This was our nice meal out in Aarhus. Mefisto is a seafood restaurant that's a bit on the "stuffy"…read moreside, but we still had a pleasant enough time despite completely overordering. We both started with their elderflower aperitif--a wonderful cocktail that was citrusy and not too floral. For dinner, we thought that we were ordering a Caesar salad as a starter to share, but it came out with the main courses, and it was huge and had chicken on it and tasted nothing like Caesar, so we are *finally* learning our lesson that the Danes are clueless when it comes to this particular cuisine. We throw our hands up! The pork schnitzel was very good, nice and crispy, and we enjoyed the peas on the side, but why was the horseradish like a tangle of shredded noodles on top? Confusing! The moules frites our daughter ordered was massive, so that ended up being a waste of money because only a third of them got eaten. The accompanying fries had a tangy seasoning on them that we all loved. One of us also got the stjerneskud, a kind of smørrebrød, because it had to be done once. Imagine a massive piece of bread covered in a bernaise kind of sauce and now it's topped with smoked salmon, a thousand tiny shrimp, a grilled AND steamed plaice (a kind of whitefish). The thing was insane, hence the aforementioned overordering. Service is nice enough. The bill was sky high, which is our main reservation about this place, but it's our own fault at the end of the day for letting our eyes be bigger than our stomachs. We wouldn't necessarily recommend Mefisto at the end of day because we didn't Capital L Love it, but you can certainly have a nice meal here. 3.5 stars rounding up.

The 3 course menu tasted delicious, and also offered an excellent value proposition :-) The ambiance was warm, quiet, and charming; the service was totally on-point while being completely helpful and friendly. Everyone we encountered spoke excellent English, and made us feel more like guests than customers. My only regret is that we visited here on the last night of our stay in Arhus - I look forward to returning next trip!

It's a fixed menu for each day, and you have to be there on time (6:30pm), when they welcome you with appetizer and aperitif (and a bread buffet). They serve you a 3-course dinner, and you get all the wine you want during the whole evening! When we went, there were 3 different kinds of white wine, and 3 different kinds of red wine as well. Of course, you get coffee and tea to go with the dessert. The evening ends at around 9.30pm. All this is 445 kr. per person! The food was fantastic, and we loved the location (by the harbor, a good view) as well. The building can be a bit difficult to find for the first time though, so allow enough time to get there. Since it's a fixed menu (and for the two times we were there, the main dish included meat), the place wouldn't be suitable for vegetarians, pescatorians, or any of those who have some kind of food allergy. But otherwise, the place can give you a really nice, relaxing evening. I love that I don't have to look at the menu or anything. You just need to get there (don't forget to make a reservation!), and once you're there, everything is taken care of. You can just concentrate on your company and good conversation, and you don't even have to worry about how much this is going to cost in the end, since it's all inclusive and clear.

There are a few of these in the states, but the non-stuffy atmosphere here was perfect. We also liked the self-service wine, bread, and oil. The 3 white and 3 red choices were each appropriate to the food but allowed some amount of personal preference - as well as accommodating different drinking paces. Also saves on service staffing needs I presume. We really love it!

I wish I'd asked the woman's name, because she was top notch. This was an unexpected delight that I'm glad to say I found on yelp (thanks, brothers and sisters). We were shocked this wasn't a Michelin star restaurant, because the quality would absolutely merit that. This is one of those restaurants that has fun with their food and presentations and make it such a memorable experience. I can absolutely say that if you are only having one dinner in Aarhus, you should make it here! Such a special experience. Grateful we ate here.

You must try the salmon which is smoked at the table (otherwise there is no smoking in the restaurant), but it's a great experience. Once it's smoked it will be arranged on top of a superb salad. I have been there so many times for both lunch and dinner I stopped counting - even foursquare gave up on me here. They do have a brunch in the weekend, but not very exiting. They do have the best take-out in the city.
