 lbs of Chicken Cordon Bleu at 7.99/lb = $16.30 (Thank you for the sticker to confirm, Springfield Butcher.) 1.05 lbs of Country Bacon at 7.99/lb = $8.31 (Thank you for the sticker to confirm, Springfield Butcher.) .98 lbs of Dijon Chicken at 3.99/lb = $3.91 (Unfortunately, Springfield Butcher decided not to put a sticker on this purchase, and instead decided to ring up my order without weighing it in front of me, like he did the rest. How did I find out? I weighed the package on my food scale at home. Why didn't I say something at the time? I (perhaps naively) thought that perhaps he did weigh it when he was ringing up the order.) So, according to Springfield Butcher, $16.30 + $8.31 + $3.91 + tax = 35.25. What's that you say? $6.73 for tax? That's 23.6%! (I don't know about you, but that seems like an awfully high amount for tax.) And I didn't even get a receipt. (I know, I know. I should have asked for a receipt. Hindsight is 20/20.) So do you want to know why I think that I was charged about $5 more than the value of the meat I purchased (considering a reasonable tax rate)? Because Mr. Guy in a Union Street Public House shirt decided that he deserved a tip for putting up with all of the demanding Groupon people. Now, I know it's only $5, but it's the principle of it. I've been in a lot of service positions, with a lot of chances to scam people, and I didn't. Not that my patronage--or lack thereof--will affect this establishment, but I can at least hope that this can prevent someone else from getting scammed in the future. Happy butchering! read more

The beef and sausage here are delicious and fresh , but imo it is a little pricey for me. I would only come here because of Groupon or some kind of 50% off deals. Even though I do like the beef here, I would only come here if some sort of discount or something like 50% off groupon. Also it's near my house but a bit inconvenience because I have to hop on 95 and usually horrible traffic the time I can go. 4 out of 5 times I received great service with someone there who have knowledge on the meats. OK...read a bunch of the reviews below, and I agree w/ some. Yes the place can get crowded, especially if you go on the last day of a Groupon rush. Yes, it will be a while before this crew wins any congeniality awards. And yes, food handling practices are somewhat stuck in the 1950's. But let's face it, we don't go there for a friendly chat w/ the counter people. My advice, bring your Groupons, understand the rules (especially if you bring more than one at a time). Try to go a few days before the end of the Groupon timeline, and if possible go on a weekday afternoon...you'll be practically be the only one there. As for food handling, heck, unless you're getting grub for tartar, you'll be cooking the germs dead anyway. The selection could be better. The sausages are among the better items, the stuffed pork chops, not so much. Rib eye & T-bone are also good. The crab cakes (add some seasoning) are also good. I only really visit this shopping area when I have to go to the vet that is 3 doors down. So while my cat hates it, I enjoy the trips because I get to stop by the butcher! It's a perfect man place to go on the weekends because you can buy lots and lots of meat, and oh by the way, if you need some football merchandise you can randomly purchase that as well. Obviously lots of different meats so I won't go into detail other than to say it looks and tastes fresh, they have game meats which vary time to time, and a small selection of seafood; Chilean Sea Bass, Tuna, and a few other options were to be had last time I was there. It doesn't seem like the seafood offerings get much traffic so the Sea Bass was starting to get a little dry and discolored. I picked up a crab-cake and cooked that baby up and it was dee-lish, though not a runaway steal at $7.99 per. Grab a couple of their housemade sausages too! read more

I came in on a weekday afternoon. It was dead. Not gonna lie, it did not look very clean, but the display cases were. I guess that's alright in my book. There were a pair of clerks who knew how to make me feel at ease. They were knowledgeable. I picked up some steaks and bacon and went home. I was only there once, so I don't know if this gets busy or not, but only one other person was there while I was. Both the steaks and bacon were good. I'm tempted to come back. The quality and selections of meat are excellent, and Mike, the owner/butcher is always willing to give friendly advise on preparation and appropriateness of cuts of meat. FINALLY! a place to get Prime dry aged steaks. The Porterhouse I got was RIDICULOUS!!! So good cooked under the broiler with a little Alderwood smoked Sea Salt on top. My first visit was from a Groupon tip now I'm hooked. Crab cakes were great too. Goodbye Wegmans, HELLOOOOOOOO SB! Love this place! Have all different types of cuts of beef, chicken, pork, fresh sausage, and even really good crab cakes too. I go with their coupons and without coupons. Meats are always fresh and superb. I like the "pre-made" entrees too (chicken cordon blue/etc.). It is worth finding this place as it is tucked into the Springfield shopping center but a gem of a butcher. Worth the 15 min drive on the beltway to get to this butcher as all other butchers in Fairfax area are overpriced and suck compared to Springfield Butcher! read more

I love Springfield Butcher they have the most amazing cuts of meats and seafood too. Definitely fresher/better quality than any grocery store. You'll find pretty much any type/cut of meat and the staff is friendly. They'll even suggest how to cook something if you aren't sure, just ask. They also have pre-marinated meats that are great for quick no fuss meals. Also they have THE best crab cakes ever! It's jumbo lump crabmeat with just the right amount of seasoning and whatever else they put in it and all you do it just pan sear both sides and they are unbelievably delicious. Just don't burn them. They'll tell you the proper way to cook them. But I've had crab cakes a many restaurants and even tried making them at home and nothing can ever compare to the crab cakes at Springfield Butcher. I purchased the $13 for $26 worth of food Groupon/Living Social deal (can't remember which one) for this place based on the recommendation of my coworker who had bought a similar deal and raved about the meat she had purchased from there. I went in with the intention of purchasing just the bacon wrapped scallops as a thank you to my husband for being a great guy, and ended up walking out of there $87 lighter with the following additional items: - a pound and a half of grass fed ground beef ($5.99/lb - great price!) - buffalo strip steaks ($17.99/lb; got two which were a pound each it turned out) - a roaster chicken ($2.49/lb) - bone in chicken thighs ($1.99/lb, also a good price on par with the grocery store) - a boneless pork roast which was on special for $5.99/lb - 6 large scallops wrapped in bacon - 1 lb of applewood smoked bacon ($7.99/lb) - 2 teriyaki venison sticks that were consumed prior to making it back to the car I am attempting to eat healthier and more organically; I am trying to avoid purchasing meat at the grocery stores and instead purchasing it at farmers markets or the Amish market. This place has similar quality food but is more convenient to me, and the prices are reasonable. I would like to refute the claims from the gentlemen that because he had a groupon he was charged regular price instead of the special price and who also received poor service. I didn't encounter that problem at all; in fact, the person who helped me was more than helpful, explaining to me the difference in the cuts of pork that I could get for a dish I was making in my crock pot and he recommended the pork roast on special instead of the more expensive meat I could get. When he rang me up, he asked me if I had a second coupon and I told him no so he informed me that if I liked them enough and purchased again in the future, I could use two for orders of $100+. I will definitely keep that in mind since they do have packages of different kinds meats so that you can get a variety to fill the freezer. It would also be nice to have for the holidays if you want a special cut of meat (say prime rib). Lastly, I brought my own freezer bag in and he saw me preparing to put the food I purchased in it so he asked me to hand it to him and said he'd fill it for me. I thought that was nice. So, based on my experience and how they were more than patient with my questions about things in their case, I give them 5 stars. On Saturday, June 25th 2011 I went to Springfield Butcher to redeem Groupons I had previously purchased. In my party were myself and my mother, planning on making two separate transactions with two separate Groupons. I had given one Groupon to my mother as a gift, and although both Groupons had my name on it, I knew that it wouldn't matter because as your policy states, "Don't worry if your name is on the Groupon you are gifting - as long as the number hasn't been used yet your friend won't have a problem using it." As soon as we walked into the store, you could sense there was a negative attitude toward Groupon users. A big easel sign stood by the front window stating something to the effect, "We want to thank the MAJORITY of our customers for respecting the terms of the Groupon." (The word "Majority" was indeed highlighted and bolded). This is not the first time there has been a negative reference to Groupon users in the store either. We took a number and when it was my turn, I informed the man behind the counter that I would be making a purchase and when I was done my mother would be making a purchase as well. We only took one number instead of two, so the same person would ultimately end up helping us both. I want to reinforce that these were TWO SEPARATE TRANSACTIONS, and I indicated as so when I placed my order. When I was done with my order and getting ready to pay, the man behind the counter asked me if my name was on both Groupons. I told him it was and he told me I could not use the second one in my mother's transaction because the same name was on both and it was against the rules. Knowing very well what the "rules" are for this particular merchant, I explained that I understood that I could not use more than one Groupon in a transaction unless the order was more than $100, but that this did not apply here as it was two separate transactions. He proceeded to get rude with me and tell me "This is not up for discussion. If you actually read what it is says on the sheet you will see that you can't use it." Well, I did read what it says and nowhere does it state that it is not transferable, or that you cannot have the same name on more than one Groupon for separate transactions. I tried to explain once again that what he was saying was incorrect and that it did not apply in this situation - that he was mistaken about the name being on both Groupons, etc. but he would not have it. He went on being rude and said, "If you and your husband went out would you expect to be able to use his ID to get in somewhere or to get a drink?" I'm sorry - what does that have to do with anything??? During this entire altercation, the owner - Mike Preast - just stayed silent slicing his meat while making eye contact with me. He did not say a word, nor did he stop the altercation and apologize for his employee's rudeness towards a customer. I will never set foot in that store again, and I sincerely hope that Groupon will find that they do not need to associate themselves with merchants who do not adhere to Groupon's terms and even go so far as to send out emails such as the one I have attached where they take on the persona that we owe them something. The owners (and their employees) obviously have little to no respect for their customers who they feel "take advantage of the system" and are obviously not "regular high-paying customers". The whole purpose of Groupon is to bring new customers in who might not normally frequent a merchant. I used to promote Springfield Butcher to my friends and people I came across as a very involved member of both my community and as board member of the PTA for my son's school. I can promise you this will not happen again. In fact, I will not hesitate to give my honest opinion of this merchant when asked for it. read more

I read some of the reviews saying that the staff is not friendly or that you do not get a smile from anyone behind the counter. I completely disagree. Every time I have gone in, the service has been excellent and they accommodate my requests for specialty cuts, etc. very happily. I think the selection is good and fresh and much better than what you get in the grocery store. We got THE BEST filet minion here. I am not a steak person , but this was the most tender, flavorful steak I've ever had, seriously. I grilled them at home on a George Foreman, seasoned with just S&P, and it tasted better than any bite of my husband's steaks-- and he's ordered filets at Ruth's Chris and Narcoossee's. But they got nothing on this one steak that is still blowin' my mind two days later. We're going back for the bangers (OMG they have bangers!!!) and the meatballs for what I hope will be the bomb meatball sub. Very cool place. read more

I am a huge fan of the Springfield Butcher even before they started issuing Groupons. I have a list of "regulars" (lamb burgers, center cut pork chops) that I always buy for easy weeknight dinners.
