BRUNCH REVIEW Atmosphere: Retro/cozy diner with posters of old movies and comics from the world wars posted around the whole restaurant. Bar seats, tables, outdoor seating available. Accommodates for kids with coloring books, books to read, kids foods. Bangkok benny's (4/5) Sriracha, peanut butter sauce, and hollandaise? It was very tasty. It was just a tad heavy on the peanut butter but I would reorder. The hollandaise was well done and my eggs were medium as requested. Overall, loved the vietnamese take on a benny. Pulled pork poutine (5/5) My only complaint is that there wasnt more of it. It was so tasty and the gravy wasnt overly salted. Lots of pulled pork in there. Drip coffee (3/5) Free with check-in. Average. Could be hotter. Not much body or depth. Very average coffee. Vanilla Latte (3/5) Again, very average. I'm guessing the espresso wasnt pulled by an industrial machine as it fell flat. Vanilla was very artificial. Drinkable but would not reorder. Service: We came here during a busy Christmas week but all the staff were still friendly and seemed to enjoy being there. I loved the vibe. Food came in a reasonable amount of time (prob 20 mins). I love the sense of humor in this place. At the bottom of the drinks menu it said that drinking may not improve your life. There was a sign by the entrance stating "kids not being looked after will be given a shot of espresso and a puppy". This breakfast place looks like your typical greasy spoon diner stop on the outside, but it is a bit more unique than that. Spoons is located in a Super 8 Motel right off the 1 up in northern downtown Victoria. Since the place is attached to a motel, there is more than likely to be always be enough parking. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch up to 4 in the afternoon every day. They have a pretty good sized menu with a lot of unique things on their menu, such as a bowl of candy for your side at breakfast; They have griddle options but are kept at the back of the menu under "sweets". The place didn't seem to have too much business when I visited the place in the morning. You'd expect this place to be a bit busier since it's connected to the motel. There was only one woman up front both doing register and service. She took our orders and was really talkative. The only thing that kind of stood out to me was their refusal to do any type of substitutions to their menu. What it says on their menu is what you get, if you want something different, it's going to cost you. Fair enough I guess. I ordered the so called Breakfast Bake (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/spoons-diner-victoria?select=QmB-2FFbb7QX48pNJlmuVQ). The menu refers to it as a sort of breakfast lasagna dish that's layered. It's basically eggs, cheese, sour cream, salsa, beans and chipotle sauce layered together between tortilla shells. Unfortunately for me, this bake wasn't really good in the slightest. The big bad had way too much sour cream in it, its literally all I could taste. After attempting to remove a bit of the sour cream, what was left was unseasoned dull tasting beans and a bit of eggs. The whole plate kind of came out luke warm, which wasn't really good either, I don't know if they made this on the spot or simply warmed it up. For my side I got grilled tomatoes, which actually tasted pretty decent. My friend had ordered an omelet and they said it was basically okay, nothing to really write home about. The pancakes were really thin, not fluffy, and had a weird spongy texture to them. I didn't like them at all, wish they only gave me one. This diner has some fun named unique dishes to its menu, but the food quality wasn't really there for me. Most breakfast plates are going to run you about $12-15 per person and they're pretty decent portion sizes. The coffee here wasn't too bad, it was brewed fresh when I had arrived and was decent stuff. The service kind of lacked as well, the food took an awful long time to come out, especially for a restaurant that had only about 2 or 3 tables going at the same time. Spoons Diner seems to have lots of potential here and maybe I just came here on a bad day for them. My friend didn't seem to think their food was too bad and my food wasn't exactly disgusting by any means. I'd place this diner in the mediocre category, it's not a bad place but not exactly the best Victoria is gonna offer you. read more

Today was my first foray to Spoons, and I will come back. It isn't perfect, but it's good. Great: -the staff. all super friendly, full of smiles and eye contact and attention. the line was giant today, but a woman kept coming out, taking names, updating us on status and letting us know we hadn't been forgotten. -the decor. diner chic, pulp on the walls, chalkboards, chrome and vinyl and formica. comfortable and cool. -the variety: giant menu. something for everyone. Good: -The price. It wasn't cheap, but it was definitely reasonable, and offered a couple of bare basics (eggs, meat, toast) for $6.00ish, which was great - Victoria and its happy acceptance at paying $15+ for breakfast is not always ideal. -The coffee. Solid. Ehhh, Needs Work: -the portions are all over the place, and some of them (Centennial Square Hash) are just insane. That is too much food to give a person. Slightly cheaper and much smaller would be less wasteful (and grotesque). -I say this about every breakfast place, but healthwise, it would be great if a healthy sub for hashbrown potatoes (fruit or side salad) didn't cost a bunch extra. We're usually here every Saturday morning (come before 10 am if you want to avoid the line). The food is great and the portions are huge (we usually split something). But what brings us back again and again is the friendly service. Everyone here is in a good mood and emanates positive energy, which is a terrific way to start your day. If this review was strictly about the quantity of food served up then Spoons would rate a 11. The 3 meals that were served at my table would have fed 6 people comfortably. With a shared history with Floyd's, Spoons is reminiscent of Floyd's via its decor and general attitude. If you like Floyd's, you'll like Spoons. The difference is that the servings are even bigger and the room is a little nicer. This is a great place to work off a hangover. Otherwise, it's the same type of place - comfortable food and chairs. I have eaten here four times in the last month and found the food quality to be really inconsistent. The only thing I can count on is that I will be lucky to get my coffee cup refilled so that I can have more than 1.25 cups before I finish my meal. Spoons has a warm and community feel on days such as Saturday when the place is packed; it has more a small town diner feel when it's more empty. You won't be disappointed with the atmosphere. it's also a short distance to downtown Victoria. The servers are fantastic, they personalize the experience and spend ample time with customers regardless of how busy they are. This place "gets" customer service. Food Wow. Wow. Wow. The value for money here is fantastic, mostly all-day breakfast and hamburger/sandwiches with a key difference. The menu is mostly unique to Spoons, but order anything -- not only will it be delish, it will come in ample belt-bursting portions. We were wondering how this place turns a profit! Found this place randomly searching nearby late breakfast locations and was very impressed. There was a lineup when we got there, and a lineup when we left and good reason for it. Outside of the fact that my Eggs Benedict was just great, everything I watched come out of the kitchen looked simply delicious. I will certainly need to return and although I will have trouble deciding what to eat next visit, the milkshake will be a must after seeing them land on so many tables with smiling faces :) Very "hip" decor and great friendly service enabled a great dining experience all around. read more

Spoon's Diner started out as another Floyd's but has since evolved to find its own standing. We had not been there in over a year and when we did, we found the same charming atmosphere but, even better, a spectacular menu. They have branched out on their breakfast fare, and while some have stuck close to the Floyd's model (the Prusca vs the Mahoney), they are moving in different directions and catering to more specific tastes. I had the CBR Hash (which is nice they have expanded their hashes from one to 7) and it was perfect. There was a great potato to other ingredients ratio and it was prepared excellently. Ordered the "Gotta be Different" hash and received a portion large enough to feed a tiny country!! The multi-grain toast was delicious, it was buttered up and I topped it off with their peanut butter & strawberry jam, and OMG to-die for!! Ended up eating 1.5 pieces of toast with my PB&J and just a bit of my hash before I was stuffed and ready to pack my meal to go! The hash was scrambled with Frank's Red Hot Sauce which REALLY kicked the flavour up a notch - absolutely loved it! I also ordered a coffee which was nicely brewed! Only downside is this is not a guilt-free brunch place! Spoons is more of a greasy, hang-over food type place. Saw lots of customers in full PJ get-ups here lol!
