In 2009 I developed frozen shoulder in my left shoulder. The capable staff at Spooner cured me. So, in 2025 when my right shoulder froze, I immediately returned to Spooner. This place is hit or miss but mostly miss. They don't seem very advanced for physical therapy or helping with pain. I almost feel like they Google exercises and don't care if they help with your pain or not. You'll often get passed off to a less experienced person at some point who will run you through the exercises while they clean equipment or chat up other people. The worst was having someone massage near my neck and face and their hands had a horrible smell to them, like they didn't bother to wash them between clients. Never going back. read more

Just wanted to commend my PT, Derreck Caldez, at Spooner's location in Ahwatukee. Derreck has been working on alleviating my lower back and right leg pain, developed partly from age (I'm 74) and partly from lack of activity. Over the last few months I had concern about a planned 10 day trip to Israel in late June, early July and my my ability to physically handle all of the necessary walking for sightseeing without pain and discomfort. Derreck, both a consummate professional and an extremely pleasant person to deal with worked intensively on strengthening my core in preparation for the trip. I give him an A+ for what he accomplished. My trip was extremely enjoyable. I had absolutely no lower back or leg pain and was able to keep up with the other 9 people on the trip, all being at least 20 years younger than me and with 3 teenagers as part of the group. My step count averaged about 11,000 steps a day with one day being well over 15,000 (a far cry greater than the usual 5,000 steps a day that I strive for at home and complete about 5 days a week), all with no pain. Sure I was tired and my calves ached at times from all the walking, but without any pain in my lower back or right leg that was totally tolerable. Derreck is an extremely knowledgeable PT who is well trained in what he does and I will be forever grateful to him for making the physical aspects of my trip to Israel so pleasant. I also want to give a shoutout to Armin, his technician at Spooner who helped to implement many of the exercises Derreck prescribed during my sessions at Spooner. They are a great team and an asset to the entire organization. read more

The therapists are friendly enough, but this practice seems to be more about the numbers and revenue than patient care. And like many of the other reviewers commented, the inflated payments seem a common theme. It's disappointing that I have to bring in an explanation of benefits to not pay 4x what my insurance says is my responsibility- seems odd that there is such a discrepancy. With so many PT options available in the valley, you can likely find a better one, where the entire staffed is focused on your return to health. read more

Spooner Physical Therapy - Front desk area. - Physical Therapy Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

On 3/16/20 I had total knee replacement surgery. My surgeon recommended that I begin outpatient physical therapy as soon as possible after my discharge from the hospital. He referred me to Spooner Physical Therapy. I was evaluated by Cassie Olson, PT on 3/19/20. She was very thorough and professional. I met with her again on 3/20/20 to begin my postop exercises. Since she was going out of town I was assigned to Aaron Kranz, PT for the following week. He stated that I was progressing well during my visits on 3/23 and 3/25. On postop day 11, March 27th, I was thrilled to be able to walk into the facility completely unassisted. After being evaluated by Aaron I was escorted by a student intern, to begin exercises on a recumbent bike. She helped me onto the bike and after a few initial pumps on the pedals she noticed that it looked "too easy" for me. I agreed, and at which point she reached down to adjust a lever stating, "I'm not really sure how to move this seat". I was quickly catapulted forward, resulting into my knee bending into a severe angle. I screamed out in pain and tears. She asked me if I was ok (I wasn't) but I did my best to get off the bike and continue through the remaining minutes of scheduled exercises, no matter how much it hurt (which it did). I was in agonizing pain as I met my husband in the waiting area. As soon as I got home, I elevated, iced, and took pain meds for my excruciating knee pain. Since I didn't see Aaron before I left the facility I decided to call him to tell him how upset I was in being allowed to have a student intern work with me when she was untrained in the use of the equipment, and that I wasn't under his care 100% of the time. I also informed Aaron that I called my surgeon who encouraged me to rest through the weekend and if not any better to go to his office on Tuesday for an x-ray. Aaron's reply was that "this is one of those things... about being on those bikes, it can be an adjustment to be too far or too close". He never offered a reason for not supervising the intern, and basically suggested that these things happen. Which I find unacceptable. I received a few emails from Aaron basically checking in to see why I cancelled my appointments as well as saying that "being on those bikes it can be an adjustment to be too far or too close and have too feel it out or somethings they move forward too fast." (On 3/31) x-rays performed at doctor's office showed that the knee replacement device was intact, but that I suffered from severe soft tissue injury and swelling as a result of the 3/27 incident. He was upset & strongly encouraged me not to return to the Spooner PT. I called the Spooner facility as soon as I got home to let them know I'd be cancelling my upcoming scheduled appointments with them. The front desk staff inquired as to why I'd be cancelling, and I told them it was because of the incident that occurred the previous week. They transferred my call to Anthony Celio, Clinical Director. I provided him with the details of the incident & he told me he had heard a different story - that I took it upon myself to operate the equipment, sending myself forward and that since I was able to perform the remaining exercises it was assumed that I was "fine". Anthony said that he'd pass my name and contact information along to the corporate owner, Michelle Babcock, and to expect a call from her. I've never received a call from her, nor what I'd consider a genuine apology from Aaron. I'm grateful not to have serious damage to my bones as a result of being unsupervised by the PT and instead by an untrained student intern. Despite the pain and swelling, I began working very hard at Foothills Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy on April 1st. I'm trying to regain my strength and ability to walk normally again. My health insurance only covers a specific number of visits to the PT. I suffered a two-week setback from this unfortunate incident. However, because I was covered by my insurance company for these PT visits at Spooner, the total number of approved visits will be shortened and I will have to pay out-of-pocket to in order to make up for the two weeks that were initially covered at Spooner PT. As a corporation, the lack of care by Spooner employees, both at the time of the incident and in a demonstration of a lack of follow up, speaks volumes of the type of personnel working at this facility. (With exception of Cassie Olson, who was extremely professional and caring. She called me several weeks after the incident to see how I was feeling). I'd like to warn patients to take precautions regarding going to this facility, if seeking rehab from a major surgery. I certainly would not recommend this service. Afterall, I was supposed to be helped, not hurt there. read more

I just finished a two month course of treatment at Spooner Physical Therapy for pelvic floor disorder. Although there is no guarantee that I won't have pain flare-ups in the future, working with the therapists has certainly provided me with the tools to permanently address and mostly control the issue. The therapists were pleasant and professional, carefully taking me through the exercises and modifying them as needed based upon the idiosyncrasies of my body, so it would be correct, in my opinion, to say that treatment is personalized - not just "do this and that for a given condition." In fact, I was and am so pleased with the treatment I received at Spooner that, now that I am on the verge of PT for a newly torn meniscus, I will definitely go directly to Spooner and will not consider any other offices or entities that would also be able to provide the physical therapy I will need. Update: Yesterday I went for what was my first - and last - session for my torn meniscus. Admittedly, I am very lucky, and it appears that my meniscus had started healing on its own. However, several hours after the first p.t. exercises designed to improve strength in the muscles adjoining the area (so as to protect the meniscus,) I was experiencing pain severe enough at the meniscus tear site to need to take OTC painkillers, which hadn't been necessary for me to do in several weeks, and I still have mild pain today. Although the physical therapist explained the POSSIBLE mechanics of the pain, I think that it would have been more helpful to have been told BEFORE the fact something to the effect of, "Despite your not feeling any pain right now, it's possible you will ..." for whatever reasons would be applicable. And, although the p.t. cannot see inside my body, the pain I got later in my meniscus and my quadriceps was addressed along the lines of perhaps the physical therapy exercises I'd done being a bit too much. Well, perhaps it would have been better to start with something less (or the LEAST) strenuous and gradually increase the resistance - especially when dealing with a tear, HOWEVER small - rather than making an assumption about ability based upon testing, the MRI results and my impressions of the pain, when tested by the p.t. This was an error in judgment that I am unwilling to risk have happen again. I was extraordinarily lucky in both the location and the size of the tear, and I can't risk someone, however well intentioned, playing an educated guessing game as to whether something will or will not exacerbate the issue. (I must add that the p.t. felt that I would need very few sessions based upon the testing done and my responses to the assessment questions, and the p.t. did think that the exercises I normally did prior to the injury could be resumed at a level I was comfortable doing. I mention the foregoing because I had gone for physical therapy for two main reasons: to make certain I didn't injure/re-injure myself when I resumed exercising, and to build up muscle, which my regular exercise would accomplish.) To FINALLY sum up this latter experience, I would recommend that if one starts physical therapy, it would be beneficial to ask what negatives or downsides can one expect after the session. That would prepare one if something seems to go terribly wrong - although it might not be the case that anything ever goes wrong. Asking what could go wrong could save one a scare. I know that if I need physical therapy again, it'll definitely be something I ask in advance of doing any physical therapy! Have revised my stars from five to four based upon the second experience. read more

Beware of hidden charges. When I am quoted a cost for physical therapy after an initial assessment, I expect that quote to mean something. Otherwise, why quote me at all? Went to appointments for months paying what was quoted by Spooner each and every visit. Imagine my shock months after the fact to be billed just over 1/3 additional for each and every appointment, totaling up to hundreds of dollars in unanticipated charges. This is mind boggling. The staff quoted a cost based upon running my insurance, and never once said there was anything additional, or that the initial quote was incorrect. Not just incorrect, but severely low. Based upon the invoice I was sent, it appears Spooner was aware at a minimum by the second week of treatment that their estimate was far too low. Why would Spooner not communicate this to me at the time? These charges were apparently accruing on my account from week 2 going forward, yet no one said a word or ever told me any additional costs were compounding every visit. They looked on the computer, and continued telling me I only owed the original quote each visit I was there. The medical field is one of the few industries where you can get quoted one rate, never consulted in advance that you could or will owe SIGNIFICANTLY more, and well afterwards receive more charges. Had I known they misquoted me I would have absolutely handled my treatment differently, working more within my very limited family budget. Spooner seems to have been deceptive from my point of view by failing to communicate an accurate amount to me as their patient. I feel as though the quote was low-balled to get me in the door signing up for therapy, very much a bait and switch. I've since contacted other therapists in the area and was informed they maintain contact with the patient should the initial estimate not be an accurate reflection of the total fees. That's what I would expect. It's not just good business, it's ethical business. The unfortunate part is the physical therapy itself was good. The staff is pleasant. But their billing practice is a game changer. Very poorly done, Spooner. read more

Terrible, I went to Spooner because of balance and had several falls. Well I took a bad fall which ended up on the floor in pain. They lifted me into the chair not lower me. Received this message from Tracy weeks later. They do not care. Hello Robin, I have been informed that you no longer wish to continue with your physical therapy care here in Ahwatukee. I am saddened to hear you report a fall under my care. Although, I was not physically present next to you at the time your knee buckled, you were being observed. The staff I worked were great, the main problem I had was with the cost, I guess there used to very rich people, because the price they quoted me was very high, then when I said to cancel my appointments that dropped it down to what it should have been all along. I took my daughter to Spooner under the recommendation of the sports doctor, the therapist stated he was confident he could get her back up and going in about 4-6 weeks, however after 8 weeks she was only 70% healed consequently I took her to a surgeon and he said that we were completely wasting our time and money, the best solution for her was inactivity. In addition they billed us for visits that never happened. I would tread lightly with this place. read more

This place charges a lot of money for physical therapy. I went in for my hand therapy 2 times a week. They do good job I went in there for 4 weeks didn't get any bill. So I asked front desk they said the insurance is still processing and the billing department is slow. So I was waiting for my bill after 8 weeks the bill came it was $700 something. I talked to front desk lady said if I know this place charges a lot of money I would stop the therapy long time ago. But because I didn't get any bill from you guys that is why my bill is so high. She said if I want to talk to manager he can lower my bill. I said I would come back and talk to him. After I got bill sent to my house I went in to the office I talk to front desk lady I asked to see manager because maybe he/she probably can lower my bill the same front desk lady said " I didn't recall" what the hell. Needless to say I have to pay almost $300 for 1 hour hand therapy. They charge more than my hand doctor in Scottsdale charged me. read more

I wrote a review in January about my therapy on my right broken arm and right broken hip, due to a trip in September 2012. My hip was pinned, they (therapy) worked it hard, but the bone did not heal. So in March a hip replacement was done. Due to all the therapy before the replacement I was able to come back pretty quickly from the hip surgery. My arm continued to receive therapy, I did quite a number on it. Here is the amazing part. New hip, right? But after 6-7 weeks my KNEE was keeping me up all night, crying. Went to the Dr and was ready for a pain specialist. I told PT Matt Shuey (he's amazing in my book), about my knee. It had been a while since I shed tears during therapy, but that day......OUCH! He worked on my leg, put suction cup on it (double ouch)! BUT it only hurts while he works on me. I NEVER complain (may cry though). After that day, my knee did not keep up awake at night. I even cancelled my pain clinic appointment BECAUSE OF HIS SKILL. Matt Shuey has amazing knowledge and talent. I've been going there for months due to the severity of my injuries. I was fortunate enough to come and be treated by the best, from beginning to end! I can't say enough good about Matt, he's the therapist that has treated me. I'm sure they're all good, just as all there support staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I totally recommend Spooner Therapy at 40th St.! They are terrific! read more

I had surgery on my dominant hand that left a lot of pain and scar tissue. I have been receiving therapy on my hand for over 2 months now and my hand almost feels normal again. My left leg hamstrings were torn off. At only 11 weeks post-op, I'm still in a lot of pain. When you have a serious injury, the last thing you want is to have someone touching it. It has been a long time since I have needed physical therapy and went herr for my back issues probably almost 2 years now. But I wanted to make sure this place got the recognition it deserves. Tracy was so awesome and let me bring my daughter who was 4 at the time and was so patient and understanding with her. They gave me great tips, advice, and workouts to do at home so I didn't need physical therapy for very long and was better in no time. They gave me a plan to follow to get back to running which is one of my favorite workouts and I am so passionate about it. Front desk staff awesome! Sharniece my hand therapist amazing and her assistant Crystal just as wonderful. I was in a vehicle accident in Mexico caused some damage to 4 of my fingers on my right hand. I was told by my doctor that I may not get any movement back on my fingers. The entire injury was horrible but I was able to find my recovery process very satisfying. Therapy is not fun but Sharniece was excellent and I actually enjoyed all my visits. I went there 3x's a week for 5 months straight. I did everything Sharniece asked me to do. It took some time but I was able to get all my movement back on my right hand.
