This was due to him not being able to locate the cause of pain, as he claimed he had filled all cavities and that it can take up to "two weeks for the nerves to not be sensitive" post-filling. Eventually, he said I might need a root canal. Well, after wasting an incredible amount of time and gas I ended up finding another dentist. They located the hole in my filling and filled it, as well as the other cavities. They told me that was the source of pain and that I definitely didn't need a root canal. I don't have the issue anymore, it was fixed in one visit with another dentist. I was also told I had periodontitis and would require deep cleanings every 3 months. This was also false, as confirmed by other dentists I saw shortly after. My teeth are actually in great shape. When I called them to get my records, they tried to tell me they couldn't "release" them to me. I ended up getting them anyway. Horrible team and staff. They're CON ARTISTS.

This morning a filling came out, so it seemed like a good time to see a dentist. I had an appointment with Harriman Family Dental, Harriman, NY, near where I live this morning. The office staff is great, and the dental hygienist was excellent; very thorough and professional. I was seen briefly by Dr. Rachel Wheaton, one of the dentists on staff. Dr. Wheaton recommended 4 new crowns, which surprised me since I had just been examined by my old dentist 6 months ago. One of the crowns recommended would address the hole in my tooth from the filling that came out this morning. There was no offer of a shorter term, less expensive solution for the problem that brought me to the Harriman Dental office; only a $1657 crown. I indicated that I couldn't do new crowns right now and left for home. I later called to speak with Dr. Wheaton, but she was at lunch. I asked for her to return my call. Later I received a call from the receptionist who said Dr. Wheaton asked me to return to the office for a "consultation" and did not want to do a "consultation" over the telephone. I asked the receptionist to confirm that the doctor was unwilling to do a repair on the tooth, and her reply through the receptionist was that I needed a crown, a repair would not be permanent, and she would not do a restoration. So I am left with a hole in my tooth and a sharp edge until I can afford a crown; and I am less than pleased that Dr. Wheaton would not call me to answer my question. Allan E. Harriman, NY

You have to be some sort of masochist to speak…read moreglowingly about this profession -- especially if your issues involve surgery, implant dentistry, root canals, teeth extractions and the like. Everyone's a coward about something -- and in my case -- it's dentists. But then there's Dr. Galina Zhukova -- principal at Paramus Dental. Formerly a Soviet era gynecologist in her native Russia -- now an oral surgeon and Professor of dentistry at NYU -- she has the gentlest hands in the business. Makes sense. :) Over the past couple of years Dr. Z has remade my mouth and smile -- with gentle persuasion -- and has cured me of my ddsophobia (mostly). Her practice is state of the art as are her skills. She also oozes urbanity and sophistication -- which is a real plus for an inveterate blowhard like me. I need to practice my listening skills generally -- not much choice in "the chair" really -- and Dr. Z makes it easy because she is interesting, well traveled and informative. A pleasant reprieve from the drone of the drill. Hard to get a quick appointment -- they go fast -- but oh so worth it. I found pricing to be fair for the market -- priceless really if your teeth need a rescue like mine did. Now I can more fully enjoy the textural pleasures of eating out and then yelping about it. Seemingly they have a certain clientele they wish to work with. One was due to "high bp" on a bp machine that wasn't fitting, my husband is very muscular and the cuff wasn't fitting properly (went immediatly to the doctor to confirm and no problem) we called to explain and they want a full cardiologist work up , for a filling. One was due to addressing dental anxiety in chair and the dentist simply wasn't able to understand that and canceled the appointment while I was in the chair with zero explaination except he had "a bad feeling." When we asked for the money back for the initial visit that didn't have services rendered (they charge before appointment) they didn't credit it. When we went to the second appointment and asked again for the credit (substantial amount of money) suddenly the tone shifted and he was very rude. We lost 2 work days because this guy thinks because he has weighted blankets he's an "anxiety professional". Horrible bedside manner when it actually matters. Does anyone have a dentist that ACTUALLY understands anxiety.

Dr. John as a person is caring and honest, he listens and treats people like they are his extended family. Dr. John as a dentist is skilled, careful, and has a very light touch to ensure that any work he performs is solid yet painless for the patient. I had to see him last week and he remembered off the top of his head which exact tooth had given me pain 11 years ago. The office is run extremely well, the new space is futuristic, but the wait time is nearly non-existent so it's not like I've spent much time in the waiting room. The hygienists are also great. Nicole has been our hygienist for most of the time we have been going to Allendale Dental. She is kind, attentive, friendly, and most importantly I often forget that I'm at the dentist's office whenever I have a cleaning with Nicole. And just like Dr. John, she actually cares; a real rarity in today's world. I'm thankful for Dr. John's expertise and his close attention over the years. I later learned the visit was used to take X-rays and periodontal measurements that were not clearly explained or consented to at the time. I was then presented with a $2,600+ treatment estimate, closely aligned with the remaining balance on my dental insurance. I left the office with no clear explanation, no diagnosis I could understand, and no clarity on what treatment was supposedly required or why. This experience felt misleading and non-transparent, and I was uncomfortable with how services were presented and billed. I have since filed formal complaints with my insurance provider and the appropriate state consumer authorities. At no point during my visit was I told that no cleaning would be performed, nor was I informed that the appointment would be used to build a case for additional treatment. I was not given a clear explanation, diagnosis, or tooth-by-tooth breakdown, either verbally or in writing, before billing occurred. I strongly recommend that new patients ask detailed questions, request explanations in writing, and verify consent before any procedures.

I would not come back here again…read more My kid had an endodontic surgery and silver crown on one of child molar about 6 months ago with the pediatric dentist. The other day, a huge inflammation was seen right below the silver crown. Noticing something was wrong, we visited another pediatric dentist. The new dentist took the x-ray and recommended that we take the tooth out because the silver crown was not sitting properly and likely had cavities inside. One the surgery was done, we noticed that the spacing between the crown and the teeth was so large that the food would get stuck, unable to be brushed, and leaving room for new cavities, not to mention that the old endodontic surgery was done improperly and developed further cavities (leading to inflammation). My kid is only 5 years old and was supposed to use the tooth for another 3-4 years before the adult tooth would come out. According to the new pediatric dentist we visited, it's likely that the old dentist didn't grind away the molar enough to put smaller crown to save time, but rather used bigger silver crown to save 10-15 minutes! Come dental dentists are always running against time and will never treat patients right. They look at patients as nothing but money. No doctor ethics. I hope other parents would not have to go through what we went through.
