This was our nice meal out in Aarhus. Mefisto is a seafood restaurant that's a bit on the "stuffy" side, but we still had a pleasant enough time despite completely overordering.
We both started with their elderflower aperitif--a wonderful cocktail that was citrusy and not too floral. For dinner, we thought that we were ordering a Caesar salad as a starter to share, but it came out with the main courses, and it was huge and had chicken on it and tasted nothing like Caesar, so we are *finally* learning our lesson that the Danes are clueless when it comes to this particular cuisine. We throw our hands up!
The pork schnitzel was very good, nice and crispy, and we enjoyed the peas on the side, but why was the horseradish like a tangle of shredded noodles on top? Confusing! The moules frites our daughter ordered was massive, so that ended up being a waste of money because only a third of them got eaten. The accompanying fries had a tangy seasoning on them that we all loved. One of us also got the stjerneskud, a kind of smørrebrød, because it had to be done once. Imagine a massive piece of bread covered in a bernaise kind of sauce and now it's topped with smoked salmon, a thousand tiny shrimp, a grilled AND steamed plaice (a kind of whitefish). The thing was insane, hence the aforementioned overordering.
Service is nice enough. The bill was sky high, which is our main reservation about this place, but it's our own fault at the end of the day for letting our eyes be bigger than our stomachs. We wouldn't necessarily recommend Mefisto at the end of day because we didn't Capital L Love it, but you can certainly have a nice meal here. 3.5 stars rounding up. read more
