Hands down this is the facility I would put my family member in. Each and every employee knows the residents by name and always puts the residents first. The administration supports the staff and will even pitch in with resident care when needed. I highly recommend the Ashford for your family needs. Come on down! Our door is always open. You will see and feel the difference.

Like most families navigating dementia, our top priority was stability and the best care possible. We made it very clear during the admission process that he often urinates on the floor. According to our research, this is a common reality in dementia care. We asked directly what circumstances could lead to discharge, and we understood that aggression would be the primary concern. Our dad has never shown aggression toward staff or residents and is, in our experience, well-liked by those who interact with him. During his stay, he was involved in two separate incidents where another resident struck him. Even in those situations, he did not respond with aggression. Despite this, within a short period of time, we were given a 30-day discharge notice related to the same behaviors we disclosed upfront and believed would be manageable. We also have serious concerns about the level of care and safety during his stay. Our dad experienced two falls requiring ER visits and facial stitches--despite no prior history of falls before admission. The most serious incident, as it was described to us, occurred after he wet the bed overnight. We were told he was assisted into the bathroom and left unattended while staff retrieved supplies, and was later found on the shower floor, bloody with significant injuries requiring emergency medical care. Based on what we were told, leaving a cognitively impaired resident unattended in that setting raises significant safety concerns. We attempted to work collaboratively with administration to address his incontinence, only to be told that this behavior had only been seen once or twice in the past six years, which was surprising to us given our understanding of dementia-related symptoms. To have a facility accept a resident with full knowledge of their needs, indicate those needs could be managed, and then later discharge him for those same issues was deeply disappointing. The impact is not just logistical--it is personal. Uprooting someone with dementia can lead to confusion, regression, and emotional distress that is difficult to reverse. Families depend on honesty, experience, and consistency when placing a loved one in memory care. That was not our experience.

For months my siblings and I tried to broach the topic of qualifying my mother for hospice care as she is in the early stages of heart failure. With each conversation Rebecca became increasingly hostile to the idea of hospice support. Eventually we decided to have my mother evaluated for hospice qualification by a third party. My mother qualified for and was enrolled in hospice care. Rebecca took it upon herself to have our mother disqualified!!! She reported the assessing nurse for inappropriate behavior which was an absolute lie, the assessing nurse was completely professional. It was Rebecca who was unprofessional; she had a literal tantrum when we brought in an outside agency for evaluation. Afterwards some of the nurses at Heritage Garden joined Rebecca in this hostility. They literally turn their backs on my sister when she tries to discuss my mother's care. They'd say things like, "you didn't ask our permission" before you had her evaluated. We don't need their permission. Somehow, Rebecca convinced the hospice agency to withdraw their service which absolutely jeopardizes my mother's care. I regret ever placing my mother's care in the hands of Rebecca Vom Dorp and Heritage Gardens and you should run the other direction if you are considering placing your loved one in her care. RUN AWAY! My mother is now safely at a better facility and we are so grateful to be free of the need to interact with Rebecca.

The meals are tasty and perfectly suited to our mother's needs. This is the 4th location mom has been in and we are most grateful to have found the care to be even more than we imagined possible, especially considering that our mother is blind! If you're looking for the Best in Care, ANYWHERE, make sure you visit Rebecca and Ted at Heritage. Merrie.
