Told me he would cut my hair a certain length and then go shorter if I desired. Never asked again and just kept going until it was only a half inch long. The guy spends more time talking than listening to what the customer wants. The shop could use a good cleaning as well. Hair clippings all over the floor. read more

I keep checking back on the reviews to see if they are getting any better (or getting another barber). I'd really like to patronize Spring Valley Barber Shop as I living walking distance in Spring Valley. Once Captain Nemo passed, the shop was vacant for quite a while and the it reopened as SVBS. I tried to use SVBS for 2 years, but finally couldn't put up with the incessant jabber of Eric the barber. Set aside the hygiene or should I say lack of, and the minimalist furnishing from the 1950's, he is a good barber. But he never stopping pontificating and claimed to be an expert on every subject on the planet. To the point he'd stop cutting your hair and stare you in the face rambling on for 3-4 minutes jabbering before resuming your haircut; this would happen 3-4 times during your haircut. If he'd just shut up and cut your hair, you'd be in and out in 1/2 the time and your ears wouldn't be ringing for the next hour. He's had a couple of other barbers in their along the way, but none ever stay, not sure if it's the lack of business or Eric's arrogant "know it all attitude". He's favorite thing is to ask someone a question hoping they don't know the answer so he can try to prove how smart he is,or thinks he is. And if they do have the correct answer, he still press on telling them his answer is better than theirs. On my last visit, I sat waiting for my turn and the way he humiliated the poor guy who's hair he was cutting, ensured it was my last visit. It's exhausting! read more

I was notified recently that my regular barber is pulling up stakes and leaving Houston. Luckily, I had heard a lot of good talk about Eric and Spring Valley Barbershop recently and scheduled an appointment to check him out. The barbershop is a no frills straight to the point kind of shop. This is not part of that recent trend of new build barbershops that looks like old timey days but covered in a gloss and polish. This is just an old authentic barbershop. There's a long worn wooden church pew to sit on and wait your turn plus a fridge full of cold beer (and soda/water). Eric, the owner, is a talkative friendly guy. If you're not entertained by what's on the tv, Eric will more than likely have you roped into a conversation to pass the time. I had scheduled my cut with Eric and he knew exactly how I liked my hair as well as how I preferred my beard shape after just a couple questions. He made quick work of the haircut and trim and I was probably out and happy within 30 minutes. If you're not caught up in the Tune-Up, Board Room, etc. speakeasy barbershop fad and are looking for a talented barber you'll come back to regularly, Eric and staff have you covered. read more

I was seen quickly enough and all the barbers were friendly-but that is to be expected. The place was horribly dirty and in very poor condition. The very basic things like picking up the accumulation of hair on the floor and keeping countertops and other surfaces clean were non-existent. The guy with the beard (I'm assuming the owner) looked like Willie Robinson and talked incessantly. Couldn't get a word in edgewise. After my cut, the barber used a $2.00 whisk broom to slash off the excess hair on my neck. (then he picked off the excess whisk broom particles) Seriously, what happened to the nice soft brushes barbers always use-too expensive, I guess. Then had the gaul to charge me $30.00. 30 bucks!!! My first Yelp review. I typically move on from trivial things quickly, and just use the site for recommendations. I went to Spring Valley last week, lived with the haircut for a few days, and slept on my experience and decided to share - here's the deal. I'm not going to get into the cleanliness of the shop, the pricing, booking experience, etc. - largely b/c those were all various degrees of "fine." The issue here is Eric. Seems like a fun guy & if you sat next to him at a dinner party - you wouldn't lack for conversation. However, he doesn't spend enough of his energy & attention on what actually matters - your haircut. He's pinball-ing from anecdote to anecdote so frantically, seemingly ducking in & out of the service being provided, he forgets to do the basics: ask you what type of haircut you'd like, check in to see if you're happy with the length, etc. I'm sure he'd argue that he can hold court while giving a great cut - and clearly others would agree. That said, I'll be moving on to a barber who is more interested in understanding & delivering on the haircut I'd like, not whether I was impressed, or amused, by his musings. read more

Great place to get a perfect cut and shave! A traditional barbershop with traditional ambience right down to the barber pole in front of the shop. Eric is a very detail oriented barber who takes his trade seriously when you are sitting in his chair. Additinally, he is able to maintain a conversation with his clients and not lapse on the task at hand. I always feel ten times better after a beard trim and close shave which happens to be my favorite part of the visit. This is a no non-sense barber shop with Eric and Jesse. This place is relaxed and a great place to "chew the fat". It is obvious that these guys know what they are doing. First time in, I walk in and Jesse cuts my hair to my satisfaction. Perfect.They also have an "old-timey" barber pole in the front window. It gives the place some atmosphere.
