Just to start it is a very sweet country Café, and it is impeccably clean. The servers are all very sweet and the food is cooked very quickly, but don't let that fool you it is exactly everything you've always wanted! The French toast is just as good as mine. The pancakes are great. All of the food is wonderful, but I especially love the breakfast. They cook their scrapple perfectly. Their bacon is always crispy if you want it. The eggs are perfect. Everything is very fresh. Perfect for any type of gathering or breakfast in your pajamas. Lol. The Reuben sandwich is great! I've never had an item I disliked from there it's one of my favorite places to take my mom or just me and the hubby! They have specials on the board every day and their prices are great and the Services is even better. Allan the chef is hilarious and great at his job. A fine place for a casual meal. We ordered two sandwiches and a grilled chicken wrap which all came with Utz chips and finely chopped cole slaw. The grilled chicken was flavorful and juicy. Bacon was thick cut and smokey. Local ripe tomatoes added just the right notes of acidity. All followed up with a giant slice of chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. Back in 1978 I left Pennsylvania behind to pursue my dreams. In the ensuing 40 years, although I have never returned to Pennsylvania to live I have made the trip many times for visits. When I do, I typically pass by this small Cafe. And for 40 years I've been telling myself I should stop in but the time was never right. Today my bride and I decided to have breakfast on the way back home and we finally paid this place a visit. It's a shame that I waited so long! The small Cafe is mostly a hangout for locals, the kind of place where the customers greet the waitress by name and vice versa. The interior is small but comfortable, featuring about 6 booths and four or five four top dining tables. We were greeted as we stepped in the door and told that we could sit wherever we liked. Three or four tables were occupied by obvious locals engaged in post breakfast conversation. The noise gave the restaurant a pleasant hum but was not annoying. The waitress quickly took our drink orders and brought me a cup of extremely good coffee. There were several daily specials posted on a blackboard as well as an extensive menu. Being a Pennsylvania native I was hoping for some good scrapple, but alas the brand served here is Rapa which we do not enjoy. So I decided to pass and went instead for the eggs with Spam. I don't often eat spam but every once in awhile I feel a need for it. The chef here at the country Cafe knows how to make breakfast. The Sunny side up eggs and spam were cooked to perfection and the home fries very good. My wife opted for the French toast which she enjoyed thoroughly. Prices were reasonable and the restaurant is very clean to include the restrooms. Of note, they can't add tips on to the credit card payments so you might want to bring some cash. read more

Being stuck in the car with hubby in excess of 6 hours driving home from Southern Virginia is not a fun experience. But being stuck in the car, hangry (hungry + angry) is even worse. We were desperate for food. The first place I found via Yelp was closed (even though Yelp said they were open, grrrrrr...) so hubby surprised me by pulling up to this place. He grew up in this area and had been here before. I was skeptical....and hungry. For four days we were in rural Virginia struggling with lackluster food choices. This place seemed like it would be like all the sub-par places we ate at in Virginia. Thankfully I was wrong and pleasantly surprised. First off it's clean, more than one would expect for this location and establishment. The decor was dated but not overly so. Some attempt was made to dress it up and it did have more of a cozy, homey vibe than a dive. The menu was basic but acceptable. I was ready to start chewing on my arm at this point so anything edible was going to suffice. Hubby and I both choose burgers for the simple fact that they came with fries and cole slaw. Everything else fries were an upcharge. Not only were our burgers delicious (and cooked perfectly to order!) but they added grilled onions at no additional cost. The fries were handcut, a tad on the greasy side, but well above average. The cole slaw was served in a tiny cup and not bad for store bought. While hubby added some toppings I asked for some without and both orders came out correct with our modifications. They also had a few hand dipped Hershey's ice cream selections and a designated outdoor ice cream window. The cakes on the counter looked good and they had a few pudding and pie choices as well. Our server was warm and friendly and our orders came up quickly. Since the place was small noise carried, including the lady at the table beside us who talked off the ear of her dining partner about insurance. And the baby that fussed and cried off and on throughout our meal. We could hear every conversation and I'm sure they could hear ours as well. The bathrooms are right off the dining room and very tiny. Sound would carry there too so don't do a number two! It was a very good meal, one I'd return for next time we're down that way. read more

Get the heck out of Baltimore once in a while, hons! We've been coming here for 20+ years whenever we want to get out of the city and are headed on a road trip up Route 1. The menu has stayed basically the same and the quality of good old plain American fare hasn't changed a bit. The staff are always sweet and attentive and have great teamwork as they move around the seating areas taking orders and re-filling beverages. It's definitely a local hangout and favorite with the oldsters. Hey, I just turned 52..guess I fit that bill! Their Maryland crab and beef vegetable soups are fantastic. Today I had the ham and bacon club on rye, and she had the grilled ham and cheese sandwich on rye. Both came out very promptly and perfect. The ham was very thinly sliced and tomatoes and bread fresh. She got the beef vegetable soup and the whole bill came to about 20 bux not including the tip. The actual oak tree for which the cafe was named may have died many years ago, but their dedication to well prepared, good, plain American food served up by warm, pleasant staff lives on. read more

This restaurant/diner is a little bit of heaven out in the middle of nowhere near the Conowingo dam in rising Sun, Maryland. Nothing presumptuous (except maybe the awards on the wall from the local newspaper.) Basic comfort Food: excellent homemade vegetable beef soup, your basic fish sandwich, with the best fries and coleslaw we've had in a while. I can't understand why people hate on the Spready Oak. Folks, this is just a little diner in the middle of nowhere. If you're a food snob, go to Center City Philly, the Main Line, or Baltimore, find a five-star establishment there, and get your eat on. My hubby and I occasionally make the hour-and-a-half drive to the SO when we have a day off and want the experience of eating in a diner in a rural area. This place is so quaint and cute, plus it's a nice departure from the hustle and bustle of Delco. They played the local country-music radio station on the PA, and my fellow diners looked as if they had stepped out of an episode of Green Acres. Our waitress was very sweet, gave good service, and had a charming, almost Southern accent. Typical diner food was served (instant mashed potatoes with canned brown gravy, for example), and we were okay with it. The bread pudding was yummy and homemade! We will come back! read more

Delicious homemade meals!! We had a hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. It was real sliced turkey breast...so delicious. We also had a BLT with fries. The fries were homemade. The turkey club was very good, too. Our 10 year-old loved the chicken quesadillas. They were filled with chicken and cheese. We ordered mozzarella sticks. They were presented with meat sauce. Oh my was it good! Nice touch! The staff was friendly and on top of their game. The meals were wonderful, the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant is a small country delight. Down home country restaurant. What you see is what you get! Convenience attracted us here as we were traveling Route 1 on a multi-hour trip. I used to go to the Spready Oak at least once a month when we first moved to Cecil Co. but it's been at least a year since I've last been and it was just as I remember... The same booths and tables and crowds of people with nice staff and good coffee.. Nice... Until...the food showed up. I got my old standby the Hungry Lady. In the past it lived up to it's name because you could only finish it if you'd been starving, it was so filling. But this time the bacon was burnt to a crisp and 2 pieces of the French toast was the butt end of the loaf and was like chewing on cold foam. So now I guess the Hungry Lady means you will still be hungry afterwards. After years of consistency and enjoyable meals, I'm disappointed in my experience. I may go back again if I'm in the area and retry the buckwheat pancakes, another favorite. But I won't be in a hurry. read more

We have been here twice and it's just awful. The first time I ordered the chipped beef gravy and my boyfriend ordered the sausage gravy. They were both so bland we used almost an entire shaker of salt and pepper. We got a side of sausage which was disgusting. It shouldn't have even been called sausage. It was more like a lightly seasoned hamburger. The second time I went I took our three year old. He loved the Mickey Mouse shaped pancake. I ordered a cheese and mushroom omelette with hashbrowns. The mushrooms were definitely canned and the cheese tasted like Kraft singles (I guess I should have asked for a different cheese when I ordered) I despise Kraft singles. The hashbrowns had no seasoning whatsoever. Again I had to load on the salt and pepper. They were also cold in the middle, obviously frozen. It was a crappy experience. I am dismayed and surprised by some of these unworthy reviews about a favorite local haunt, Spready Oak. We've been going there maybe 4-5 times a year since 2005. It is one of those local, fairly non-descript eateries that dot any part of America. We've often taken houseguests (we're about 20 minutes away, in Harford County). The service has always been friendly; depending on how busy the place is, there is more or less chatter with the waitresses---understood, and appreciated when it's us waiting for the order. The visitors (and us!) are always...enthralled...by the portion sizes. "Biscuits and Gravy" comes in like a small battleship, and enough to feed half it's crew. "Country Ham" as ordered by German visitors staying with us, had their mouths hanging just as much as the cut of meat was left hanging over the edges of the plate. The pancakes (we love the buckwheat) are all-American. Go ahead and get the fruit. Omelets: Mushroom and cheese, with a side of corned beef hash---you cannot go wrong; yes, the hash browns might be a bit crisp on one or two edges, so be thoughtful where you put the ketchup! The burgers are all-American (order it exactly the way you want and that's how you'll get it---so be careful!). Sandwiches...like your Mom makes. I like this place. My parents goes there a lot, and want to take me along some times. I love how the waitress treats them with kindness as if they were her grandparents. I like the food and that its clean. The prices are not bad on most things. Never left there hungry and we get dessert to go. If you want a big and fancy place I would tell you to go else where.
